OF SIDNEY, OHIO.
STE AM-B OILER.
le it known that l, SAMUEL S. Davis, a citizen ol the United' States, residing at Sidney, in the county ol Shelby and (State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Steannlloiler, of which the following is a specification.
'This invention relate.- to the construction of that class of ste-ani boilers knotvn as flashers; wherein small quantities oi water are sprayed against heated metallic surfaces and instantly converted into steam.
The principal object of 'the invention is to provide a flasher in which the steam may be kept' thoroughly dry and may be superheated, il necessary, to the point of deconiposiiimi, so as to forni a dry gas.
A iurlher'object of the invention is to provide a boiler in which no water whatever will be retained within the boiler, so that the heat may be utilized'ior the purpose ol raising the niet-al of the boiler to a high temperature.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pluru. ity o banks of flash tubes into which small quantities of water are sprayed alternately, the steam thus ormedbeing conducted through auxiliary tubes for the purpose o superheating and drying the same. I
A still further object of the invention is to provide novel means for feeding or forcing small quantities of water, together with air under pressure, alternately into the banks of tubes, the air' serving in part as a means for atomizing and finely dividingl the water.
`Witli these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in cervous changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departof the invention.
In 'the accompanying drawings:-Figure I is an elevation of a steam boiler constructed in accordance vwith the invention, the outer shell or casing being shown in section. Fig. 2 is -a transverse sectional elevation oi the same. Fig; 3 is a detail -plan view showing one of the sets of flashers and the connections. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation through one of the upper flasher tubes .staybolts 15 so arranged as to permit convenient open- Specication of Letters Patent.

ing of the casing when access is to be had to the interior thereof. i
At the bottom of the casing is a suitable heating. means lll which may take the forni of vapor or gas burners or any other kind oi fuel may be used as desired.
'lhe flasher tubes are arranged in two banks, the lowerrnost bank 18 having tubes of a less number than the upper bank 19, and the tubes oi one bank are stag` gered with relation to those of the other, so that the products of combustion may pass between the tubes of the lower bank and iinpinge directl y against those oi the upper bank. of tubes 2O which are staggered with relation to 'the tubes 19, and are preferably of a number greater than the number ol tubes in either thebank 18 or the bank 19.
Arranged in front of the flasher tubes 1S and 19 are transversely extending feeder tubes 21 and 22, troni which extend spraying nipples 23, these passing through suitable stulling boxes 24 which fit within openings formed in hollow plugs 25 that are welded in` the front ends ol the flasher tubes. The nipples may be o any desired construction, but preferably are provided with minute openings at their inner ends, through which interiningled volumes of air and water are directed, the water being atornii/.ed or finely di-l vided, and directed into Contact with the heated walls of the tubes where it'instantly flashes into steam.
' The rear ends of the flasher tubes are provided with welded plugs 26 from which project nipples 27 that are connected to horizontally disposed pipes 29. Each of these tubes is closed at one end by a plug 31, and at the opposite end is connected to a. vertically disposed tube 32, the latter being provided at its lower end with a blow ofi cock 33, and at its upper end with a safety -valye 345 of any ordinary construction. A
Connected to the vertical tube 32 is a third horizontal tube ,36'which is connected by short nipples 3,7 to the rear ends of the upper bank of-tubes 20, all of the steam formed in the lower flasher tubes 18 and 19 being conducted through the upper bank of tubes 20, and there partly dried and superheated. The front ends of the tubes 20 are connected to a transversely extending tube 38 which is connected to one end of, the lowermost of a series of connected banks of tubes 40, these tubes being of a size rnueh smaller than the Hasher tubes, and being connected in a continuous series, the steam entering one end of the lowermost bank and escaping from the opposite end of the toprnost bank and from there passing to the engine or other point. The smaller tubes extend completely across the upper portion of the combustion chamber, and the tubes of the different rows, being arranged in staggered relation, form barriers or ballles which will to some extent tend to retard the escape the products of combustion, so that the tubos may be Above the upper bank is a thirdset g Beerse@ very highly heated, and the steam from l he ilzuihera willA be dried and Superheated, the temperature being raised to any desired extent, sometimes to zi/point Where ytheV steam (leeoinposes into its; constituent elements and iorrus n very dry gee ouder high pressure.
