To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MONTGOMERY H. WATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tallying- Sheets; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tally sheets for tallying votes, and has for its object the provision of a tally sheet which greatly facilitates i the work of election clerks or judges, owing to the work being brought Within a comparatively narrow compass. In other words, instead o employing the usual lengthened tally sheet which necessitates the eye of the clerk following for a considerable distance, the particular line opposite the candidates name whose vote is being tallied, the tally sheet of the present invention is constructed to obviate this objectionable featureby bringing the work within a comparativelynarrow compass thus obviating the necessity of the clerk following with the eye and hand the proper line to a remote point from the name of the candidate whose vote is being tallied. These desirable objects are accomplished by means of the tally sheet illustrated in the accompanying drawing, towhich particular reference is now made.

The sheet A on the left is divided into a plurality of spaces B, the number of such spaces corresponding to the number of tickets, and each of which spaces is of proper dimensions to suit the number of candidates running on each particular ticket. The names of4 the tickets and the names of the respective candidates on each ticket appear on the extreme left hand sirle of said sheet A. Each of the spaces or divisions thus devoted to each ticket is provided at its head with numorals indicating the number 0f votes as tallied in each square of the vertical columns, said figures ranging from five upward in multiples of five up to the limit which in the drawing is shown to be fifty. Bound to the leaf A along the line C, is a supplemental tally sheet D of a width to extend to the right hand end of the spaces taken up with the candidates names on the sheet A, when said supplemental sheet D is laid over upon said sheet A as shown at the Socialist ticketk space or division on said sheet A. This supplemental divisions or spaces on sheet A. The said supplemental sheet D when its spaces are filled with the tally marks on one side, and which are continuations 0f the tally marks on sheet A, may be turned overas shown at the Socialist ticket division, and the other side of said supplemental sheet D may be utilized by continuing the tally marks thereon. In so turning over said supplemental sheet D or a section F thereof to be utilized in connection with any particular ticket, the section of said supplemental sheet to be so utilized is detached from the remainder of the sheet along the perforated line E as shown in the Socialist ticket section. The supplemental sheet D so constructed of the sections or divisions F, is joined to an under sheet H which is a continuation thereof and which is likewise divided into sections or divisions G, each of which is utilized in connection with a respective ticket when the two sides of all the sections F or of any one section F of the supplemental sheet of leaf D is filled. For example, the Socialist ticket contains on the initial section B spaces for tallying fifty votes; this is true of the other spaces or sections of the sheet A after these tally spaces have been filled, that particular section F of the supplemental tally sheet D is filled on its initial side to tally one hundred votes, the section of the supplemental sheet D so filled on one side is then turned over and the other side is utilized to continue the tally of the votes of that ticket up to its capacity which is one hundred and fifty votes. If the votes of the Socialist ticket or any other ticket, for example, exceeds that number,

plemental sheet D and the corresponding section or division G of the under sheet H may be utilized for tallying the vote oi that particular ticket by detaching the section F of the supplemental sheet along the perforated line E. The work of tallying the votes is thus brought within a comparatively small space; this renders the work of the clerk much less tedious and troublesome and more accurate than is possible by the use of a single tally sheet with the candidates7 names at one extreme side of the sheet and the tally spaces reaching a remote distance from said names to the other side of the sheet; or by the use of a single sheet of smaller dimensions where a single sheet is used for tallying the votes of a single ticket, thus requiring a constant turning of sheets in ord er to tally the votes of each ticket. Bythe use of the tally sheet herein shown and described, the ticket headings and the names of the candidates of each ticket are arranged upon a single sheet divided into distinct spaces and are always within the ordinary range of the vision. By means of the sectional supplemental sheet D Which forms a continuation on both sides of the sheet upon which the candidates naines appear, and the under sheet H which is united to said sheet D and forms a continuation of said supplemental sheet D7 the Work of tallying the votes of each ticket is, as before stated, brought Within a Comparatively small space and the Work is greatly facilitated.

The fly leaves or sections F oi the supplemental tally sheet D are provided on the opposite sides with appropriate figures arranged in the progressive order and which indicate the votes as tallied in each of the tally spaces, and likewise the sections G of the under sheet H is provided with figures to indicate the number ol votes tallied thereon.

Ilelaim:

A tally sheet comprising an initial sheet divided into sections each section containingl the naine of a ticket and the names of candidates and a series of spaces on one side of said naines formed by lines extendingr at right angles. a supplemental sheet of a length equal to that o1` said initial sheet and of a width equal to the portions of the. initial sheet which contain said spaces, said supplemental sheet having a series of spaces on lioth sides formed hy lines extending,r at right angles and corresponding in number and alining' with the spaces on the initial sheet, said supplemental sheet heilig provided with a series o1 transverse lilies of perforations dividingr it into sections equal in number and area to the portions of the sections of the initial sheet which contain the spaeesy and a final sheet of a length equal to the length of the initial sheet or the supplemental sheet, said iinal sheet hein; provided with a series of spaces formed by lines extendinyj'l at right angles and equal in number and area to the spaces on the initial sheet or one side of the supplemental sheet.
