Letters Patent No. 86,725, dated February 9, 1869.

IMPROVE!) U'IERINE SUPPORTER The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and mak-ing part of the same.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RYCKMAN D. BoGnRT, of Nanuet, Rockland county, New York, have invented a new and improved Uterine Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac# companying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved method of supporting the uterus, or a remedy for the falling of the womb and It consists in providing an apparatus for that purpose, which shall be supported from the hips of the female, constructed and arranged or applied in the manner hereinafter described.

Figure l represents the instrument as applied to the body.

Figures 3 and 4 represent supporting-rings, of different forms, shown in section, which are attached to the rod (iig. 2) at different times, as circumstances may require.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A is a piece of leather, or any other flexible material, covered with linen, silk, or' any other sitable Ina-- B is a metallic'wire or metallic curved rod, which is attached to A, so as 'to be adjustable thereon, by means of screw-nuts d c, which are rigidly attached thereto, with which the rod engages, so that it may be raised or lowered, in adjusting the supporter to the uterus, as may be required.

The other end of the'rod B is provided with a screwthread and nut, 0,-turned or curved to any desired angle, so as to properly lit the parts when the supporter is adjusted tothe patient.

F is a tube, or sleeve, which is placed ou the part B' of thce curved wire, which is adjusted thereon by the nut F G is a U-shaped fork, which is attached to the sleeve and H is a ring, which is attached to the fork G by the projecting ends of the fork, one of which ends is seen in iig. 3 at fi, which enter holes in the inside of the rings,

the fork being suiciently elastic to allow them to enter the holes, and thus hold the ring.V Both of the rings are heldin a similar manner.

Then the ring (iig. 4) is thus attached to the fork, and the sleeve, with the fork, is placed on the curved rod at B', it forms a supporter, and is introduced into the vagina, so that the neck of the uterus will enter the ring, and the uterus be supported on the ring, while it'is held in position bythe curved Wire or rod B', suspended from the hips by the apron A, as before mentioned.

,It is not uncommon for the uterus to become displaced from its true position, besides having a tendency to .fall, so that it creates undue pressure upon the adjacent organs, rectum and bladder, occasioning thereby a constant inclination to urinate or go to stool.

As a remedy for this, I make a ring of different form, as seen in iig. 3, marked L.. This ring is made of oval form, and bent so that one side projects upward, as seen in the drawing, on one side of the uterus, thus separating and supporting it from the adjacent organs. For

thus supporting the ring L, an additional single fork is employed, attached to the ring and to thesleeve F in the manner heretofore described, thus forming a triangular support to that ring, for the purpose of more securely keeping itin place.

The sleeve, forks, and rings may be made of noncorrosive metal, or of vulcanite, or gutta-percha, or any other suitable material.

Having thus described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The uterine supporter, suspended from an apron attached to the waist of the patient, substantially in the manner described. i

2. Thc-supporting-ring L, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The forks G and M, the sleeve F, and kcurved rod B B', when arranged and applied in combination with the rings H and L, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. p
