ELECTRlCALLY-OPERATED COCK AND IGNITING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,162, dated August 15, 1899.

To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL LOUIS GUYENoT, engineer, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at No. 90 Rue de Clery, Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented a certain new and useful Cock Capable of being Opened and Closed at a Distance by Electrical Means,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cock capable of being opened and closed at a distance by electrical means, such cock being suitable for fluids of all kinds, whether gaseous or liquid.
Inorder that my invention may be readily and clearly understood, I have represented the same, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, which show a method of carrying the said invention into effect in connection with its application to a gas-burner for the purpose of effecting the ignition and extinction of the burner at a distance therefrom.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the cock, properly so called, in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cock when closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the cock when the same is being opened. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same when open. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of a gas-burner adapted for being ignited and extinguished at a distance to which my improved cock has been applied, shown in the open position. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken upon the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of this cock in the open position, taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is an elevation of the cock. Fig. 9 is a vertical section through a portion of a modified form of cock. Fig. 10 is a plan view corresponding to that shown in Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a vertical section through the principal portion of another modified form of cock. Fig. 12 is aplan view corresponding to that shown in Fig. 11.
I will first of all describe the principle of my improved cock, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4. The said cock is constituted by a plug A, of conical, cylindrical, hemispherical, or similar form, resting in a seat of corresponding shape formed in a suitable part. Upon this seat open two passages B B, through which the fluid enters, and two passages a a are formed in the plug A, adapted to coincide therewith or not, according to the angle at which the plug of the cock is turned.
The plug A is attached to a rod C, of soft iron, arranged within a soft-iron tube 1). This rod C passes right through the plug A, and to its upper extremity is rigidly fixed a small arm 0, likewise of soft iron, the extremity of which lies between the poles c e of a permanent magnet E. At its upper por tion the soft-iron rod C terminates in a point which rests in a small cavity formed in the surface of a soft-iron plate F, hinged at f and capable of being applied against the extremity d of the soft-iron tube D. Around this latter (and at the same time around the parts adjacent thereto, if it cannot be arof the plug, is such that when the arm 0 is applied against one of the poles the passages a a of the plug, coincide with the orifices of the passages B B and that when the arm 0 is applied against the other pole such coincideuce no longer takes place, the cock being therefore open in the first case and closed in the second.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming the plug A to occupy the closed position, Figs. 1 and 2, the small arm 0 being applied against the pole e, for example, of the magnet E, if an electric circuit is closed through the coil G the iron tube D and likewise the rod with the arm 0 become magnetized. If this current is in the right direction for producing a positive pole at the upper eX- tremity of the rod C, the arm 0 thus being magnetized with a sign opposite to the magnetization of the upper pole c of the magnet is attracted by this latter and tends to be applied against it, thus causing the rotation of the plug A and the opening of the'cock; but this rotation, if the plug remained applied to its seat, would not be possible in practice, because in order to overcome the friction a considerable magnetic force would be required. This difficulty is obviated by the action of the pallet F. When the current passes into the coil G, the soft-iron tube D becomes magnetized and its extremity (Z attract-s this pallet F, which consequently lifts the red C, resting upon it. The plug A is thus lifted from its seat, and it will be understood that under these conditions the effort required to cause it to rotate is very small. This is one of the characteristic features of myinvention. By means of this electrical operation of the cock may be effected with very weak currents. By the operation which has just been described the cock is opened, the arm 0, having a negative polarity, having been attracted by the positive pole of the permanent magnet and remaining in this position. Ofcourse as soon as the current ceases to flow the pallet F leaves the extremity of the tube D and resumes its original position and the plug falls upon its seat.
In order to effect the closing of the cock, a current is caused to flow into the coil G, the direction of which current is opposite to that causing the opening of the cock. The polarity of the arm 0 becoming negative, this latter is attracted by the positive pole c of the permanent magnet, while at the same time the pallet F lifts the rod 0, and with it the plug A, the rotation of which is thereby facilitated. The cock is thus closed.
The above represents the typical arrangement of my improved cock capable of operation by electricity from a distance. It is suitable for use with fluids of all kinds. I will now describe a form of its application to gasburners for the purpose of enabling them to be ignited and extinguished from a distance.

Figs. 5 to 12 of the drawings relate to acock of this kind and to some modified forms thereof. The arrangement illustrated in Figs. 1, The gas enters through a chamber I-I, whence it reaches the passages B B. \Vhen the cock is open and the gas passes from the said passages 13 B into the passages a a, it enters a chamber 1, in which is arranged the permanent magnet and upon which is mounted the burner J. A small ignition-tube K, the extremity 7.; of which is situated at a suitable distance from theburner, communicates with a lateral passage 7t, opening upon the seat of the cock at a point where it is always closed by the body of the plug A. At the orifice 7c of the ignition-tube is provided a device L for effecting ignition either by means of an incandescent platinum wire or a self-induction spark by means of a trembler or induction-spark between two points, such device being connected with the circuit of the coil either in parallel or in series in any convenient manner.
