RAIL-JOINT.
Application filed August 10, 1915.
Y To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. KELLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing. at Lavelle, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which'the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in connecting the meeting ends of railway rails, and an object of the invention is.
to provide a simple, effective and cheap de vice of this character whereby the wheels of the rolling stock will be prevented from leaving the rails when crossing'the usual gap between the rails, so that a substantially continuous rail is provided.
A further object of the invention is to so construct and connect. the meeting ends of two railway'rails that the same willbe effectively sustained against lateral movement and permitted only a limited longitudinal movement incident to the expansion and contraction of the rails.
With the above and other objects in View, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specificationv and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of-two rails connected and constructed in accordance with the present invention,
a perspective View of one of the rail ends,
and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the chair.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numerals l designate two rails which have their bodies of the ordinary construction, the said rails, however, adjacent their ends having their webs thickened so that the sides of the same are arranged flush with the sides of the heads. The rails, atthe said thickened portionsvare cut transversely and longitudinally to provide extensions 2, one of the faces of the said extension being flush with one of the sides of the rail, the opposite face being beveled from the end of the extension to the transverse out which provides the shoulder which is designated by the numeral 3. The shoulder provided by the Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb. 29,1916.
Serial No. 44,730.
rails 1 are adapted to contact with the cen- 1 tral vertically arranged rib 6 provided upon the central and channel portion 7 of a rail chair 8. The outer Walls of the channel are vertically straight and are indicated by the numerals 9 and the said walls 9 are adapted to contact with the outer straight walls or surfaces of the rail extensions 2. The thickness of the rib 6 is suificient to provide for a web engagement of the rail extensions between the same and the straight walls 9 and the said rib is also of sufficientlength to permit of the ends of the rail extensions contacting with the shoulders 3 outwardly of that contacted by the ends of the rib 6, While the. shoulders 4 contact with the ends of the base portion of the chair.
The angularly disposed rib, as well as the rail extensions 2 are provided with suitable alining bolt openings, through which pass the usual bolts which are provided with the ordinary securing nuts, and the outer longitudinal edges of the base of the chair may be inclined and notched, the said notches providing pockets for the reception of securing spikes which enter the ties 10.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: V
In a rail joint, two rails having their webs thickened at the ends thereof disposed flush with the sides of the head, the said ends being cut transversely, vertically and longitudinally to provide extensions, the outer faces of the extensions being flush with one of the faces of the head, the inner faces of received- Within the channel and to have their I In testimony whereof I aflix signature 7 angular faces contacting with the opposite in presence 'oftwo Witnesses.
'faces of the rib, and cut baseportions engaging With the ends of said chair, t tans 5 verse means for securing the extensions to the rib, and means fcr secur-ingthe chair to the supporting ties;
