Description

No. 867,308. PATENTED OCT. 1, 1907.
E. P. SEDGWIGK. PIANO PEDAL.
APPLIOATIOI FILED IA]. 10, 1907.
EARL P. SEDGWICK, OF HIGHLAND PARK, ILLINOIS.
PIANO-PEDAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1907.
Application filed January 10, 1907. Serial No. 351,681.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL P. SEDG WICK, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Highland Park, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Pedals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the pivotal connections between piano pedals and their supporting brackets or standards, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural formation and combination of parts affording a ready removal and replacement of the pedals, an effective adjustment to take up wear and avoid lost motion, and which at the same time provides a very durable and economical construction, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure l, is a plan view illustrating the present improvement applied to a piano pedal of the end pivot type. Fig. 2, is a similar view illustrating the application of the same to a piano pedal of the intermediate pivot type. Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail section on line Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a detail plan view of the supporting bracket or standard.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the flat attaching base member of the supporting bracket or standard, and which is preferably formed with ends 2 curved laterally in opposite directions and formed with orifices for the passage of the screws by which attachment is made to the bottom board of a piano. As so constructed said orifices lay to the sides of the pedal, when the same is in place, and no interference will be met in a ready and convenient application or removal of the attaching screws aforesaid.
3, are a pair of upright side members on the base 1, and formed integrally therewith, preferably as a sheet metal stamping bent into the form of bracket or standard shown in the drawing. Such side members have a separated relation equal to the width of the shank portion of the piano pedal so that the pedal shank may be located there between; and each member will be formed near its top with a horizontal pit or depression 4, in alined and opposed relation to the pit or depres sion of the companion side member, such pits or depressions forming journal bearings for the piano pedal as hereinafter described.
5, is the piano pedal of any usual form and having a flat rectangular shank by which it is pivotally attached within the body of the piano. In the present improvement such pedal shank is provided with outwardly projecting studs 6 integrally formed on the sides of said shank, and adapted to have journal bearing in the aforesaid pits or depressions 4 of the supporting bracket or standard.
The studs 6 and depressions 4, are preferably of the rounded form shown, but any other suitable form may be imparted thereto without departing from the spirit of this part of the present improvement.
7, is a headed bolt extending transversely through the upright side members 2 of the supporting bracket, midway the height of the same, and provided at one end with a nut 8, by the adjustment of which the upright side members are sprung towards each other to effect the connection of the journal depressions 4 and studs 6 in a ready and substantial manner, as well as to permit a ready detachment of the parts by a reverse movement of said nut.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
17 The combination in a piano pedal, of a supporting bracket formed with a fiat attaching base and a pair of upright side members having near their upper ends p posed journal depressions, a pedal the shank of which is provided with journal studs on its sides for engagement in said depressions, and a transverse bolt arranged midway the height of the side members and adapted to draw the same together; substantially as set forthv 2. The combination in a piano pedal, of": a supporting bracket formed with a flat attaching base having attach ing ends curved laterally in opposite directions and with a pair of upright side members having near their upper ends opposed journal depressions, a pedal the shank of which is provided with journal studs on its sides for engagement in said depressions, and a transverse bolt arranged midway the height of said members and adapted to draw the same together, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Highland Park Ills. this th day of January 1907.
EARL I SEDGIVICK.
