Be it known that I, GUSTAF Anvil) ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland,l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolsters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full,lclear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention. relates toV bolsters for railway cars` and has for its object to produce a comparatively light structure having the requisite strength andi rigidity to enable it eiiciently' to resist the strains to which it is subjected in service.
A principal feature of the invention consists in constructing a bolster with a beam member formed from a single sheet or plate of metal and comprising spaced side walls which are united atI their upper and lower edges, certain of the corresponding edges of the side walls being integrally united by a portion of the sheet or plate and the other of said edges being united through .flanges extending toward each other and alsoconstituting a portion of the sheet, the said flanges being of a form affording openings permitting access to the space between the side walls of the beam member, and said flanges being united. by weldingv at the ends of said openings.
Another feature of the invention consists in providing a bolster with a beam member formed from a single` sheet lof metal and comprising spaced side wall`s united at their upper and lower edges through integral portions of said sheet, the connection of the said side walls along certain corresponding edges thereof being effected through flange portions of sai-d sheet, the said flange por- .tions being of av form producing openings affording access to theY space between `the ing connected at the ends of- -said openings, and the said openings being bordered by stiifening flanges which constitute integral parts of the said sheet, of metal.
Another feature of the invention consistsl in constructing a bolster with a beam member formed of sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls, and in securing to saidy beam member a center plate provided with a circular guiding flange extending out- Y vardly beyond the sides of the beam mem- A further feature of the invention consists in providing a bolster with a beam member formed of a sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls, and in securing to said beam member a, center plate having depending flanges between which the side walls of the beam are received, the said cen'- ter plate also having a circular guiding flange projecting outwardly beyond the side walls of the beam above the said depending anges. v
A further feature ofthe invention resides in providing the bolster with a beam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls, and in securing to said beam member a center plate and a fille-r member, the-latter being disposed between the side walls of the beam beneath vsaid center plate andfhavinga longitudinally extending web and transversely extending walls which intersect and are united to said web adjacent the circular flange of the center plate.
Another feature of the invention resides in constructing a bolster with a beam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls, and in securing thereto a center plate and a liller member, the filler member being attached to the side walls of the beam beneath the center plate`and being provided with transversely extending downwardly convergent walls.
Another feature of the invention consists in providing a bolster with a beam member formed lfrom a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls, and in rein-y forcing the ends of said beam memberby ofthe saidbeam at the opposite ends 'thereof, each of the said bolster braces having a plurality of spaced transversely extending diaphragms each of which is in a position;
to extend over a pair of the ,customary bolster supporting springs. Another feature of the invention res1des fV iny constructing the bolster with a, beania member formed of sheet metaly and com-fi prising spaced side walls, and in securing bolster end braces and corresponding bolster guides to said beam member at opposite ends thereof, the bolster end braces being interposed between the side walls of the beam member and having longitudinally extending flanges, andf'tlie bolster guide members being arranged in transverse alinement with the respective end braces and having oppesitely disposed longitudinally extending lugs whereby rivets for securing the bolster guides to the beam ymember also sei-ve to unite the boltei end braces to the said beam member.
A still further feature of the invention consi'sts in constructing a bolster -witli a beam member formed of a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls between which end braces are interposed at opposite ends of said beam, a. plurality of bolster guides being disposed in transverse alinement with each of the bolsterl end braces, and a plurality of weld plugs being employed to form a welded connection between the respective side walls of the beam and the corresponding bolster end braces.
There are other features of the invention relating to particular details of construction and to advantageous relations of parts, all as will hereinafter appear.

The truck bolster illustrated in the drawings comprises a beam member 1 to which are secured a center plate 2, a center filler 3, bolster end braces 4, bolster guides 5 and 'side bearings 6.
