DAVID H. DYER, OF lVlLKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOROF ONE-FOURTH T GEORGE I g R. WILLETT, OF- PITTSB use PENNSYLVANIA.
PISTON.
:To all whom 2t may concern: 7 Q Be it known that-I, Davin H. DYER, of Wilkinsburg, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pistons, of which the-fol- I lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part Figure 1 is a vertical section illustrating my invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line II-II of Fig. 1; Fig. .10 3 is a section on the lineIII III of'Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view showing one of the packing rings on its seat, and Fig.5 is a detail view showing a'modified form of packing seat. l l p r My invention has relation to pistons, and more especial ly to pistons which are designed to be used in conne ction with hydraulic elevators of the vertical cylinder =type. c
Heretofore, in the operation of these elevators, great difiicnlty has been experienced in holding the elevator; car:v stationary at the different floors oi the building, by: oi the leakage 'of'the fluid past the piston'xin the actuatingeylinder, a comparatively small leakage 'sufii ehtitbpermit aslight movement of -the piston caii'sing be considerable movement of the. elevator car. This "leakage has been due to rapid-wear of the piston packing, and the impossibility of keeping the packing tight inoperationfi. v invention is designed overcome thisdifficulty Ljbypr'oviding a piston in which the use of cup leathers is ployed, which are forced into engagement with the inne'r wall of the cylinder by the pressure of the actuating fluid. a My invention also consists in the novel construction of that portion of the piston in which the packing rings are seated whereby it can bereadily removed from the body of the piston. r My invention is also applicable to pistons such as are employed in the piston valves and 'to pistons generally. Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numoral 2 designates the lower portion of a hydraulic olevator cylinder of the vertical type, having the lower .hea d3, U 4 desi nates the usual supply pipe, and 5 the usual regulating or controlling valve. v 6 designates the body portion of the piston .to which are connected the rods 7, by means of the nuts 8, which are seated underneath the top plate or bridge 9 of the piston body which is supported by the segmental lugs 10.
The lower end of the piston body is rabbeted at its edge toreceive the detachable lower portion 1]., which is secured thereto by means of the bolt-5 12 or by othersuitable means. The outer surface of the portion 12 is formed with a series of surrounding grooves, in which Specification of Letters Patent. v A pplieation'filed April 4,1907.- SerialNo. 366,330.
being connected with the chamber 15, formed by the chamber 15.by meanspf one or more ports 17 through eled. in

Pressure is admitted to the the piston body.
c. 18 is a removable plug in the bottom wall oi the cham ber 15 to permit said chamber to be drained and cleaned. By means of the pressure in the chamber 15 acting through the o'r passages 16, and the pressure chamhers '14, 'the'i'rings l3 are'foreed into packing engage 'inent withllghe wallsoi the cylinder. so tightly that practically' all leakage is prevented, this having been demonstrated-by me by'a'ctual'use of these pistons.

This valveis-provided' .With thedetachable hollow head-20, which, small-red t0 the'body by means of. the rod or stem-'21; .;This'head,"
4 together with the body of the valve, forms e p essure chamber 22, which is supplied by means'of 'ports 23 leading through the lower portion of the body. ex "or is'pr'ovided with packing ripgs 24-similar to the rmgs jlfi before described, their seats beingcofine'c ted 'wi thtli'echamber 22 by means'of the ports2 5if-l have also shown the upper head 26oi the piston p with similar packing rings27, and also the ilot va 6 ded l 28 with similar ringside, A I v. The advantages of my invention ren'xltfrom the con struction and arrangement whereby the pressure "tli actuating fluid is utilized to maintain theseating th packing rings in the manner. the provisio sure at all points, althoughsom'eof the portsorpsssag 16 may become choked or closed; and'in tl ecofistructio may be readily detached be when necessary. 1
Various changes may be madeinthe deta struction ai'i'd arrangementpwithout departing from. the spirit and sco'peof my invention, since "WlmtIclaim'isii 1. A packlngisectlon on elevator pistons, comprising a hollow, cylindrical rhn member adapted to-be secured to a piston head and having a plurality of clreumterentlal packing seats, said member being open at its upper end 11 1 and closed at its loiver end; and having a plurality oflports n rlifi po -lion fitted and adjustably secnred'to -said head,
said hollow section, being closed by the head to form ap essure chiimber which-communicutes with the cylinder.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
