THOMAS F. HERBERT, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO MARTIN II. TIERNEY, OF SAME PLACE, AND DANIEL R. DWYER, OF PEPPERELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
LAWNNIOWER SHARPENER.
SPECIFICA'JFION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,290, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed July 8,1899. Serial No. 723,188. (No model.) A
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. HERBERT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and use= ful Improvements in Lawn-Mower Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a device for sharpening the rotary knives of a lawn-mower.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a lawn-mower, showing my improved Sharpener attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional elevation, line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a horizontal section taken on line 4. el, Fig. 2.
Like letters and numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is asharpener-board covered upon the under side with emery 6. Said sharpener-board has two angle-irons 7 7, fast thereto. An eyebolt 8 is pivoted on a pin 9 between the angle-irons 7 7, said eyebolt being cylindrical at the portion 10 and screwthreaded 'to receive the thu mb-nut 11. Said cylindrical portion 10 passes through a slot 12 in the angle-iron 13 and has a cylindrical iiange 14 formed thereon and a washer 15 between said thumb-nut and the upper face of said angle-iron 13, so that by screwing up 0n the thulnb'nut ll the washer 15 and cylindrical flange 14. will be clamped against the upper and lower sides, respectively, of the angle-iron 13 and prevent the eyebolt 8 from moving in the slot 12. A sliding block 16 in the slot 12 is screw-threaded to receive a thumb-screw 17. The lower end of said screw bears against a flat spring 13, said flat spring being slotted at 19 19 to receive the screws 2O 20, by which said springs are con nected to the board 5.
The vertical portion of the angle-iron 13 is adjustably fastened to a clamp-holder 21 by a bolt 22 and thumb-nut 23. Said bolt passes through a slot 24. in said vertical portion of angle-iron 13, so that the said angle-iron can be raised or lowered, as may be desired. The clamp-holder 21 is forked at 25 to straddle the cross-bar B of the lawn-mower A and is fastened to said cross-bar by a set-screw 27.
It will be noted that there are two complete sets of the adjusting parts hereinbefore described.
In the drawings, Fig. 2, the emery-faced sharpener-board 5 is shown bearing tangentially against the cutting edges of the rotary cutters O of the lawn-mower A.
In adjusting the device it will be seen that by moving the eyebolt 8 and sliding block 16 horizontally in the slot 12, as described, all portions of the emery surface 6 may be brought into contact with the cutting edges of the rotary knives O. Again, it will be seen that by means of the screw 17 in the sliding block 16 more or less pressure may be applied to the board 5, and hence the enlery surface G may be pressed with greater or less force against the knives O by means of the springs 18, against which the end of the screw 17 bears. It will, again, be obvious that the Sharpener-board 5 may be raised or lowered to fit varying sizes of knives by means of the bolt 22 and thumbscrew 23, whereby the angle-iron 13 is raised or lowered and fastened to the clamp-holder 2l.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to secure, isl 1. A lawn-mower Sharpener, consisting of a Sharpener-board, means for attaching said sharpener-board to a lawn-mower and means for adjusting said board tangentially with relation to the rotary knives of said lawn= mower, in combination with means for forcing said sharpener-board against the cutting edges of the rotary knives of said lawnmower with a yielding pressure.
2. A lawn-xnower Sharpener, consisting of a sharpener-board, means for attaching said Sharpener-board to a lawn-mower, and means for adjusting said board radially and tangentially with relation to the rotary knives of said lawn-mower in combination with means iron adjustably fastened to a clamp-holder 21, adapted to be Secured to a lawn-mower, and having a sliding block 16 and Screw 17 thereon, said Screw 17 arranged to bear against a spring 18, attached to Said sharpener-board, Substantially as described for the purpose Specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto Set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS F. HERBERT.
