BOLSTER STRUCTURE Specification of Letters Patent.

' principal object is to provide a novel, easily manufactured and effective structure, which though light in weight, is very strong, the weight of the car being supported by walls of the bolster that are braced with respect to each other and receiving substantially all the vertical, transverse and other strains or loads.
A further and important object is to so combine the truck bolster with the body bolster that a highly effective structure as a whole is secured.
The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l. is a sectional view through a portion of a car structure, showing the car and truck bolsters partly in elevation andpartly in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the truck bolster. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of said bolster. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view on the line (i- G of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 88 of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a top plan view of the car bolster. Fig. 10 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The truck frame, which may be of any desired character, is designated generally by the reference numeral 11. Mounted therein is the truck bolster 12 associated with which are the combined column guides and spring'seats 13, fully disclosed and covered by claims in a co-pending'application. This bolster consists of downwardly convergent side walls 13, which constitute the supporting walls of the structure. Their lower margins are connected by a comparatively narrow and perforated bottom wall 14, while their upper margins are connected by a wider top wall 15. This top wall is provided with a center bearing consisting of an upstanding circular flange 16 forming a seat 17 and a depending boss 18 having a central opening 19 to receive the usual king bolt. The center bearing is reinforced by webs 20 located on opposite sides of the boss and extending below the same, the said webs connecting the boss with the side walls 13 and terminating short of the bottom wall 14, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 7. The top wall 15 is provided on opposite sides of the center bearing with openings 21, and reinforcing webs 22 depending from the top wall between the openings, connect the upper margins of the side walls. The usual side bearings 23 are employed, and stop or guide flanges 24 that cooperate with the side members of the truck are located outside the bearings 23, and are preferably connected thereto by webs 25 of any suitable character. These webs, however, are not essential and may be dispensed with.
Associated with the truck bolster, as above described, is a body bolster 26. This body bolster consists of upwardly convergent side walls 27 having their lower margins connected by a 'bottom wall 28 that is provided with a center bearing consisting of a depending boss 29 that is received in the seat 17 of the center bearingof the truck bolster. A top wall 30 connects the upper margins of the side walls 27 of the body bolster, and said top wall is provided with opposite outstanding cars 31 adapted to be secured to the sills 32 constituting a part of the under frame of the car. The top and bottom walls 28 and 30 are provided on opposite sides of the center bearing with openings 33, and the bolster is reinforced between the openings by webs 34 preferably connected to all the side walls. The cars 31 are also preferably reinforced by webs 35 located on the outer sides of the side walls 27.
In this structure, it will be observed that the side walls 13 of the truck bolster sustain practically the entire weight of the superimposed car and load, and the top and bottom walls merely constitute reinforcements. In this connection, it is to be noted that the center hearing is reinforced by the webs 20 and that these webs transmit the load and strain not to the bottom wall but to said side walls. The result is a structure which while very light in weight, is exceedingly strong, and more: over can be readily manufactured. Furthermore, the particular arrangement and association of the two bolsters is important, because of the strength secured combined with lightness in weight.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation,.and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A bolster comprising top and bottom walls and supporting side walls, a center bearing including a boss depending between the side walls, and reinforcing webs for the boss connecting the same to the side walls and extending below the lower end of the boss, said webs terminating short of the bottom wall.
2. A bolster comprising eonvergently disposed side walls, a bottom wall connecting the lower margins of the side walls, a top wall connecting the upper margins of the side walls, a center bearing carried by the top wall, 'a boss depending between the side walls, and downwardly tapered reinforcing webs for the boss connecting said boss to the side walls and being free from the bottom wall.
3. A bolster comprising convergently disposed side walls, a bottom wall connecting the lower margins of the side walls, a top wall connecting the upper margins of the side walls and having a center bearing including; a boss depending between the side walls, said top wall having spaced openings on opposite sides of the bearing, reinforcing webs bridging the space between and connecting the side walls, said webs depending from the top wall between the openings in said top wall, and reinforcing webs for the boss connecting the same to the side walls and extending below the lower end of said boss, said webs being tapered and terminating short of the bottom walls.
4. The combination with a truck bolster that is downwardly tapered in cross section, of a car bolster located on the truck bolster and upwardly tapered in cross section, and a pivotal connection between the bolsters.
5. The combination with a truck bolster comprising downwardly convergent side walls, top and bottom walls connecting the upper and lower margins of the side Walls, and a center bearing carried by the top wall, of a car bolster comprising upwardly convergent side walls, top and bottom walls connecting the upper and lower margins of the side walls, means for securing the upper portions of the car bolster to a car frame, and a-bearing carried by the lower wall of the car bolster and cooperating with the bearing of the truck bolster.
6. The combination with a truck bolster having a center bearing,v of a car bolster comprising upwardly convergent side walls, a bottom wall connecting the side walls and having a center bearing cooperating with the bearing of the truck bolster, a top wall connecting the upper margins of the side walls, and ears carried by the top wall and projecting beyond the bolster.
7. A bolster comprising convergent side walls, top and bottom walls connecting the same, the top wall being narrower than the bottom wall, and opposite outstanding perforate ears carried by the top wall and constituting means for securing the bolster to the under frame of a car.
8. A bolster comprising side walls, a bottom wall connecting the side walls, perforate ears projecting from the outer sides of the upper portions of the side walls and constituting means for securing the bolster to the under frame of a car, and reinforcing webs located beneath the ears and outstanding from the side walls, said Webs terminating short of the perforations.
