The invention has for its objects to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character wherein the mold walls may be readily moved to or from casting position, one in which the mold may be conveniently removed from the completed block, and this without injuring the latter, and one in which the cores will be rmly and securely retained in position on the base or pallet during the formation of the block and be quickly released at the completion of the casting operation, the initial step in the action of releasing the cores serving to positively move the same out of the cast block.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a mold embodying the invention, showing the parts in casting position and a completed block within the mold. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken centrally and longitudinally through the mold on the line 2-2 ofA Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1, and showingin dotted lines the manner of removing the mold from the block. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the pivoting members or links. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lock plate.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the mold, which rests on a base plate or pallet 1, comprises a` front wall 2, end walls 3, and a rear side wall 4, there being formed on the upper edges of the wall outturned portions or flanges 5 conjointly forming a iaring mouth through the medium of which the materialv may be readily introduced into the mold, while arranged on the base or pallet 1 is a lock member or strip 6 made of metal and provided at points adjacent its ends with depending internally threaded tubular thimbles 7 designed to seat and fit tightly within openings 8 formed through the base plate 1.
The mold is mounted in a frame 9 preferably composed of metal tubing and of open rectangular form, as shown, comprising longitudinal side bars or rails 10-11 and end bars or rails 12 terminally joined to the rails 10-11 by means of coupling members or elbows 13 have ing at their inner sides horizontal webs 14 perforated to receive vertical end posts 15 secured in place in the frame bymeans of nuts 1G tapped on to their upper ends and resting at their lower ends on the base 1.
The front wall 2 of the mold is ixedly attached to the front rails 10 by means of rivets or other attaching members 17, while the end walls 3 and rear wall 4 are movably supported in the frame through the medium of connecting arms or links 18 pivoted at their outer ends by means of pintles 19 to ears 20 formed on clips 21 suitably fixed on the frame members 11-12 and are pivoted at their inner ends by means of pintles 22 to bracket plates 23, riveted or otherwise secured to the mold walls, it being noted that there are employed a plurality of connecting links which are identical in form and are disposed at appropriately spaced intervals and further, that the movable walls will, when carried to inactive position, be moved upwardly and outwardly through the medium of the links 18 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
Arranged in the mold and `for forming transverse air openings through the block 24, is a pair of tubular metal cores 25 of gradually diminishing taper from their upper to their lower ends and preferably of rectangular form in cross section, as shown, there being xed in each of the cores and respectively adjacent its ends a pair of horizontal transverse bracing pieces or straps 26, suitably perforated to receive a central longitudinal 1'0- tary locking member or rod 27 having at its upper end a hand-piece 28, and terminating at its lower end in an enlarged, externally threaded engaging porti on or head 29, adapted to be screwed into one of the thimbles 7 and to bear at its upper end against the lower strap 26, while fixed on the. rod 27 and to bear on the upper bracing strap 2G, is a collar 30 which, together with the head 29, secures the rod against longitudinal movement relative to the core. In practice, the frame 9 carrying the mold, is properly positioned on the base-plate or pallet 1, and with the mold walls arranged in casting position, as in Figs. 1 and 2, after which the cores 25 are fiXedly arranged in the mold by entering the engaging portions 29 of the locking rods into the thimbles 7, in which operation the end-pieces 28 are grasped and the rods suitably rotated. After the mold and cores have been properly positioned the mold is filled with plastic material for forming the block 24, and after the material has set, the cores are released from the pallet 1 for removal by rotating the rods 27 to disengage the heads 29 from the lock-plate 6, it being noted in this connection that in the operation of releasing-*the cores and, owing to the rods 27 being held against longitudinal Amovement relative to the cores, the latter will be positively moved upward a suficient distance to wholly free them from the block,
after which they may be readily lifted out of the mold, and this Without injuring the block. The cores having been removed, the mold walls 3 and 4 are moved to iuactive position for releasing the block by swinging the arms 18 upward on their pivots 19, whereby an upward and outward movement is imparted to the walls, thus carrying them away from and without injury to the adjacent faces of the block. After the Walls 3 and 4 have reached the limit of their outward movement, the frame 9 is tilted bodily forward, as seen by dotted lines in Fig. 3, thus moving the wall 2 away from the front face of the block, which is thus wholly freed from the mold and remains standing on the pallet l for removal to the drying shed. It is to be particularly observed that the mold walls may be conveniently arranged incasting or non-casting position and that in the operation of releasing the completed block, the walls will be moved diagonally away from the faces of the latter, whereby marring of the block is obviated.
Having` thus described the invention, what. I claim iszl l. In a device of the class described, a frame, a mold disposed therein comprising side. and end walls, one of said walls being fixed to the trame and the others movably arranged therein, a pallet on which the mold rests, and means connecting the movable walls to the frame for upward and outward swinging movement to inactive position. the mold being adapted after the movable walls have been moved to-inactive position, to tip bodily forward for discharging the block.
2. In a device of the class described, a frame, a mold arranged therein and comprising side and end walls, 011e of said walls being xed to the frame and the others being movably sustained therein` connecting arms pivotcd in the frame and to the movable walls for carrying the latter, and a pallet on which the mold res the movable wallsl beingadapted to swing upward and outward to inactive position and the mold arranged to dip bodily t'orward in discharging the block.
