15e it known that I, CLARENCE E. GU'rHnioGn, a resident ol` Pittsburg, in the county'of Allegheny and Stat-e of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful ,lmprovenient in Ruil-Stays; and I do hereby declare the following to be a lull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a rail stay or anti-rail creeper, its object being to provide-a simple yet eilective device of this character which may be readily formed from wrought metal if desired.
To these ends my invention comprises, gener-.illy stated, a rail stay comprising a bar adapted to extend aerossthe bottom et' the rail base, snid bar having at one end a clip formed integral therewith adapted to engage the [lange of the rail at one side, the opposite end of said bar having an abrupt downwardly projecting portion, and a removztble clip adapted to engage the opposite ilango of the rail, said clip having a downwardly projecting portion and means for connecting the downwardly projecting portion ofthe bar and said removable elipf In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side view of a portion of a railway track showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of same; l ig. 3,15 a cross-section; Fig. 4 is a perspective view o1 the septirate portions of the rail stay; Figs. 5 and 6 show a modified form of my invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing the numeral 2 designates a rail supported in the ordinary manner upon the ties 3 by moans of spikes 4. The rail stay 6 comprises the bar 7 which may be formed ol wrought metal extending across the under side of the rail base, said bnr having the clip S adapted to eng-.ige the flange oi thernil on one side of said rail. At the opposite end of the bar 7 is the downwardly projecting portion 9 with the oblong opening l0 formed therein. The downwardly projecting portion i) is slightly curved or bowed nt tlfas indicat'ed, tor the purpose hereinafter set forth. i Engaging the opposite llange oi' the rail 2 is the movnble clip 11 which has the downwardly projecting portion l2 with an opening 13 coinciding with the opening 1.0 in the portion 9. lhe bolt 15 is adapted to chimp the movable clip 1l to the portion t), said bolt having the oblong neck 16 just below its head, which oblong neck is adapted to engage the oblong opening 10 in the porl tion 9, whereby the bolt is held from turning when they nut 17 is applied thereto. It will be apparent that owing to the curved portion'tl of the portion 9 the downwardly projecting portion l2 of the clip l1 will engage only two point-s of the fiange 9, leaving a space between said portion 9 and the downwardly projecting portion 12 of the clip 11. As a consequence when the nut 17 is tightened there will be a certain spring or resiliency between tlie two parts, which will act to lock the nut 17 and prevent its loosening on the bolt. This spring orresiliency will tend to take up any wear whieh would tend to loosen the clip ill, and act to still hold said clip securely in place.
As the portions 9 and 12 'extend down from the bar 7 atene end thereof and bear against the faceo the tie to prevent the movement o the rail-stay in that direction, it will be apparent that any pressure tending to force said portions ngninst the tie-will also act io slightly twist the opposite end ot' the rail sto and so net to bind the rail tighter :uid prevent its liability of slipping or creeping.