It is unnecessary to repeat the explanation of the operation which has already been given, and I will refer only to the special features relating to the ignition of the burner. When the plug A is lifted from its seat for the purpose of opening the cock, as has already been seen, there is formed between the plug and its seat an annular space through which the gas enters at all parts, entering both the chamher I and the lateral passage L of the ignition-tube, the orifice of which upon the seat of the plug is open. The platinum wire becomes incandescent (or the spark passes, as the case may be) adjacent to the extremity 7c of the ignition-tube almost simultaneously. The small jet of gas issuing at this point ignites and lights the burner. Vhen the passage of the current is interrupted upon ignition having taken place, the orifice of the lateral passage 7. of the ignition-tube is blocked, and the ignition-flame consequently becomes extinguished,while the burner remains alight, the plug remaining in the open position. When the current is caused to flow in the reverse direction for the purpose of extinguishing the burner, the same phenomena are reproduced. The gas-jet of; theigniterbecomcs lighted and then immediately becomes extinguished when the plug again falls upon its seat. The burner is extinguished owing to the fact that the plug occupies the closed position.
I reserve the right to establish myimproved cock in any form whereby the principle of my invention remains unaltered. The plug may be of cylindrical, conical, hemispherical, or similar form. The number of passages opening upon the seat and of those in the plug corresponding thereto may vary as desired. The plug may be reapplied upon its seat by means of a spring, and such device might be necessary if the position in which the cock is to be fitted prevents the rod of the plug from occupyin g a vertical position. The permanent magnets may be replaced by electromagnets suitably connected with the circuit in order to effectthe formation of suitable polarities.
It will be noticed that the arrangement of the permanent magnet (or of an electromagnet substituted therefor) maybe varied. In Figs. 9 to 12 some modifications have been represented by way of example.
In the device illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 the rod G of the plug Ais not of soft iron, or at all events need not be of soft iron, as it is not magnetized upon the passage of the current. The coil G and its tubular core D are arranged laterally, and the pallet F, upon which rests the red C, is continued below the extremity (Z of the tubular core. XVithin this latter is engaged a soft-iron rod 0 not capable of vertical displacement and which at its upper extremity is rigidly attached to a horizontal soft-iron arm 0, arranged opposite to the poles of the permanent horseshoe-magnet E. It is also rigidly fixed to a small toothed sector 0 which engages with a small pinion ct, fixed to the plug A of the cook. The operation is similar to that already explained, the plug being in this case actuated by the independent rod 0. Under these circumstances the teeth formed. upon pinion and the sector should be sulliciently large to remain always in engagement, notwithstanding the vertical displacement of the plug.
In the arrangement shown in Figs. 11 and 12 the coil G (which may be provided with a solid core D) is arranged laterally to the plug of the cock. This latter is rigidly attached to the permanent magnet E, between the two poles e e of which is arranged the pole d of the fixed core of the coil. In this case it is the permanent magnet which is displaced ac cording to the polarity of the extremity d o the core.
I claim as my invention-- 1. An electrically-operated cock, having a plug, and a valve-seat for the plug, electromagnetic means for lifting the plug oif its seat, magnetic means to then rotate it, and then allow it to drop onto its seat again at a different relative peripheral position,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An electrically-operated cock having a plug with passages, and a valve-seat for the plug having corresponding passages, in combin ation With electrical means for lifting the plug off its seat, magnetic means to rotate it and drop it onto its seat again to cause the registration or non-registration of the plugpassages with the valve-seat passages, substantially as described.
3. An electrically-operated cock having a plug, and a valve-seat therefor, an electromagnet adapted to raise the plug and a permanent magnet adapted to rotate the plug upon the passage of current through the electromagnet, said plug being adapted to again resume its valve-seat on the cessation of the passage of current, substantially as described.
l. An electrically-operated cock having a plug and a valve-seat therefor, an armature adapted to operate the plug longitudinally, an eleetromagnet to operate the armature, and a permanent magnet adapted to rotate the plug, substantially as described.
5. An electrically-operated cock having a plug and a valve-seat therefor, an armature adapted to operate the plug longitudinally, another armature secured to the plug, a permanent magnet to operate said last armature to rotate it substantially as described.
6. An electrically-operated cock having a plug with passages, and a valve-seat therefor having corresponding passages,aburner-tnbe and a pilot-light, means for lifting the plug from its seat, rotating it and again seating it, to cause the two sets of passages to register or not as desired, said pilot-light being in communication with the valve-seat by another passage at a point where the plug-passages areso adapted as to never register, substantially as described.
7. An electrically-operated cock having a plug, a valve-seat for the plug, a soft-iron core attached to the plug, passages in the plug and in the valve-seat, an electromagnet encircling the core part, and passages 0011* neeting with the valve-seat passages, also encircled by the electromagnet, substantially as described.
8. A11 electrically-operated cock having a plug, a valve-seat for the plug, a soft-iron core attached to the plug, passages in the plug and in the valve-seat, an electromagnet encircling the core part, passages connecting with the valve-seat passages, also encircled by the eleetromagnet, and an armature to be operated by the electromagnet and itself adapted to move the plug longitudinally, substantially as described.
