To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL FRANKLIN WILLIAMsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wainscoting, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to iiilprovements in wainscoting and while particularly adapted for the wainscoting of vestibules the invention is not limited in its application to this particular situation.

It is the object of my invention to improve the ordinary wooden wainscoting by combining therewith tiling, the said tiling presenting a panel effect when applied to one portion of the wainscoting, and when combined with the base of the wainscoting serving as a wash-board or a molding which will not be injuriously affected'by water and which will not be injured by the ordinary operations of cleaning the floor adjacent to the wainscoting.

In carrying out my invention I combine with the wooden frame or wainscoting, tiling permanently carried thereby so that the wainscoting with the tiling may be made up at the factory and shipped as one complete article to be set up in the place intended for it without requiring the service of a tile setter or like expert workman.

As is well known, where wainscoting is used the lower portion directly adjacent the fioor is very soon marred and damaged by the action of water used in cleaning the floor and after a considerable period of time the wood adjacent the floor begins to crack and decay In my invention I place tiling at the lower part of the wainscoting attached permanently thereto to be shipped or moved therewith as one body, the said tiling not only presenting a highly ornamental appearance but also serving as a protection to the lower edge or portion of the wooden wainscoting and preventing the decaying thereof by the action of water.

The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line yy of Fig. 1.

In these drawings 1 indicates the wainscoting formed of wood or other suitable material and at the base thereof is represented at w the tiling. This is applied to the wainscoting along the lower edge and upon the front face thereof for which purpose the tiling is of right angular shape, having a vertical portion and having a horizontal flange 3 extending beneath the lower edge of the wainscoting. The tiling is grooved on the back face of its vertical portion so as to fit upon a bar of iron or other material 3 of dove tail or similar form and which is screwed orotherwise secured to the front face of the lower part of the wainscoting. The tiling may be of one continuous piece, but I prefer to form it of blocks in the ordinary way and locate these directly adjacent to each other on the dove tail bar. The upper edge of the tiling is hidden beneath the bead or molding 4 which is screwed or nailed to the face of the wainscoting and has a dependent lip 5 extending downover the upper edge and in front of the tiling blocks. It will be clear that the wainscoting with the tiling attached may be shipped and handled as one body after being completed at the factory and that when set up the lower edge of the wainscoting will be thoroughly protected against the action of water or against damage from contact by the cleaning implement, and further'the tiling reaching under the edge of the wainscoting will prevent access of water thereto, thus preventing decaying and providing a sanitary connection with the floor at this point.

I have shown at 5 panels formed of tiling, thesepanels being provided by making openings in the wainscoting and setting tiling blocks therein having their faces ornamented as may be desired. The openings in the wainscoting are surrounded by suitable beads or moldings such as indicated at 6, and the tiling may be secured in place in a manner somewhat similar to that above described. For this purpose the paneled tiles are formed of horizontal grooves of dovetail form to fit upon bars or ribs 7 secured to wooden blocks or boards 8. The tiles are first secured to these boards by moving them on to the dove-tail bars and then these boards carrying the tiles are secured in the openings formed in the wainscoting by any suitable form of clips such as indicated at 9. It will be understood of course that these tile panels are made up at the factory and applied to the wainscoting to make a complete article ready for shipment or handling without requiring the services of a tile setter when the wainscoting is set up.

While I have described a tongue and groove connection between the tiling and the wainscoting I do not wish to limit myself in this connection as other means may be employed.

I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a wainscoting of wood or the like, a tiled washboard or base portion extending along the lower part of the \vainscoting and carried permanently by the wainscoting to be handled as one body, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a wainscoting' of wood or the like, tiling at the lower edge thereof extending beneath the edge thereof and also vertically at the front, substantially as described.

3. In combination with the wainscoting, tiling attached directly thereto at the lower portion thereof and a bead or molding extending along and overhanging the upper edge of the tiling, and secured to the wainscoting substantially as described.

4. In combination with the wainscoting, tiling extending along the lower portion thereof and having a tongue and groove connection therewith extending substantially parallel with the lower edge of the wainscoting, substantially as described.

5. In combination with the wainscoting a tongue extending along the same substantially parallel with its lower edge, grooved tiling engaging the said tongue and a 10 bead secured to the wainscoting, and overhanging the upper edge of the tiling, substantially as described.