The beam member 1 of the bolster is preferably formed from a single plate or sheet of steel and may be conveniently produced by bending a blank of the form shown in Fig. 10 sol as to provide the beam member with parallel spaced side walls 7 whose upper edges are integrally united by a portion of said sheet forming the upper side 8 of the beam member, and whose lower edges are united through oppositely disposed flanges 9 extending toward each other and also forming a part of said sheet or plate. rIfhe flanges 9 are of a form resulting in'pi'oviding between them a pluralitypf elongated openings 10 bordered by stifening flanges 11 projecting inwardly between the sidewalls 7 of the beam member and constituting 1ntegral parts of the blank. Each of 'the flanges 9 preferably comprises a central portion 12, end portions 13 and intermediate portions-14. The elongated openings. 10 extend upon oppo'site sides of the points of junction of the inclined portions of the flanges 9 with the central portions thereof, and the said central portions 12 are welded together between said openings, as indicated at 15, thus imparting great strength and stiffness to the beam where greatest strength is required. The fianges 9 are .preferably also welded together at the junctions of the inclined portions 14 with the. respective end portions 13 of said flanges, as indicated at 10, thus securely uniting the flanges 9 at the bends therein adjacent the inner ends of the bolster guides 5. Welds 17 are preferably also employed to unit the bottom flanges 9 of the beam member adjacent the outer ends of the bolster end braces 4 and bolster guides 5, the said welds 16 and 17 preferably also serving, as illustrated in Fig. 8, to unite the end braces to thebeam member 1 beneath and intermediate of the length of the transversely extending spaced diaphragme 18 of the end braces. To prevent the collection of moisture the bolster may be provided between the elongated aperturesvlO with a drainage opening 19 which intersects the central weld 15.v
The openings 10 between the lower flanges of the beam 1 afford ready access to the space between the side walls of the beam member and thus enable the riveting of the center plate 2, the center filler 3 and the end braces and bolster guides' 4 and 5, re-
speetively, to be easily accomplished. The
` stiffening flanges 11 bordering the openings at points between the welds 15 and 16 than f filler is also preferably provided with side` at points adjacent said welds and preferably are deepest at or adjacent the points where the lower flanges 9 of the beam member change the direction at the junctions of the central portions 12 of said flanges with the inclined portions 14 thereof.
The center plate v2 has al circular guiding flange 20 for'cooperating with a mating center `plate and is also formed with a centrally disposed perforated boss 21'for receiving the usual center ypin or king bolt. Oppositely disposed portions 22 of the circular guiding flange extend outwardly beyond the respectively adjacent side walls 7 4of the beam member of the bolster, and below said overhangingy portions the-` center plate is provided with depending lugs or flanges 23 receiving the side walls of thel beam member 1 between them. Upon opposite sides of the overhanging portions 22 of the circular guiding flange the center plate is formed with flanges 24 which engage the upper side 8 of the beam member 1, the said flanges being perforated to receive rivets 25 serving to secure the center plate to the beam member. rlhe rivets 25 may advantageously be arranged in transversely extending rows.
The filler member 3 secured between the side walls of the beam member 1 beneath the center plate is provided with a central hollow column 26 adapted to receive a king bolt and is fashioned with transversely extending downwardly convergent walls 27 which are integrally united to said column by a centrally disposed longitudinal extend# ing web 28'. The' web 28 and convergent transversely extending walls 27 intersect in proximity to the portions of the circular guiding flange 20 which are in longitudinal alinement with the bolster side bearings 6, thereby affording very effective resistance in the line of application of the load when the `body bolster (not shown) bears down upon either 'of the side bearings 6 when the car rocks laterally. The center walls 29 which unite the convergent end walls 27 and which are themselves united through the column 26 by a centrally disposed transverse web 30. The side walls and end walls of the filler vmember as wells as the intermediate webs 28 and 30 thereof, are integrally united by a top plate 31 which contacts the under surface of the upper portion 8 of the beam member. and the filler member 3 may also advantageouslyY have a lower wall 32 serving further to strengthen said filler member. The side walls 29 of the center filler are prolonged longitudinally of the bolster to provide of the bolster.
