TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.
Application filed July 19,1906- Serial No. 326,870-
To all 'zvhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN P. WYsARD, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Erie. in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
The invention in its preferred form is designed to operate as a top, and also through its momentum under the action of the blades presenting a slanting surface to the air, gives the top an initial flight.
Other details of the invention will appear more fully from the description and claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows: Figure 1 shows a plan view of the preferred construction. Fig. 2 a central section of the top socket with an elevation of the top therein. Fig. 3, a plan view of an ordinary top arranged in the top socket, the construction shown being a modification of that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4, a section of the socket with the top in elevation therein, the same being of a construction similar to that shown in Fig. 3.
The top socket A has the central opening a of suflicient size to permit of the insertion of the stem of the top and the winding of the cord. The cord is let out from the side through a slot a. The top B has the spindle b which extends through the opening a in the body of the socket A. The body l3 rests on the edge of the socket or opening a. The cord C may be wound in any desired manner, the end being drawn through the slot a as stated Q The end of the spindle b has the point 12 to reduce the friction while the top is spinning. Secured to the top body are the blades B which are inclined as shown so that when rotated their action upon the air lifts the top and gives it an initial flight.
The top body has preferably the lateral openings 1) extending through it which are connected with an axial opening b (see dotted lines, Fig. 2). A whistle opening b is arranged to communicate with the opening b When the top is in action the centrifugal force creates a current outwardly through the lateral openings b and this effects the movement of air through the passage b thus sounding the whistle.
In the alternative constructions shown in Figs. 3 and 4, an ordinary top body B provided with a stem b is placed in the opening a in the socket A. The end extends into the opening a and the cord 0 arranged around'the stem b is drawn through the slot a in the manner heretofore described What I claim as new is:
1. In a toy the combination of a top body having a cord winding stem extending therefrom; a socket A larger than the stem but of a size to contact the walls of the body and having a perforation a? into which the stem extends; and a slot (1 through which the cord may be drawn.
.5. In a toy the combination of a top 'body having a cord winding stem extending therefrom a socket A larger than the stem but of a size to contact the walls of the body and having a perforation into which the stem extends and a slot 11 extending the length of the winding portion of the stem of the toy whereby the top may be put in motion without moving the same axially.
In a top the combination of a top body having a cord winding stem extending therefrom; a socket A larger than the stem but of a size to contact the walls of the body and having a perforation (1. into which the stem extends,
'and a slot (1 through which the cord may be drawn; and
inclined blades on the top body.
4. In a top the combination of a top body having a cord winding stein extending therefrom; a socket A larger than the stem but of a size to contact the walls of the body and having a perforation a into which the stem extends, and a slot a extending the length of the winding portion of the stem of the top whereby the top may be put in mo tion without moving the same axially, and inclined blades on the top body.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IIERMANN l. \VYSARD.
Witnesses B. F. PARKER, B. H. IIriLLIrs.
