To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES W. LINDE, a citizen o1 the United useful Flashdoiler, of which the cation.
This invention has relation to ilasn boilers and .ir con ssts in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and desori bed.
The object of the invention is to provide a boiler which is adapted to lli-.sh water into steam and which is provided with an automatic means for supplying the water to the boiler, said means being so arranged and equipped that the water is cut oiff'when the steam within the boiler becomes too great or-the quant-ity oi water too large. That is to say, that excess ot' steam pressure or excessof quantity of water the supply ol water is cut off. 4`
The boiler consists of a coils which are connected following is a s peciiiseries of units in the form oi tgether and which are prol. any particular unit may be cut out of the boiler without relieving the other units of the pressure incidental to the performance of their In the accompanying drawingsz`l`igure l. is a side elevation of the boiler with one side of the casing re- Fig. 2 is a similar view of the boiler from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the boiler with the top of the casing removed. Fig'. 4 is a top plan view of one of the units used in the boiler, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional. view ot a lo'at mechanism used in connection with the boiler for regulating the flow oi water.
The boiler comprises the casing 1 which is provid-ed al. one end with the doors-2, 2 and in its interiorwith the baille plates-3. Said casing is also provided with a fire box and grate 4 and a forms a means for circulating the steam generators proper. The said generators are iithe form of units designated as a., b, c, d, @,f, g, h, i, j, lc respectively and lying in parallel planes one above theother and within the casing l. and about the bafiie plate'sS. Each unit is made up of a coil 6, one end of which is connected by means of a pipe section 6 with the transversely disposed pipe 7 which is located above the'co'il and which connects at its other end by means oapi-'phsection 6" with th next lower coil. in the manner as illustrated in Figs. l and 2 of the drawing. Thus, each unit consists of a. coil lying'in a plane and a transverse section in elevated position with relation to the coil. The coils are so connectedup in the arrangement of the generators or units that the water is first introduced into thev upper unit a and from said unit into the next lower unitb and so on down through the entire set, an exception being provided at an intermediate unit j as .will be hereinafter explained.

.fis .shown in 11g. `l the pipe section 7 the. .ip er end of a cylinder 11, connects 'with the. unit j, which is next to the lowest unit in the series.- The perforated plates 12 are located in the cylinder 11 near .the upper andv lower ends thereoi. The iioai'` 13 is loca-ted in the cylinder l1 and is provided et its upper:` end with a rod. 14 which passes thro the '.:enterol Lb upper plate i. The tube l5 `cd to the levier ond. of the Hoet 13 and communica't i with the interior thereof. Said tube isopen at both ends and passes through the center of the lower plate l2. 'ihe rod 14 and tube 15 serve as guides for the float 13 and the plates 12, l2 limit the .longitudinal movement oi the float within vthe cylinder-11.' The crank shaft lo is journaled in a lateral projection of the cylinder 1l and has one of its ends connected with the connects with the lower end of which rod.14 and its other end with a rod 17 which in turn is p connected with the sten. of a throttle valve 18. The pump 19 is suppoited at any convenient point andv is connected with the 21 connects sadpnnip with 4the upper -unit a of the generator. The lowest unit k of the generator is connected with the steam pipe 22 which in turn is provided with a branch 23 which leads to the pump 19 and convoys steani to the ,sn-me. Pipe 24 connects with the pump 19 and is ior conveying condensed steam away from the saine. The valve'l is located upon the pipe A2S as is also the valve 25. The safety valve 26 is inonted upon the steam pipe 22 and is provided with a laterally disposed cylinder 27 yin 'which is located a piston 28 attached to the piston rod 29. The outer end ofthe piston rod 29. is pivotally connected to on end of the lever .2Q and the rod 31 is pivoted' at one, end to 4the otheriend of. said lever and at its other end tothe stem of the valve 25. The valve 25 is open so long as the valve 2G is closed but through the connection above described closes as soon an the `valve 26 opens. The valve l8.is open while the fioat 13 is irm'ts lower-most position ed by means of its connections when the sa id tina-t 13 rises. l
From the foregoing description of the arrangement of parts it is obvious that should the quantity of water Within the boiler become excessive and thereby prev vent the speedy conversion into steam the water will water supply pipe 20.` The p ipe' and closes the valve 25.
in the cylinder 11 the float 13 will be elevated which will swing the shait 16 and move the rod 17 longitudinally which will turn the valve 18 and cut ofi the steam through the pipe 23 to the pump 19. Thus the said pump will cease operating and the supply of water to the boiler will be cut ofi and will remain cut off until the water in the boiler is converted into steam to such an extent as to permit the float 13 to fall when the operation last above described is reversed and the pump 19 will begin to supply' water to the boiler as above del scribed. When the steaml pressure within the boiler becomes excessive the steam escapes from the pipe 22' through the valve 2,6 and enters the cylinder 27. The piston 28 -is moved longitudinally oi the cylinder and through the piston rod 29 the lever 30 is swung upon its fulcrum which in turn moves the rod 31 longitudinally Thus the steam is cut-o ii from the pump 19 and it ceases operating and remains in av state of inactivity until the steam pressure has been reduced in the boiler and pipe 22.
Whenit is desired to cut any particular unit out of the circuit, or repair or otherpurposes, the valve l0 in the pipe-9 located between the section 7 of the unit to be cut o'ut. and the section 7 of the next adjacent unit is opened and the valve 8 at the end'oi the section nearest the coil 6 of the unit to be cut out is closed. Thus the said unit is cut out oi the circuit while the water or steam, as the case may bey willvpassy along a portion of thesection -7 and through the pipe 9 into the adjacent unit and then throughout the remaining units. For instance if it is desired to cut the unit-b out of the circuit;L
I of the series of units, the valveS, at the upperfend of the pipe section 62 connecting with the unit b is closed and the valve 10 on the pipe 9 which is between Lne pipes 7, 7 which are connected with units a and b, is opened. The valve 8 at the upper end of the pipe section 6 which connects with the unit b is closed. Thus both ends of the unit b are closed by the valves 8. 8 and the fluid passes from the unit o to unit. c. through pipe 9 and the opened valve 10. Thus the pipe 9 serves as a bypath between the several units and is normally closed at points between the several units.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:-
l. In a boiler, a unit consisting of a coil lying in a plane, a transverse section lying,r parallel with the pinne of the coil and :i connecting section at a richt angle to the plane of the coil and the transverse section.
2. A boiler comprising a series of units cach consistim: of a coil lying in a plano, said coils being arranged one above the other and sections leading from each unlt :ind passim,r over the same and conneciim,Y with the next lower unit. l
3. A boiler consisting: of a series of units arranged one above the other, connections between the units which extend transversely and lie in a plane above all of the units,
circuit.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing; as my own, I have heretoL uilixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