transversely spaced; flanges 33 projecting beyond the downwardly convergent walls 27 in opposite directions towards the ends The flanges 33 are perforated to receive' rivets 34 which pass through the side walls 7 of the beam member 1, thereby securing the filler to the said beam member by connecting devices independent of those by which the center plate is retained in place. As shown in the drawings. it is preferred to arrange certain of the connecting rivets 34 in downwardly convergent rows adjacent the correspondingly convergent end walls 27 of the ller member 3. By thus forming the filler with downwardly convergent transverse walls and providing for its attachment to the beam member 1 through correspondingly convergent rows of rivets not only is the weight of the filler member*l 3 decreased but its beam length and bending moment are. also reduced. The depending portions 23 of the center plate embracing the side walls of the beam member between them operate to relieve the rivets 25 of the side thrusts) to which the center plate is subjected; yand not,- withstanding that the inner circumference of the overhanging portions 22 of the circular guiding flange of the center plate extends outwardly beyond the inner faces of the Side walls 7 of the beam member, the support afforded by the engagement of the longitudinally extending walls 29 of the filler with the inner faces of the side walls 7 of the beam member amply sustain said side walls against strains transmitted thereto from the overhanging parts of the center plate.
The side bearings 6 may conveniently be formed with depending lugs 35 which embracethe vbeam member 1. thus reducing the strain upon the rivets 36 securing the side bearings to said beam.
The beam member of the. bolster is reinforced at its opposite ends by bolster end braces 4 interposed between and engaging the-side walls 7 of said beam member. Each of these end braces is provided with a pluy rality of longitudinally spaced diaphragme 18 adapted to extend over the usual bolster supporting springs 37 (see Fig. 1) each diaphragm being disposed above a pair of said springs. The. end braces, which are preferably fashioned by bending. a blank of the form shown in Fig. 11, are provided with longitudinally disposed oppositely ex tending perforated flanges 38 for enabling said braces to be riveted to the side walls of the beam member 1. The braces are also furnished with a web 39 integrally uniting the lower edges of the diaphragms 18 and with upwardly extending tab portions 40. The web 39 is seated lupon the inturned flanges 9 of the beam member 1 while the tab portions 40 bear against the inner faces l of the side walls 7A of the said beam member and are welded to said side walls by plugs 41 -formed by filling the apertures 42 in the blank by welding metal the-rein.
At each end of the bolster and arranged braces 4 to the side walls 7. of the beam.
1n manufacturing the bolster the blank (see Fig. 10) for producing the beam member thereof is bent to the proper shape as also is the blank (see Fig. 11) from which the bolster end braces 4 are fashioned. The center filler 3 may then be inserted through one of the ends of the beam member 1 and be riveted in position at the center of said beam, after which the center plate 2 may be applied. After having been positioned within the beam member 1 the openings 42 in the sideI walls of the beam member are filled by welding, thus rigidly uniting the tabs 40 of the end braces to the respectively adjacent side walls of the beam member 1. The bolster guides 5 and side bearings 6 may thereafter be riveted in place and the lower flanges 9 then be united by forming the welds 15, 16 and 17.
A bolster embodying the features of invention hereinv claimed possesses great strength and stiffness and may be readily manufactured or repaired when replacements of parts become necessary.Y

4. A bolster involving a beam formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls united at their upper and lower edges, certain of said corresponding edges being integrally united by a portion of said sheet and other of said edges being united through flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, the said Hanges being of a form affording openings permitting access to the space between said side walls, the said flanges being united at the ends of said openings, and said openings being bordered by stilfening flanges which project inwardly between the said side walls.
5. A bolster involving a beam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced parallel side walls united at their upper and lower edges, the upper edges of said side walls being integrally united by a portion of said sheet and the lower edges of said side walls being united through flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, the said flanges being of a form affording openings permitting access to the space between said side walls, said flanges being welded together at the ends of said openings, and said openings being bordered by stiffening flanges forming a part of said sheet and projecting upwardly between said side walls, the said stifl'eningvflanges being of greater depth at points between said welds than at points adjacent said welds. A bolster involving a beam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls, .the upper edges of said side walls being integrally united by a portion of said sheet and the lower edges of said side walls being bordered by flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, said flanges having formed between them a plurality of elongated openings provided with tapering ends.
7. A bolster involving a beam member formed vfroma single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls, the upper edges of saidv side walls being integrally united by av portion of' said sheet andthe -lower edges of said side'walls being bordered by flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, each of said flanges having a centrally disposed portion and inclined portions extending in opposite directions from said centrally disposed portion, the .saidy flanges having formed between them a plurality of elon'- gated openings respectively extending on opposite sides 'of the points of junction of said central portion with the said inclined portions, and said openings being bordered by stiflening flanges which are of greater depth at said junction points than at points adjacent the ends of said openings.
