Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whomv it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J B UCKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newlicld, in the county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Rocking-Chair, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a rocking chair provided with springs which are connected respectively with the rockers and base of the chair, so as to assist in the motions of the chair and prevent shifting or displacement of the body thereof and means for adjusting 01' regulating the tension of the springs, so that the proper pressure may be exerted by the latter, the action of which is communicated to the body of the chair, according to the requirements thereof.

It further consists of means for supporting the legs and feet of the occupant of the chair, said means being eonnectible with the seat of the chair so as to form in a measure a continuity thereof and follow the rocking motions of the body of the chair as will be hereinafter described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a rocking chair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents longitudinal section of a portion showing Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale.

Referring to the drawings: A designates the body of the chair, and B the rockers thereof, the latter being imposed upon the base 0.

D designates levers, each of which is pivoted as at E to the base C and has its free end connected by the link F with the round F, the latter extending from the opposite rockers l3 and being secured thereto.

G designates springs, preferably coiled, each of whose upper ends is connected with alever D and whose lower end is attached to the screw H which is passed freely through the round I and has fitted on its lower end the nut K, said round I extending from opposite sides of the base C and being secured thereto.

It will be seen that when the body is operated, it rocks on the base Q and its motions are assisted by the springs G which expand and contract with said motions, it being also seen, that owing to the levers D and springs G and their connected parts, the body is retained on the base 0 and prevented from shifting thereon or displacement therefrom. It will also be i seenthat the nut K is convenient of access and the 1 tension of the springs G may be nicely adjusted thereby so as to exert proper pressure on the levers D and consequently on the body of the chair.

lt will be noticed that I utilize the rounds F and .l which are held at each end by the opposite members of the chair for securing the connecting members of the springs thereto, they being well enabled to endure the severe downward and upward strain to which the springs subject them.

L designates a frame whose inner or rear end is pivotally connected as at M to the forward side of the seat N of the body of the chair, the other end of said frame being mounted on the rollers or wheels P. Rising from said frame is the pad Q on which the legs of the occupant of the chair may be rested, it being noticed that said pad occupies an inclined position so as to rise at its rear or inner end where it is approximately level with the forward end of the seat N. For purposes of lightness and strength, said pad Q, is connected with the frame L by means of the posts R which are attached to said rest and frame as most plainly shown in Fig. 2.

In the side pieces of the frame L are openings S which are adapted. to receive the respective limbs 'l of the rest U against which the feet may be braced, said rest extending transversely on said frame, its limbs being adapted to be placed in either of the openings S, whereby the rest may be adjusted according to requirements, it being evident that in the motions of the chair, the pad and rest follow the same, thus providing comfortable means for supporting the legs and feet of the occupant.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

In a rocking chair, a round connecting the opposite side a lever pivotally connected at one end with said base, a link connected with the other end of said lever and with said round, a round connecting the opposite side members of said base, a spring attached at one end to said lever intermediate of the ends thereof, a threaded link secured to the other end of said spring and adapted to movably engage the round of the base, and a device engaging the threads of said link adapted to bear against and tighten upon the last named round to secure said link and adjust the tension of said spring.
