RAIL-CHAIR.
Specieation of Letters Patent.
Patenteaoct. 15.12907.
Application ned January 19,1907. serial No. 353.164..
To all 'whom it mayl conca/m: s
Be it known that LJosnrn W Tnorrnn, a'citizen o the United States of America, residing at Dora, in the county oi Walker and `State oi Alabama, have invented' new and useiul Improvements in RaiLGhairs, of which the iollowingisa specification.
This inventtinrelates to rail chairs, and oneoi the principal objects ofthe seme is to provide eiic'ientand reliable means for joining the meeting ends of a pair of railway rails and to permit the same to expand and contract Without interfering With the efficiency oi the joint.
Another object is to provide means ior anchoring the rail chair to a tie extending across the rails at the joint.
Still another object o the invention is to provide yielding Washers for the bolts to permit a slight yielding action to the rail and chair.
These and other objects may be attained by means 1;1 i
the construction illustrated the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure lis a side elevation of :trail joint made in accordance With my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the llneV2-2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3; Fig. l.
Referring `to the drawing for a more particular description oi my invention, the numeral l designates one end oi a rail, and 2 is the end oi the other rail forming the joint, said rails being provided with bolt holes 3 in the viel) portions thereof7 said bolt holes being slightly larger than the diameter of the 4bolts to' lbe passedthrough the same. A. rail chair 4 surrounds the bese iange Oi the rail and is provided with' side anges 5 which take the place oi the ordinary tish plates. The
bolts 6 which pass through the openings 3 inthe web oi the rail, and through the flanges 5 of the rail chair-"are provided with yielding Washers 7 preferably oi' rubber disposedlintermediate metal 'washers 8, and a'nut 9 is fitted to the bolt 6, and said nut being-held in place by an` ordinary cotter pin 10 extending through the bolt.
Seated in the base portion oi the rail chair are a pair of bolts ll, the heads of said bolts being countersunk in the inner wall of the chair, and said bolts extending through a tie l2 and being fitted with nutslS and-provided With to the size ofthe bolt openings 3 and the arrangement bfl resilientwashers 7, there will be a slight yielding action to the joint which Will permit the requiredexpans'ion and contraction of the Iailends, `Whileat the same time,
l Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: The herein` described rail chair constructed to t the base flanges, and Webs of abutting rails, bolts passed through openings Ain the chair and in the web'portions of' the rails, yielding Washers tted to said bolts, nuts upon said bolts, cotter pins for holding said nuts in position,
and countersunk bolts passing through the base portion of i the chair, said bolts designed to pass through .a tie,l and nuts tted 'on the ends of said bolts under said tie, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof; I alllx my' signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH W'. TROTTER.
