SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,622, dated November 8, 1904.

Be it known that I, LnoroLD H. VOGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, (Jamaica Plain,) in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Innersoles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the IQ art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in innersoles for boots and shoes, the object of my improved innersoles being to provide an arched portion at the inner side of the shank to support the arch of the foot to prevent the breaking down of the arch of the foot and render the boot or shoe comfortable to the wearer; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the inner side of an innersole embodying my improvements. Fig.

My improved innersole is provided at its shank with a laterally-inclined arch, thecrown or highest portion of the face of which rises toward the inner side of the shank to form a support for the arch of the foot. This support terminates short of the outer side of the 3 5 shank, so that said support or arched portion of the shank of the innersole is of less width than the shank, this being a conformation which adapts it to exactly fit the arch of the foot, to provide a support therefor, and pre-' Where the innersole is made of leather and as here shown, I provide an inset 10 in order to thicken the innersole at the arch or support thereof. This inset may be made of leather or other suitable material, conforms on its lower side to the required relatively flat shape of the innersole, and conforms on its upper side to the shape and lateral inclination of the arch or support. This inset terminates short of the outer side of the shank of the innersole. It is secured to the lower side of the innersole by any suitable means.
It will be understood that the innersole herein referred to is that kind of innersole which is permanently embodied in the structure of the boot or shoe and on which the boot or shoe is made.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An innersole having an inset on its under side, at its shank, the lower side of the inset being relatively flat and its upper side being laterally inclined, said inset extending from the inner side of the shank and terminating short of the outer side thereof, being thickest at the inner side of the shank and serving to form a laterally-inclined arch in the shank of my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