8. A bolster involving a beam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls united at their upper and lower edges, the upper edges of said side walls being integrally united by a portion of said sheet and the lower edges of said side walls being united through flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, each of said flanges having a central portion, end portions, and inclined portions intermediate of said central and Y end portions, the said flanges having formed between them a plurality of elongated openings respectively extending on opposite sides of the points of junction of said central portion with the said inclined portions, the central portions of said flanges being united between said openings, and said flanges being united at the junctions of the inclined portions with the respectively adjacent end portions of said flanges.
9. A bolster involving a beam member formedf-rom a single sheet of metal andv comprising spaced side walls united at their upper and lower edges, the upper edges of said side walls being integrally united by a portion of said sheet and the lower edges of said side walls being united through flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, each of said flanges being formed with a central portion, end portionsk and .inclined portions intermediate of said central portion and the respective end portions of said flanges, the said flanges having formed between them a plurality of elongated openings respectively extending on opposite sides ofthe points of junction of said Vcentral portion with the said inclined portions, the central portions of said flanges being welded together between said openings, tlie saidy flanges beingv also welded together at the junctions of the inclined portions with the respective end portions of said flanges, and each of said openings being bordered by stidening flanges formed as a portion of said sheet.

A bolster involving a beam member formed of sheet metal and comprising a top and spaced side walls integral therewith, and a center plate secured to said beam member, said center plate having a circular guiding flange which extends outwardly beyond the sides of saidbeam member, and flanges connected thereto andy more closely spaced than. the diameter of the guiding flange, said flanges overlapping the sides of said beam.
11. A bolster involving a beam member formed from sheet metal and comprising a top and spaced sidewalls integral therewith, and a. center plate having oppositely disposed depending flanges receiving said side walls between them, and also having a cir'. cular guiding flange extending outwardly beyond said sides of the beam member above said depending flanges and larger in diameter than the distance between said depending flanges.

A bolster involving a beam member l formed from a sheet of metal, and comprising spaced side walls vunited at their upper edges by a portion ofy said sheet, and a center plate having a circular guiding flange extending outwardly beyond the said sides of the beam member, the said center plate also being provided with flanges adapted to receive rivets for securing said center plate to the portion of said sheet by which said side walls are connected, said last named flanges being disposed upon opposite sides of the poi-tions of said circular flange which extend beyond the said side walls, and cle-, pending flanges formed on the opposite edges of said circular guiding flange, said depending flanges being interiorly disposed with respect to the guiding flange and adapted to overlappingly engage the side walls of' said beam.
13. A bolster involving a beam member versely extending walls which intersect and are united to said web adjacent the said circular flange of said center plate.
14. A bolster involving a beam member formed from sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls, a center plate secured to said beam member and provided with a circular guiding flange, and a filler-member secured to said side walls beneath said center plate, said filler member having a longitudinally extending web, and a plurality of side walls and a plurality of transversely extending walls which are respectively united to said web and to said side walls.
15. A bolster involving a beam formed from sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls, a center plate secured to said beam member, and a filler member secured to said side walls beneath said center plate, said filler member having' a plurality of Webs extending longitudinally of said beam and a pair of transversely extending downwardly convergent walls integrally united to said longitudinally extending webs.
16. A bolster involving a beam member formed from sheet metal and comprising a top and spaced side Walls integral therewith, a center plate, and a filler member secured to said beam beneath said center plate between said side walls and adjacent the upper edges of the latter, said filler member having a pair of transversely extending downwardly convergent end walls.
17. A bolster involving a beam member formed from sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls, a center plate secured to said beam member, a filler member inter posed between said side Walls beneath said center plate, said filler having transversely extending downwardly convergent walls, and securing flanges spaced transversely of -said beam and extending in opposite directions from said convergent walls, and rivets arranged in downwardly convergent rows for connecting the said securing flanges to the respectively adjacent side walls of said beam member.
