Be it known that 1, JOHN N. AKARMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Pole or Evener Couplers for Horse-Oars, and that the same are fully describedin the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic pole or evener couplers for horsecars; and has for its object to provide means whereby the pole or eveners may be attached to the car with as little labor as possible by introducing the eye of the pole into a forked drawbar provided with mechanism which withdraws the pin or bolt and replaces it automatically, and this my invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, on whieh- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the drawbar and rear end of the pole used in my improved coupler shown as being disconnected. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same in the act of being coupled together, and Fig. 3 represents a central longitudinal section of" the same after they have been coupled together.
Similar letters refer to similar parts on the a represents the draw-bar of the car A,which is forked in its forward end to receive the 'eye I) of the pole or evener b, and provided with the downward-projecting bracket a, as usual, to serve as a bearing, against which the forked end 0 of the downward'projecting bearing 0 on the under side of the pole or evener b rests and is pivoted,as usual.
To the ears a a on the upper forward part of the forked draw-bar a is fulcrumed, at d, the rock-lever d, and to one arm of the lever d is hung the pin or bolt 6 by means of the bolt or rivet e. The pin 6 passes through the perforations a a in the upper and lower parts of the forked draw-bar. The eye I) of the pole or evener b is provided with a hole or perforation, b, through which the pin 6 passes when the pole is attached to the draw-bar, as shown in Fig. 3, and said eye is also provided with a shoe or projection, b which strikes against the downward-projecting arm d of the lever (1 when the pole is in the act of bethe hole I) in the eye of the pole comes directly below the pin e, when said pin is allowed to drop by the projection 6 passing by the extreme end of the projecting arm d of the lever d. The space between the ears a a is made of such a shape and size as to form a stop, a, to limit the motion of the lever d, so as to prevent the pin 0 from being drawn entirely from the hole a in the upper part of the fork of the draw-bar, thereby insuring the proper guidance of the pin e, when it is allowed to drop, as heretofore described. The eye I) of the pole is provided with a groove, 11*, on its upper side, which serves, in connection with the end of the arm (1 and the end of the pin 0, as a guide for the eye of the pole while it is being inserted into the fork of the draw-bar, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to cause the hole I) in the eye of the pole to come directly below the pin 0, when the projection b passes beyond the end of the arm at and allows the pin 6 drop.
To the end of the arm of theleverdto which the pin e is pivoted, is attached a chain,rod,or rope, f, which may be attached tothe upper end of the dasher of the car. (Not shown on the drawings.) This allows the driver to disconnect the pole by simply pulling on the chain f,which causes thelever (l to turn on its fulcrum d, withdrawing the pin 0 sufficiently to allow the eye I) of the pole b to be withdrawn from the draw-bar. The pin 0 is prevented from being entirely withdrawn from the hole a in the upper part of the fork of the draw-bar by the end of the arm (1 coming in contact with the stop (4*, as described.
The groove b on the upper part of the eye of the pole may be dispensed with, and the projection b on said eye carried entirely around the hole I), or said projection be only on the eye in front of the hole I), ifso desired, without departing from the spirt of my invention; butI prefer to make it as shown.
It will be seen that to attach the pole or eveners b to the draw-bar a of a horse-car the driver has only to guide the pole so that the arm (1 will enter the groove 1), and to back his horses until the projection b has caused the pin 6 to be withdrawn and dropped into the hole I) in the eye of thepoleb, as described.
To disconnect the pole, the driver simply pulls the chainf, thus Withdrawing the pin, when the pole may be withdrawn from the draw-bar with ease.
By this my improved coupling the pin is always in the draw-bar, which prevents it from scarring the paint on the dasher by swinging and hitting against the same, and it also prevents the disagreeable rattle caused by the same. i
The chainf maybe dispensed with, and the lever d provided with a handle, in which case the driver will be obliged to go behind his horses on theground and withdraw the pin 0 by raising the handle on the lever.
Having thus fully described the nature. construction, and operation of my invention, I claim- 1. In an automatic pole or cvener coupler for horse-cars, the forked draw-bar a, the lever (1, pivoted to the said draw-bar, and having the arm d, as described, the pin 0, pivoted to said lcverand arranged to pass through the holes a a in the drawbar, in combination with the eye I) I) of the pole l), and the projection Z) on said eye to act on the arm (1 of the lever d, all as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an automatic pole or evener coupler for horse-cars, the forked draw-bar a, the lever d, pivoted to the said draw-bar, and having the arm d, as described, the pin e, pivoted to said lever and arranged to pass through the holes a a in the draw-bar, in combina tion with the eye I) b of the pole Z), the groove 1) on said eye, and the projection b on said eye to act on the arm (1 of the lever d, all as and for the purpose set forth and described.
3. In an automatic pole or evener coupler for horsecars, the forked draw-bar a, the lever (2, pivoted to said draw bar and the pin 6, pivoted to said lever and passing through holes in the draw-bar in combination with the stop a on said draw-bar, for the purpose set forth.
4. In an automatic pole or evener coupler for horse-ears. the forked draw-bar a, the lever (7, pivoted to said drawbar, and the pin 0. pivoted to said lever and arranged to pass through holes in said draw-bar, in combination with the chain, rod, or cord f, for disconnecting the pole or evener from the draw-bar, as set forth.
