ARTHUR VYVYAN BROWN, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed May 7, 1907. Serial No. 372,415.
To all 'IlhOllI it "may concern:
Be it known that ARTHUR VYVYAN BROWN, :1. subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 6 Lavell street, Albion Road, Stoke Newington, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in pparatus for Sharpening the Knives of Guillotine (utiing -lllaehines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct an apparatus operable by hand for sharpening the knives of guillotine cutting machines, the grinding disk or disks of such apparatus adjusting itself or themselves or being capable of adjustment to the angle of the knife edge and position of the knife.
My invention will be. clearly understood by the following description aided by the accompanying drawings in which- F igure l is a plan of the appliance; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; l ig. 3 is a pla n of one of the angled frames showing one disk or wheel in section.
For the purpose of my invention, I pivot to lugs 1 projecting from a base plate 2 a curved or angled frame or frames 3, one portion having a hole or holes for carrying one or more axles 4 of the emery or stone disks 5, said axles being removable but iixable by a screw nut or other device (3. Another lug or lugs 7 on the base 2, 1 form with a screw-threaded hole for receiving a screw or screws 8, oneend of which had a bearing on a lug 9 of the frame 3 to limit the degree of move-. mcnt'oi the frame or frames 3 in one direction, so as to determine the position of the disks at one angle, and the base is provided with a screw or screws 10, which act on lugs 11. on the frame 2 to limit the movement of the frame 3 in the other direction.
Each disk 5 is mounted on a wood block 12 carrying a rubber, leather, kamptulicon or other ring 13 which acts as a tire on which the. disk and block run when moved along the knife 14, and each axle is provided with a head situate within a recess of each sharpening disk so that when the axles are secured in position on the frames 3, the disks 5 are prevented falling away.
The baseplate 2 is provided with a handle 15 and by grasping same and pressing the disk or disks 5 up against the angled knife edge 14 with the rubber ring 13 and a roller 16 of the frame 2 on the table, a movement of the apparatus. along the'kniie edge and pressed against same will cause the disks to revolve. and sharpen the cutting edge.
The emery disks 5 and the wood blocks l2 with the tire [3 are secured together by cement or otherwise and I prefer'that the wood blocks 12 be provided with a metal bearing 17 having a flange 18 to cover part of the face of the block and such blocks are mounted somewhat looscly on the axle 4 to adjust. themselves to a certain degree against the angled edge of the knife l4 and the blocks are kept up to their position by springs 19.
What I claim is 1. in a device for sharpening knives. the combination of a frame, one or more grinding disks carried by and adapted to oscillate with respect to said frame, and adjustable means for limiting the oscillation of said disks.
2. In a device for sharpening: knives, the combination of a frame, one or more revoluble and yioldable grinding disks carried by said frame, and resilient tread surfaces for said disks.
3. The combination with a movable frame, of one or more arms pivotaily connected thereto, one or more revoluble and yieldabl grinding disks mounted thereon projections carried by said arms, and adjustable means mounted on said frame for engaging said projections and thereby limiting the movement of the arms.
4. In a device for sharpening knives, the combination of a movable frame, one or more arms pivotally connected thereto, a revoluble grinding disk, a metallic bushing, a block having a resilient tread carried by said bushing and secured to said disk, :1. spring engaging the lower flanged portion of said bushing, and an axle extending through said bushing and spring and detachably secured to said arm.
in a device for sharpening knives, the combination of a frame and one or more grinding disks carried by said frame, of means for causing said disks to automatically adjust themselves to the angle of the knife edge and the position of the knife.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
An'rHUn vYv'YAN BROWN.
