I0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. LEDRU It. BENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabethville, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to miter boxes and more particularly to that class of miter boxes which includes swinging saw holders.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple article which may be folded into compact form to occupy a minimum of space within a tool chest or bag and which comprises means for correctly adjusting its alinelnent, simple and compact means for locking the swinging saw frame in any selected position, means for adjusting said saw frame for the admission of blades of varying thicknesses, and means for adjusting and locking said frame in a selected angular position for cutting angle miter-s or for folding my improved device preparatory to storing it away. 1
With these objects in view my invention consists in the following features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Fig. 4, is a longitudinal sectional through the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing more particularly the locking inc-ans shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view illustratingthe means for adjusting the holder for saws of different thicknesses, and, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of holder detached.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I provide a foundation board 1 provided with a strip 2 attached to its lower edge and at right angles thereto in order to squarely and firmly seat the board 1 on any suitable support, openings 3 in said board being provided through which screws or other fastening means may be driven into support. On the board 1, I arrange a metal base 4 pivot-ally connected thereto by a bolt 5 and provided with transverse openings 6 through which screws 7 project from said board 1. An adjusting screw 8 is mounted through a bracket 9 attached to the board 1 and is adapted to be screwed into the lug 10 attached to said base plate 4. Thus, said plate 4-may be adjusted to a correct alinement when it is necessary. Pivot-ally mounted on the bolt 5 above said base plate 4 is a swinging frame 11 having a rear flanged segment 12 form ed thereon and provided with a plurality of notches 1.3 in the flange thereof. A spring tongue 14 is attached at its rear end to the base plate 4 and works in guiding lugs 15 also attached to said base plate 1. The tongue 14 is adapted to project within any one of the notches 13 in the segment 12 to lock the frame 11 immovable.
Projecting through the board 1, through a transverse slot (not shown) in the base plate 4 and through the curved slot 16 in the frame 11 is a stud 17 having arranged thereon one end of the locking plate 18 connected at its other end about the bolt 5. Mounted on said stud above said plate 18 is a nut 19 provided with a handle 20 and a pair of cam shoulders 21 and 22, the cam 21., being the locking cam and the cam 22 the releasing cam. Above the nut 19 the stud 17 is further provided with a transverse opening through which projects one end of the rod 23 mounted at its other end on the bolt 5. Thus it will be seen by reference to Fig. 1. that when the nut 19 is turned in one direction the cam 22 engages beneath the end of the tongue 14 to lift the same free and allow the frame 11 to be swung around. Further it will be seen that on moving the nut 19 in the opposite direction the cam 21 will engage beneath the rod 23 and come quently said nut will bear downwardly upon the locking plate 18 to tightly lock the frame 11. By this means I am able to lock said frame 11 at any point, independent of the tongue 14 and the notches 1.3.
Integrally united to and extending vertically from the frame 11 at the sides thereof are the ears 24 in the extremities of which is pivotally mounted the saw frame arranged to swing with said frame and capable of angular movement with relation thereto by reason of its pivotal mounting. Said saw frame comprises spaced side members 25 united at their upper ends and providing between themselves transverse slots 26 through which a saw is to be reciprocated.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 7 I have shown a saw frame 27- constructed of bicycle or other light metal tubing slotted at 28 to correspond with the slots 26 of the form shown in Figs. 1 to 6. With either of these forms I may use blocks or shoes 29 to assist in correctly guiding the saw. At one side of the saw frame and mounted on and depending from the bolt 30, by which said frame is pivoted to the ears 24, is a locking plate 31, through the lower end of which is loosely mounted a locking screw 32 threaded through the ear 24. Thus when said screw is turned by means of a screw driver or a tool inserted through the open ing 33, the plate 31 will be drawn inward toward the car 24 thus locking the saw frame at any angle. Thus the saw frame may be moved to an angular position in order to cut an angle miter or it may be folded upon the board 1 preparatory to storing the same away in a chest or bag.
With reference to Fig. 6 I have shown an adjusting screw 34 threadedly engaging through one of the side members 25 of the saw frame and bearing against the other side member in order that when said screw is turned said side members will be forced apart to admit a saw blade of greater thickness within the slot 26. It will be seen that although I have shown the screw 34 applied to the form of saw frame shown in Figs. 1 to 6, it will operate as well and may be readily applied to the form of frame shown in Fig. '7.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim 1. In a miter box, the combination of an adjustably mounted base plate, a swinging frame mounted thereon and having a curved slot therein, a saw frame foldably mounted on said frame, an upstanding stud arranged through said slot, a cam nut rotatively mounted on said stud, and a vertically stationary element carried by said stud and arranged to receive said cam thereagainst to force said nut downward and lock said frame, substantially as described.
2. In a miter box, the combination of an a'djustably mounted base plate, a swinging frame mounted thereon having a curved slot therein and provided with a notched segment, a locking tongue adapted to engage within said notches to lock said frame, a saw frame foldably mounted on said frame, an upstanding stud arranged through said slot, a double cammed nut rotatively mounted on said stud, a vertically stationary element carried by said stud arranged to receive one of said cams thereagainst to force said nut downward and lock said frame, the other of said cams being arranged to move beneath said locking tongue to remove the same from said segment.
