` Be it known that I, Mica/mr. WIL/lx1', a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of NewA York,.have invented .new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gas- Valves, of which 'the following is a specification:`
The invention relates to an improvement in automatic valve controllers, and particularly to an electrically-controlled meansfor operating the valve of, anordinary gas burner.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a device which may be readily applied to the ordinary gas fixture without material change andwhich. unay be utilizedas a means for turning on or off the gas from any determinate point remote from the fixture.
The preferred details of construction will be described in the following specification, reference being had tn the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring particularly to the drawings, my improved Fig. 1.4 Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view, illustrating' valve controller includes two-'sets of electro-"magnets plates. Each of the 'plates is 'formed with an opening to receive the supply" pipe 7 of a gas fixture, set screws 8 being provided in 4cach plate for cooperation wi- A the pipe to secure the segmental-plates in fixed rolation thereto. The rods 6 provide a means for supporting the relatively .forward magnet of each set, said magnets being cach provided with cncirclingbands 9 projecting above the magnet proper in the form o ears l0. centrally perforated to slidably embrace the respective rods. l The stem 12 ofthe usual gascock 13 is provided on its lower end with a pinion 14, and the core of weh of the forward magnets 3 is projected in the form of a nick-bar 15, the respective magnets being so spaced as to provide for engagementof therack bars with diametrically opposed teeth of the pinion 14', as clearly shown in Fig.
The magnets of each set'are energized through conductors 16 and 17 respectively, the former leading from a source of energy as a battery 18, and the latter terminating in contact'points 19. A manually oper; able switch 2O is also in circuit with the battery and adapted to engage either of the contact points 19` at i the will of the operator. Anf the relatively forward -magnet of each set is movably mounted, it is a once apparent thatenergizirig the magnetsof a particular set will cause the fixed magnet to attract the particularly movable magnet, the attraction beingaugmentcd b y the magnetic inuence of the movable' magnet. As the particular magnet 3 movesunder the influence described, the rack-liar 15 is likewise moved, with the effect to operate 'the gas cock 13 through movement oi the pinion 14.` As either set of magnets 1 or 2 may be energized at the willfof 4the operator, it is obvious that the valve may be moved to open or close the same, as'desired.
The attachment requires the addition of the pinion v 14 to the ordinary gas cock and the application of the device to the supply pipe immediately in rear of said gas cock, all other parts oi the .fixture remaining in their usual form. The device is thus readily applied to any of the ordinary gas cocks, as the addition of thc pinion 14 in place of the usual thumb-piece, is readily accomplished. v i' lt is, oi course, obvious that the controlling switch may be disposed at any point desired without regard to thelxlure so that the gas may be readily turned ou or off without necessitating the usual manual manipulation nl the gas cock.
