BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed April 8, 1907. $erial N0. 367,064:-
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIER CLYDE HIZAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in what are commonly known as non-refillable bottles, which cannot be emptied of their original contents after having been once filled and closed without destroying a portion thereof, so that the fraudulent refilling of the bottle after it has been emptied of its original contents may be prevented.
My invention has for its object the provision of a simple and efficient closure of this character which cannot be removed from the neck of the bottle after having been applied and which therefore necessitates the breaking off of the neck of the bottle to enable the contents to be emptied; and a further object is to provide means whereby any broken particles or fragments of glass that may result from the breaking of the neck of the bottle are prevented from getting into the contents of the bottle.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the bottle and stopper; Fig. 2 and Fig. 2 together form a similar view showing the upper part of the neck of the bottle broken off and removed from the lower part; Fig. 3 shows a central vertical section of the central plug or stopper; Fig. 4 shows a similar section of the gasket or packing; Fig. 5 is a view of the wire catch; Fig. 6 shows a view, partly in section, of the thimble, and Fig. 7 is a view of the wire ring which is cast in the neck of the bottle I have illustrated in the drawings a bottle of ordinary form having a neck portion to which my invention is applied. The closure comprises a central stopper or plug or, preferably of glass or like material, having a circular flange Z at its top and a smaller flange m at its bottom and a transverse perforation 9 below the upper flange. A collar 1) of cork or rubber or other suitable material, surrounds the plug a between its flanges and forms a gasket or packing to prevent the escape of the contents of the bottle. This gasket is also perforated, opposite the perforation g in the plug, and a bent wire catch or retainer 0 passed through these perforations, thence on each side it is bent downwardly, embedded in the gasket along its outer surface, the extreme ends being formed into hooks k which are adapted to snap over the edge t of an annular recess formed in the neck of the bottle, when the bottle is closed, to retain the stopper and gasket in closed position against either gaseous pressure from the contents of the bottle or any force tending to draw the stopper which it might be possible to apply. Near the mouth of the neck of the bottle the bore of the neck is enlarged, forming a circular shouldered recess within which the flange Z of the plug fits snugly, leaving no projection or irregularity of surface which would afford a hold to enable the plug to be withdrawn. Below the annular recess a thimble d, the lower end of which is rolled back to form a cir cular bead or ring f at the bottom, is cast in the neck of the bottle, the bead, which is embedded in the inner wall of the lower end of the neck portion of the bottle, serving to fix the thimble irremovably in place. The thimble is preferably slightly tapered .towards its upper end. A metal ring 0 is also cast in the neck of the bottle, embedded in its outer wall and adjacent the middle portion of the thimble, which has the effect of making the glass more susceptible to fracture in the plane of the ring than elsewhere along the neck; and a sharp blow on the neck of the bottle will therefore break it at this point, when the upper portion of the neck, containing the closure elements, may be readily removed, the slight taper of the thimble above the ring facilitating this operation.
It is obvious that a groove around the neck of the bottle at the point where the ring is located would serve to weaken it at that point, and answer the same purpose, and my invention is therefore not limited to the employment of the ring except as to those claims in which the ring is expressly mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. A bottle comprising a bottle having a neck portion provided with a recess at its top forming an internal annular shoulder and also provided with an intermediate internal annular recess, a plug having a flange fitting snugly within said top recess and provided with a transverse perforation, a packing or gasket having a like perforation and surrounding saidplug below its flange, and a wire catch passing through said perforations in the plug and gasket and provided with hooked ends adapted to snap into the intermediate annular recess and prevent the withdrawal of the plug and gasket 1n the neck of the bottle.
A bottle comprising a bottle having a neck portion provided with an internal annular recess, a plug provided with a transverse perforation, a gasket or packing having a like perforation surrounding said plug, and a wire catch passing through said perforations in the plug and gasket and provided with hooked ends adapted to snap into the annular recess and prevent the withdrawal of the plug and gasket from the neck of the bottle.
3. A bottle comprising a bottle having a neck portion provided with an internal annular recess, a plug provided with a transverse perforation, a gasket or packing having a like perforation surrounding said plug, a wire catch passingthrough said perforations in the plug and gasket and provided with hooked ends adapted to snap into the annu lar recess and prevent the withdrawal of the plug and gasket, and a thirnble fitting within the neck portion of the bottle below said annular recess and irremovably fixed at its lower end to the inner wall of the bottle, said neck portion of the bottle being provided with means adapting it to be broken transversely intermediate the ends of the thimble.
