To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SOLOMON Scnwanzscnrtn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Over-shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates more especially to that class of overshoes known as foot-holds, designed to cover the forward portion only of the foot, and consists n the novel combination and arrangement of parts herein described and more particularly pointed out in the accompanying claims.

In order to more fully describe my said invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and wherein,

The overshoe shown in the accompanying drawing comprises, among othei parts, a sole 1 of rubber or other suitable water proof material having a shank extension 2, slanting abruptly upward from the main portion of the sole and adapted to extend well back under the instep. Attached to this sole piece around its edges, as at 3, by cement or otherwise, is the vamp 4, which may consist of a piece of fabric 5 coated on the outside with rubber 6, as is common in overshoe construction.

Instead of having the vamp stop short at the approach to the instep, in the present overshoe it extends well up over the instep forming, together with the sole extension 2, a shank 7, which completely envelops the instep.

In order to permit the overshoe to be readily placed on the shoe of the wearer the shank extension of the vamp is divided as at S, substantially down the center over the top of the instep to the point 9. The material down this division, however, is not appreciably cut away so that the adjacent edges of the opposite sides of the extension may be drawn substantially together when the overshoe is on the foot. The function of this extension shank is two-fold: It provides protection to the foot of the wearer against water and at the same time tightly embraces the shank of the foot thereby securely holding the overshoe in place and rendering unnecessary the use of heel straps or extra retaining devices for this purpose.

Attached permanently to the shank of the overshoe 011 one side of the division 8 is the fiap 10 which consists in the case shown of a piece of fabric 11 impregnated with rubber composition and having a coating on the outside of sheet-rubber 12,,vulcanized to the said rubber impregnated fabric, the two together having a limited amount of elasticity, (see Fig. 3).

A reinforcing piece 13 of rubber impregnated fabric of substantially the same outline as the flap 10, is secured to the top of the overshoe shank on one side of the division 8 andis adapted to be covered by said flap when the- Iatter is fastened.

The free end of the flap 10 is attachable to the side of the overshoe shank by means of snap fastenings, having members 14 secured to the flap and members 15 secured to the overshoe shank.

When the free end of the flap 10 is fastened by means of the snap fastenings, the edges of the shank adjacent to the division 8 are drawn substantially together, the elasticity of the flap tending to pull the shank tightly around the instep.

As additional means to prevent the slipping of the overshoe, the same is provided with an adhesive insole, 16, which may consist of loosely woven textile fabric impregnated with rubber, preferably unvulcanized. Such an insole adheres to the shoe sole of the wearer without leaving the same sticky when the overshoe is removed, thus providing a very efficient means for preventing the accidental slipping of the overshoe on the shoe of the wearer. This may further be prevented by providing the overshoe with an adhesive band 17 around the interior of the foot entrance of the shank. This band may consist of the same material as the insole 16 and is separated at the top as at 18 so as not to interfere with the opening 8. This band may also be elastic. A toe cap 19 may be provided, but this forms no essential part of my invention.

What I do claim as my invention is:-

1. A foot-hold comprising a vamp and sole, a shank formed by a continuation of said vamp and sole and adapted to completely envelop the instep, the said shank being divided substantially down the center over the instep, a flap attached permanently to said shank on one side of said division, means to detachably secure the free end of said flap to said shank on the other side of said division, the flap when so fastened drawing the adjacent divided portions of said shank substantially together, and a band around and fast to the interior of the foot entrance of said shank having an adhesive exterior surface adapted to engage the shank of the shoe of the wearer.

2. A foot-hold comprising a vamp and sole, a shank formed by a continuation of said vamp and sole and adapted to completely envelop the instep, the said shank being divided substantially down the center over the insten, a flap attached permanently to, said shank on one side 0i said division, means to detachably secure the free end of said flap to said shank on the other side of said division, the flap when so fastened drawing the adjacent divided portions of said shank substantially together, a band around 10 and fast to the interior of the foot entrance of said shank having an adhesive exterior surface adapted to engage the shank of the shoe of the wearer, and an insole having an adhesive upper surface adapted to contact with the shoe sole of the wearer.
