Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed June 4, 1906. Serial No. 320,096.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRED RIVEIT, a British sub ject, and a resident of Heaton Chapel, county of Lancaster, England, and SAMUEL OLDHAM, a British sub feet, and a resident of Heaton Norris, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Gassing Yarn or Thread, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for gassing yarn or thread by means of a gas jet or flame for the purpose of removing fine fibers or fluff standing off or projecting from the surface thereof.
This invention relates more particularly to machines in which the yarn is treated vertically in a partially closed chamber. It is designed to'provide means for withdrawing or holding the yarn or thread out of the chamber and away from the flame after piecing or at any other time when the yarn or thread is stationary.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1. is an end elevation partly in section of a gassing frame shown with the invention applied thereto. Figs. 2. and 3 transverse sections showing modifications.
The burners A are mounted upon tubes or pipes 0 running longitudinally of the machine and over or around each burner is mounted a vertical tube B forming a chamber partially closed, up which the flame from the burner projects and through which the yarn or thread D is passed in a vertical or approximately vertical direction through the flame during the process of gassing. The tube B is formed with a slot extending longitudinally throughout its length.
Above the tubular chamber is mounted a guide eye E to direct the thread or yarn D through the chamber or tube B and from it to the winding drum D.
The guide eye is carried at the end of a lever F pivoted upon a vertical rod G by which it is connected with the stop lever H of the winding drum D.
The balanced lever F which carries the guide eye E is so balanced or adjusted that in normal position the guide eye E is directly above the chamber B or nearly so to direct the yarn or thread therethrough without touching it. When however the lever F falls or is drawn down the guide eye is carried some distance in advance or to the front of the chamber B and the yarn or thread is carried outside the chamber and away from the gas flame therein.
The guide eye E is adjustably connected by a short rod 6 with the lever F and the lever is pivoted upon the upper end of a vertical or other connecting rod G the connecting rod at its other end being pivoted upon a lever or operating handle H pivoted to the frame K or beam of the machine and brought out beside the winding drum where it is held in normal position by a small pivoted catch it or otherwise.
A guide arm or wire M may be pivoted behind the drum D to raise the yarn out of the slit in the drum. This is pivoted close to the rod G,and is operated thereby by the collars m placed on the rod (see Fig. 2.)
A brake plate M is attached to or connected with the operating handle to pass between the winding drum and the cheese or roll of yarn to stop the latter when the yarn or thread is withdrawn from the gassing chamber.
When it is desired to Withdraw the thread D from the gassing chamber B or to draw the guide eye forward for piecing purposes to hold the yarn or thread out of the flame and withdraw it from the chamber B the catch h of the operating handle is released and the handle dropped when the guide eye E falls or travels forward. On moving the handle back to its normal or operative positionthe guide eye is swung up or back again and the yarn or thread inserted in the gassing chamber, through the longitudinal slot therein.
What we claim as our invention and. desire to pro tect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gassing frame for yarn or thread the combination with the burner A, vertical chamber B surrounding the burner, stop lever H, and winding drum D, of a guide eye E placed above the burner, a pivoted rod F to which the guide eye is afiixed and a connecting rod G by which the guide .eye is connected with the stop lever substantially as described.
2. In a gassing frame the combination with the burner A, stop lever H, and winding drum D, of a guide eye pivoted above the burner, means for connecting the guide eye with the stop lever and a lever M, also connected with the stop lever H, by which the yarn is removed from the drum at the same time as it is removed from the burner substantially as described.
