To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LEGER MARCHAND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rolla, county of Rolette, in the State of North Dakota, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleigh-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to sleighs; the object of my invention is to provide an efficientbraking mechanism for a sleigh to prevent its backward movement when a backward pull is made on the draft member of the sleigh; a further object of my invention is to provide means for locking the braking mechanism in inoperative position, so that the sleigh may be backed; a further object is to provide a mechanism adapted to be placed on one or more sleighs and operated on all of the sleighs at the same time; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In-the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of'my invention, .in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; Fig. 3 is .a vertical section on line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, the movable parts being shown in a different position to that illustrated in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line 44 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates runners connected by a cross bar 2, of ordinary construction. Disposed between the forward ends of the runners 1, is a cross bar 3, to which may be secured any' suitable form of draft attaching means, such as a pole 4. Disposed through the cross bar 3, and having its ends projecting therefrom, is a cross rod 5, its opposite ends being slidably disposed in the slots 6 provided adjacent the forward ends of the runners 1. When a forward pull is given to the pole 4, it is evident that the ends of the cross rod will bear against the forward walls of the slots 6, and the sleigh will be drawn forward. Pivotally connected to the cross rod 5, and surrounding the forward ends of the runners 1, are collars 7, which, when they are in the position shown in Fig. 2, are adapted to contact with the extreme forward edges of the runners and prevent rearward movement of the cross bar 5, and when they are not in contact with the runners, said collars are adapted to form guides for the forward ends of the braking members hereinafter described, and the ends of the cross rod 5.
Secured adjacent the ends of the rod 5 are rearwardly extending brake rodsS, having a bent portion 9 adjacent their rear ends, and having the beveled or pointed ends 10, adapted to enter the surface on which the sleigh is drawn. 7
Disposed adjacent the path of movement of the bent portions 9, and surrounding said bent portions, are guides 11, which may be attached to the vertical faces of the runners in any suitable way. The collars 7 being released from the front ends of the runners 1, a backward pull on the draft member-4 will force the brake rods 8 backward to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that the pointed ends 10 will enter the surface on which the sleigh rests, and thereby prevent backward movement of the sleigh.
Secured to the cross bar 3 is a rod 12, provided intermediate of its end with a yoke 13, through which yoke is disposed the headed pin 14, secured to the cross bar 2, and adapted to guide the movement of the rod 12 when the cross bar 3 is moved backward or forward by the draft attaching member 4.
Secured to the rear end of the rod 12 is a rod 15, adapted to be attached to a draft sleigh equipped with a mechanism similar to that already described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with a sleigh, a brake therefor comprising a cross bar, a cross rod attached thereto, brake rods pivotally connected with said cross rod, slots in the sleigh runners adapted to movably receive said cross rod,
gripping beveled ends on the aforesaid brake rods adapted to engage the ground surface and brake the sleigh, guides on said sleigh adapted to receive and guide the beveled ends of saidfbrake rods into operative position, collars or links pivotally connected to the aforesaid cross rod, and adapted to overlie the end of the sleigh runner and engage the same to therebylock the cross rod and through it the brake rod in inoperative position.
2. In combination with a sleigh, a brake therefor comprising a cross bar, a cross head attached thereto, sleigh runners, inclined parallel slots in said runnersv adapted to loosely receive and guide the aforesaid cross rod, brake rods pivotally connected to said cross rod, bevel points on said brake rods adapted to engage the ground surface and brake the sleigh, guides on the sleigh, runners adapted to loosely receive and guide said bevel points into engagement with said surface, and collars or links pivotally connected to the aforesaid cross rod adapted to overlie the ends of the said runners and engage therewith to thereby hold the aforesaid cross rod, and through it the brake rod 7 rod, bent portions on said brake rods terminating in bev eled points adapted to engage the ground surface and thereby brake the sleigh, guides attached to said runners and adapted to receive and guide into operative position said bevel points, and collars or links pivotally connected to the aforesaid cross rod and adapted either to overlie or engage the end of said runner to thereby hold the aforesaid cross rod and through it the brake rods in inoperative position, or to he disengaged from the end of said runner 10 and thrown into inoperative position to thereby allow the aforesaid brake rods to be moved longitudinally of the aforesaid inclined slots, whereby said brake rods may be lowered to allow the aforesaid bevel points to engage the ground surface and thereby brake the sleigh.