18. A bolster involving a beam member formed from sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls, a center plate secured to said' beam member, a filler member interposed between said side walls beneath said center plate, said filler having transversely extending downwardly convergent walls, and securing flanges spaced transversely of said beam and extending in opposite directions from said convergent walls, and means extending through said flanges and the corresponding side walls of said beam member for securing said filler to said beam.
19. A bolster involving a beam member formed from a sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls united at their upper edges by a portion of said sheet and formed with lower flanges directly united, a center plate, a filler member disposed between said side walls in vertical alinement with said center plate, means for securing said center plate to said beam member, and independent means for securing said filler to said beam member. v
20. A bolster involving a beam member formed of sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls and lower flanges directly united, a center `plate secured to said beam member and having a circular guiding flange the i11- ner circumference of which extends outwardly beyond the inner faces of said side l respectively engaging the outer faces of said side Walls, each of said end braces being provided with longitudinally disposed oppositely extending flanges, and each of said bolster guides being provided with oppositely disposed longitudinally extending lugs, and means extending through the respective flanges and their corresponding lugs for securing said end braces and bolster guides to said beam member.
22. A bolster involving a beam member formed of sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls, and bolster end braces interposed between said side Walls at each end of and secured to said beam member, each of said bolster end braces being formed of a single sheet of metal and provided with a. plurality of longitudinally spaced 'diaphragms each of which is adapted to extend over a pair of bolster supporting springs.
23. A bolster involving a beam member 'formed of sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls, bolster end braces respectively interposed between said side walls at the opposite ends of said beam member, a plurality of bolster guides at each end of said beam member arrange-d in transverse alinement with the corresponding bolster end braces, and a plurality of weld plugs respectively forming Weld connections between said bolster end braces and said beam member.
24. A bolster involvinga beam member formed of sheet metal and comprising spaced side walls, bolster end braces interposed between said side walls at opposite ends of said beam member, a plurality of bolster guides engaging the said beam member in transverse alinement with the respective end braces, and a plurality otmeans respectively'torming a welded union ot each of said bolster end braces and the corresponding side Walls of said beam member.
25. A bolster in"olving a beam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls united at their upper and lower edges, the upper edges being integrall united by a portion of said sheet and t e lower edges'being united through flanges forming a portion 4of said sheet and extending toward each other, and bolster end. braces interposed between said side walls and engaging said flanges at each end of said bolster, each of said end braces being connected to said beam member through a weld uniting said flanges.
26; A bolster involving a lbeam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprisingspaced side walls which are integrally united at their upper edges by a portion of said sheet and are united at their lower edges through flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, and a plurality of bolster end braces respectively interposed between said side walls and engaging said flanges at opposite ends of the bolster, the said end races being provided with transversely extending longitudinally spaced diaphragms, and each of said end braces being connected to said beam beneath said diaphragms by welds connecting said flanges.
27. A bolster involving a beam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced vertically extending side walls which are integrally united at their upper edges by a portion of said sheet, and a center plate secured to said beam member,
said center plate having a circular guidingV flange which extends outwardly beyond the sides of said beam member and also having oppositely disposed depending flanges engaging the outer sides of the respectively adjacent side walls of the beam member and inwardly disposed with respect to the extreme outwardly extending portions of the circular guiding flange.

A bolster involving a beam member formed from a single sheet of metal and comprising spaced side walls which are integrally united at their upper edges by aportion of said sheet and are united at their lower edges through flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, and bolster guides mounted upon the opposite ends of said beam, the said flanges being formed with bends at the inner ends of said bolster guides and being connected by welding atsthe bends.

A bolster involving a beam member formed from a single sheet of 'metal and comprising spaced side walls, the upper edges of said Walls being integrally united by a. portion of' said sheet and the lower edges of said walls being united through flanges forming a portion of said sheet and extending toward each other, a plurality of bolster guides secured to said beam member at opposite ends thereof, and a plurality of bolster end braces respectively interposed between said walls at the opposite ends of' said beam member, each of said end braces being formed with longitudinally spaced transversely extending diaphragms which are united at their lower edges by a web engaging said flanges and also being formed with means projecting in opposite directions from the respective diaphragms for permitting said diaphragms and the adjacent bolster guides to be connected to said beam member by rivets forming a common means of connection to said beam member.
