Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILFRID PELTIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concordia, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Gate Opener and Closer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swinging gates and means for opening and closing the same.
The object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to Within the scope oi the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a swinging gate constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same in closed position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same showing in dotted lines the gate in open position. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the latch supporting post.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved gate forming the subject matter of the present invention is pivotally mounted for swinging movement between spaced posts 5 and 6 disposed on opposite sides of a road way so that when the gate is moved to closed position it will form a transverse barrier across said road way.
The gate consists of a substantially rectangular frame preferably formed of a single piece of tubing, metal or other suitable material bent to form parallel upper and lower members 6 and 7 connected by vertically disposed end members 8 and 9, the rear end of the lower member 7 being bent to form a terminal eye 10 for the reception of the adjacent end of the vertical member 9.
Secured to the lower member 7 of the gate is a flat strip of metal 11 which extends beneath the eye 10 and is bent or otherwise coiled around said member so as to form a support for the pivot rod 12.
Secured to the upper portion of the vertical member 9 of the gate is a metal strap 13 which forms a support for the upperportion of the pivot rod 12, said strap being coiled around or otherwise rigidly secured to the vertical member 9, as indicated at 14.
The straps 11 and 13 are of different lengths and provided with perforations for the reception of the pivot rod 12, said rod being extended through an eye or loop 15 secured to the adjacent post 5 and having its lower end engaging a weighted actuating member or wheel 16.
The actuating member or wheel 16 encircles the gate post 5 and is mounted for rotation beneath the gate, said wheel being provided with a weighted portion consisting of a fiat piece of metal having its intermediate portion bent around the periphery of the wheel 16 and its free ends spaced apart to form inwardly extending supporting arms 17 and 18 having openings formed therein for the reception of the pivot pins or studs 19.
The weighted member is reinforced and strength ened by the provision of inclined arms 20 which also encircle the periphery of the actuating member or wheel 16 and are preferably formed integral with the arms 17 and 18, as shown.
The upper arm 17 is provided with one or more openings 21 adapted to receive the lower end of the pivot rod 12 so that said rod may be supported at an angle or inclination to the adjacent gate post 5.
As a means for. rotating the actuating member or wheel 16 there are provided suitable actuating cords 22 and 23 having their inner ends secured tothe periphery of the wheel 16 and their free ends extended through suitable eyes or .loops 24 and provided with terminal operating handles so that by exerting a quick longitudinal pull on the cables the actuating member or wheel may be partially rotated to effect the opening and closing of the gate from either side of the road-way, the momentum of the wheel serving to carry the same past dead center.
The rotary movement of the actuating member 01 wheel 16 is limited by suitable pegs or stop pins 25 and 26 preferably driven in the ground on each side of the gate post 5- and adapted to engage the weighted portion of the wheel when the latter is rotated.
in the present instance is shown formed of vertical and longitudinal wire strands 27 and 28 reinforced by one or more diagonal braces 29.
When the gate is in closed position the weighted portion of the actuating member is in engagement with the stop 25. In order to open the gate the oper atorexerts a quick longitudinal pull on the operating cord 22 which partially rotates the wheel and causes the weighted portion thereof to engage the stop pin 26.
As the wheel is rotated in the direction of the stop pin 26 the lower end-of the pivot rod 12 will be shifted to one side of the longitudinal axis of the gate post 5 so as to lift the free end of the gate out of engagement with the spring actuated keeper 30, a further movement of the wheel causing the gate to swing laterally to open position, as will be readily understood.
By exerting a longitudinal pull on the cable 23 the actuating wheel may be rotated in the reverse direction so as to effect the closing of the gate.
From the foregoing description it is thought that The gate may be of any approved construction but the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood by those skilled in the art and further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
i. The combination with spaced gate posts, of a gate pivotally mounted for swinging movement between the posts, a rotary actuating member encircling the hinge post beneath the gate and operatively connected with the hinge post and gate, respectively, and means for rotating the actuating member thereby to effect the opening and closing of the gate.
2. The combination with spaced gate posts, of a gate pivotally mounted for swinging movement between the posts, a rotary actuating member encircling the hinge post beneath the gate and operatively connected with the hinge post and gate, respectively, a pivot rod engaging thelgate and actuating member and disposed at an angle to the adjacent gate post, and means for rotating the actuating member thereby to effect the opening and closing of the gate.
3. The combination with spaced gate posts, of a gate pivotally mounted for swinging movement between the posts, a rotary actuating member encircling the hinge post beneath the gate and provided with spaced inwardly extending arms having a pivotal connection with the adjacent gate post, a rod forming a pivotal connection between the gate and adjacent gate post and engaging one of the arms of the actuating member, and means for rotating the actuating member thereby to effect the opening and closing of the gate.
4. The combination with spaced gate posts, of a gate pivotally connected with one of said posts, an actuating member mounted for rotation beneath said gate and provided with spaced inwardly extending arms having a pivotal connection with the gate post, straps extending longitudinally from the pivoted end of the gate and provided with perforations, an eye extending laterally from the hinge post, a rod extending through the eye and the perforations in the gate straps and engaging one of the arms of the actuating member, said rod being disposed at an angle to the adjacent gate post, and means for op erating the actuating member thereby to effect the opening and closing of the gate.
5. The combination with spaced gate posts one of which is provided with a keeper, a gate pivotally mounted for swinging movement on one of the gate posts and adapted to engage the keeper, lugs extending laterally from the lower portion of said gate post, a wheel mounted for retation beneath the gate and provided with spaced in wardly extending arms having perforations formed therein for the reception of the lugs, a rod forming a pivotal connection between the gate and the adjacent gate post and having its lower end bearing in the upper arm of the wheel, and means secured to the wheel for rotating the latter thereby to effect the opening and closing of the gate.
6. The combination with spaced gate posts, of a gate pivoted to one of the posts, a wheel mounted for rotation beneath the gate at one of said posts, spaced arms extending inwardly from the periphery of the wheel and operatively connected with the lower .end of the adjacent post, one of said arms being provided with a plurality of spaced perforations, a rod forming a pivotal "connection between the gate and the adjacent post and having its lower end disposed at an angle to said gate post and seated in one of the openings in the upper arm of the wheel, and means secured to the wheel for rotating the latter thereby to effect the opening and closing of the gate.
7. The combination with spaced posts, of a gate includ ing a substantially rectangular frame having one end thereof formed with a terminal eye for the reception of the opposite end of the frame, a metal strap extending beneath the eye at the lower end of said gate frame and having its inner end coiled around the frame, a metal strap secured to the upper portion of the gate frame and also coiled around said'frame, said straps being provided with perforations, an eye extending laterally from the adjacent gate post, a weighted actuating member mounted for rotation on the lower portion of the gate post and provided with inwardly extending arms one of which is formed with a plurality of spaced openings, a pivot rod extending through the eye post and perforations in the straps and having its lower end seated in one of the openings in the arms of the actuating member, and operating cables secured to the actuating member for rotating the latter thereby to effect the opening and closing of the gate.
