To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ KRATZER, a citizen of Germany. residing at Bad Tolz, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction-Brake-Setting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in brakes, having for its special object the fixing of the brake in a position at rest or in any applied position and also providing against looseness by Wear.
The invention as hereinafter more fully described and as particularly set out in the claims, will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred embodiment of the same is shown.
In these drawings: Figure l is a side view with certain portions removed; Fig. 2 is an edge view; Fig. 3 is an edge view with certain parts removed, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of certain parts.
Upon an appropriate part of the vehicle the bolt 11 is fixed, which bolt is provided with a groove or depression a and with an inclined shoulder a. A left-hand thread is formed on the bolt and serves to receive a correspondingly threaded hand lever b, the nave b of which is concentric with the bolt. A ring 0 loosely embracing the bolt (1 bears with a concave face against the inclined shoulder a and is connected with the nave b of the hand lever b by the stud 0 so as to rotate therewith but to move freely relative thereto in an axial direction. The inner opposing faces of the nave b and the ring 0 are cut away to form inclined faces (1 and d having a pitch slightly in excess of that of the thread upon the bolt.
Mounted concentrically with the bolt "a is the nave e of the draft lever e, which has inclined oppositelydisposed-faces 6, forming a wedge the sidesof which correspond to and engage with the inclined faces d d. To the draft lever e is secured the brake rod 6 as is usual. A spring catch f is mounted in a concentric recess of the nave b and projects inwardly therethrough into engagement with the groove a formed in the bolt a. This catch serves in a position of rest to hold the device against involuntary movement.
If it is desired to set the device in operation the hand lever b is moved forward in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, the catch f being withdrawn from the groove (1 and the nave b to some extent unscrewed from the bolt a. This movement serves to release the ring 0 and the nave e from lateral pressure, allowing" of play between the ring 0 and the shoulder a At this time the draft lever e, being opposed to the resistance of the brake, remains behind the hand lever b temporarily, whereupon the inclined faces e contact with the inclined faces d d, and the pitch of these inclined faces being greater than that of the left-hand thread, great pressure is exerted laterally pressing the concave face of the ring 0 against the inclined shoulder a, and in consequence of the great friction engendered between the inclined faces, the draft lever e is drawn forward and the brake locked in position.
An improved feature of the invention is the fact that the left-hand thread of the bolt a, while being squareshouldered on the inner side, is inclined or beveled on the outside, that is, toward the outer end of the bolt a, whereby notwithstanding the wear incident to continued use, there is secured a close fit between the bolt and the nave b and the brake is accurately fixed in a position of rest or inany desired braking position.
Upon a reverse movement of the hand lever b the inclined faces d d and 6 are retracted, the nave b being screwed further into position on the bolt a and by the cessation of friction between the parts I) and c the brake is again released.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a brake, a fixed threaded bolt, a lever threaded on the bolt and having a lateral face of its nave inclined, a ring loosely mounted on the bolt with an inclined face 0pposed to that of the lever, a second lever provided with a wedge-shaped nave in juxtaposition to the inclined sides of the first lever and ring, and a connection between the second lever and the brake rod.
2. In a brake, a fixed bolt provided with a beveled thread, a'lever threaded on the bolt and having a lateral face of its nave inclined, a ring loosely mounted on-the bolt with an inclined face opposed to that of the lever, a connection between the lever and ring, a second lever pivoted on the bolt and provided with a wedge-shaped nave in juxtaposition to the inclined sides of the first lever and ring, a connection between the second lever and the brake rod, and a catch forming an engagementhetween the first lever and the bolt.
3. In a brake, a fixed bolt provided with a beveled thread and with an inclined shoulder, a lever threaded on the bolt and having a lateral face of its nave inclined, a ring loosely mounted on the bolt with a concave face opposed to the shoulder and an inclined face opposed to that of the lever, a connection between the lever and ring, a
second lever pivoted on the bolt and provided with a wedgeshaped nave in juxtaposition to the inclined sides of the first lever and ring, the pitch of the inclined faces and Wedge being greater than that of the thread of the bolt, and a connection between the second lever and the brake rod. V p
4. In a brake, a fixed bolt provided with a beveled thread and with an inclined shoulder, a lever threaded on the bolt and having a lateral face of its nave inclined, a ring loosely mounted on the bolt with a concave face opposed to the shoulder and an inclined face opposed to that of the lever, a connection between the lever and ring, a second lever pivoted on the bolt and provided with a Wedge-shaped nave in juxtaposition to the inclined sides of the first lever and ring, the pitch of the inclined faces and wedge being greater than that of the thread of the bolt, a connection between the second lever and the brake rod, and a spring catch forming an engagement between the first lever and bolt.
5. In a brake, a fixed bolt provided with an inclined shoulder and with a thread and having its outer edge beveled, a lever threaded on the bolt and having a lateral face of its nave inclined, a ring loosely mounted on the bolt with a concave face opposed to the shoulder and an inclined face opposed to that of the lever, a connection between the lever and ring, a second lever pivoted on the bolt and provided with a wedge-shaped nave in juxtaposition to the inclined sides of the first lever and ring, the
pitch of the inclined faces and wedge being greater than that of the thread of the bolt, a connection between the second lever and the brake rod, and a catch forming an en gagement between the first lever and bolt.
6. In a brake, a fixed bolt: provided with an inclined shoulder and with a left-hand thread beveled on its outer side, a lever threaded on the bolt and having a lateral face of its nave inclined, a ring,- loosely mounted on the bolt with a concave face opposed to the shoulder and an inclined face opposed to that of the lever, a connection between the lever and ring, a second lever pivoted on the bolt and provided with a wedge-shaped nave in jnxtaposi tion to the inclined faces of the first lever and ring, the pitch of the inclined faces and wedge being greater than that of the thread of the bolt, :1 connection between the second lever and the brake rod, and :1 spring catch arranged in the nave of the first lever and forming an engagement between the first lever and the bolt.
