FURNACE FOR HEATING NAIL-PLATES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Boyd and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces for Heating Nail-Plates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a furnace for heating nail plates and has for its object the provision of a device of the character of that shown in United States Patent 843,620, issued to me on the 12th day of February,
The object of the invention is to provide a furnace of the character shown in said patent, but constructed in such manner that the piles of nail plates may be moved bodily from said furnace to permit the nippcr boys to read ily grasp the heated nail plates with a pair of nippers and also the provision of means for locking said nail plates in this latter position.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation of a furnace constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a view partly in rear elevation and partly in section of said furnace, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the movable supports for the piles of nail plates.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a preferably rectangular base portion, which is mounted upon a pedestal 6 and a top portion 7, the inner walls of said top portion being preferably lined with asbestos or other flame resisting material indicated at 8. The furnace is sub-divided by a central partition of flame resisting material indicated at 9. It will therefore be seen that the structure shown and described, comprises substantially two furnaces arranged side by side. The front of each of these furnaces is closed by a door 10 which is interiorly lined by flame resisting material 11. Handles 12 provide means for swinging these doors open upon their hinges 13. Burners 14 which are preferably gas burners and which are supplied with air through pipes 15, provide means for heating the piles of nail plates indicated at 16. Deflectors 17 are adapted to spread the flame from the burners 14 against the piles of nail plates.
As is best illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, abutments 16 are arranged upon each side of the combustion chamber 17 and substantially L-shaped supports 18 are mounted to slide upon these abutments. Webs 19 prevent transverse movement of the nail plates 16 with relation to the supports ]8, in one direction. furnace and the rear portion of the support 18 is inclined in such manner that the front end of each of the nail plates overhangs the front end of the nail plate immediately below it. By virtueof this construction, the nipper boy is enabled to readily grasp the highly heated nail plate to withdraw it from the furnace.
Pivoted between cars 20 which are secured to the rear wall of the furnace is a lever 21. The lower end of this lever is forked and these forked portions are slotted as at 22 for the reception of pivots 23, these pivots connecting the forked portions of the lever with rods 24, said rods being in turn riveted at 2 5 to the inclined rear walls of the supports 18.
It is to be understood that there are two piles of nail plates in each of the furnaces and that there are two furnaces. There will therefore be two of the levers 21, one of said levers being arranged upon the rear wall of each of the furnaces. Latches 26 are pivoted at 27 to the levers 21 and these latches are adapted to fall down between the levers and the rear walls of the furnaces to serve a purpose which will be hereinafter described.
The products of combustion from the burners 14 pass upwardly between and are deflected against the piles of nail plates, by the deflectors 17. These products of combustion pass over the tops of the piles of nail. plates and down between said nail plates and the side .walls of the furnaces, passing thence to the interior of the base 5 and from said base through a flue 29, in the manner set forth in the patent hereinbcfore referred to. When the plates have been heated to the desired point,
the doors 11 are swung upwardly upon the hinges 13 and the upper portion of the lever 21 of the furnace, the door of which has been opened, is grasped and pulled rearwardly. This forces the rod 24 forward and projects the two piles of nail plates contained in that particular furnace, through the front door of said furnace to such position that the overhanging ends of the nail plates may readily be grasped by the nipper boys, the supports 18 sliding upon the abutments 16 at this time.
It will readily be seen that after the latch 26 falls to such position that it lies, between the rear wall of the furnace and the lever 21, that the nail plates will be held against rearward movement while the nipper boy is manipulating them. The nail plates in one of the furnaces are heated during the time that the nail plates are being removed from the other furnace.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while The rear wall of 1th 0 the elements shown and described are well adapted to the details of construction set forth, but includes Within its purview such changes as maybe madezwithin the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1v In a furnace for heating nail plates, the combination with a heat producing element, of a movable support having an overhanging rearwall against which the rear ends of the nail plates lie, and means for moving said support bodily toward the front of the furnace.
2. In a furnace for heating nail plates, the combination with a heat producing element, of a movable support having an overhanging rear wall against which the rear ends of the nail plates lie, means for moving said support bodily toward the front of the furnace, and means for locking said support at its forward limit of movement.
I The combination with a furnace for heating nail plates, of a door for the front of said furnace, a movable support adapted to support a pile of nail plates, said support having an inclined rear wall against which the piles of nail plates lie, and means controllable from the exterior of the furnace for moving said support toward the front of the furnace.
4. The combination with a furnace for heating nail plates, of a door for the front of said furnace, a movable support adapted to support a pile of nail plates, said support having an inclined rear wall, means controllable from the exterior of the furnace for moving said support toward the front of the furnace, and means for lockingsaid support at its forward limit of movement.
In a furnace for heating nail plates, the combination with a heat producing element, of abuiments loeaied above and at each side of said heat producing element, movable supports mounted upon said abutments and adapted to support piles of nail plates, and means controllable from the exterior of the furnace for sliding said supports upon said abutments.
