COMBINED ENVELOP AND LETTER-SHEET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed June 3,1907. Serial No. 377,064.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rosoon CONKLING OZMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Combined Envelop and Letter-Sheet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to letter packages, my more particular object being to provide a strip of such construction as to be readily folded so as to form the body of a letter and also to serve as an envelop encircling the same.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing one form of strip as partially folded for carrying a letter and as provided with a portion to be wrapped'around the folded leaves, thereby constituting practically an envelop; Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the same, the folding of the part representing the envelop being more nearly completed; Fig. 3 is a plan showing the device complete and ready for the mail; Fig. 4 is an enlarged central section upon the line 44 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrow, and showing how the portion representing the envelop encircles the other portion and also showing the diagonal fold.
A single strip of writing paper 5, of uniform width and of any desired length, is folded upon itself so as to form sheets, leaves or panels 6, and is provided with a fold 7 whereby the sheet is turned substantially at a right angle with itself. The portion thus bent backward is again folded at 8, 9 and 10, so as to practically form an envelop encircling the folded leaves or panels 6. The strip terminates in a portion 11 beveled at 12 and provided with an adhesive 12 for securing it in position. The portion just mentioned having been folded, the persons name 13 and address lines 14, 15 are added, as indicated in Fig. 3. The various postal marks 16, 17 are afterward applied, the mark 17 being used as is customary for cancelinga stamp 18.
My device is used as follows: A letter is written upon the sheets, leaves or panels 6 and the latter are folded in any convenient manner, such, for instance, as that indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The letter being finished, the
remaining portion of the strip is folded diagonally at 7 and bent around at right angles to the folded leaves, enveloping them as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the flap 11 being secured in position by the action of the adhesive 12. The device being finished and ready for the mail appears as indicated in Fig. 3.
The purpose and usefulness of this invention are best accomplished, for letter-writing purposes, when the strip used is about three and one-half or four inches wide, affording the writer the opportunity of writing the narrow way of the paper, if he wishes, leaving no margin, and, as the envelop is attached, it will be possible and proper to avoid the mailing of unnecessary blank sheets or pages by tearing off by means of a straight edge, or by cutting off, only so much of the letter sheet as is written upon. It will be observed that this letter device is very desirable for writers of short notes or long letters. In long letters no numbering or tearing sheets from a note book is necessary. When writing it is unnecessary to unfold the entire letter sheet, but each fold may be turned over like a leaf in a book. For announcements and invitations the letter sheet with envelop will be very appropriate. And as a device for sending a compact advertisement, it allows several pages to be securely bound together with the envelop flap as if in a sealed envelop while, at the same time, the pages are open for postal inspection, using the wrapperfeature only.
When only a page or two is folded within the envelop, the stamp18 may be placed partly on the portion 6 and partly on the flap, to make the flap more firmly secure in its place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A combined envelop and letter sheet, comprising a single strip of writing paper folded upon itself so as to form leaves or panels for holding the message to be carried, said strip being provided with an oblique fold whereby its general direction is bent at a right angle, and the remaining portion being bent around the portion containing the message and secured thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
IiOSCOE CONKLING OZMAN.
