Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. GENTHNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and'State ofV Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DraitRegulators for St0ve-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to heaters and has special reference to the draft regulating mechanism in the doors of stoves, ranges and furnaces.
The chief objects of my invention are to produce a simple and eliicient device for regulating the admission l of air to the iire boxes or ash-pits of heating stoves and furnaces; to provide means for producing and maintaining a practicallyair tight closure 'between the sliding and iixed members of a stove doorg' to produce a device for the purpose stated having means for retaining the parts in adjusted positions; and to furnish an operating member for dampers that can be readily actuated by means of either hand or toot, and also adapted to be moved by an intermediate tool such as a hook or poker commonly employed.
I accomplish the above results by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which:
`Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved draft regulator attached-to a stove door only a suihcient portion of the latter being illustrated to show the relation of the parts; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 17 and Fig. 4 is a detail, enlarged, of the slide retaining collar and post7 some of the parts being in section.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 5 indicates a stove ash-pit door supplied with the usual draft apertures 6 and furnished with a slide consisting of a plate 7 divided by transverse strengthening ribs 8, which are continuous with a marginal rib or ange 9, into a series of panels 10, the alternate panels being provided with openings 10m. The said plate is furnished with a horizontal slot 11 through which passes a post 12 firmly fixed in the door plate 5. The post carries a sleeve 13 which abuts against a head 14 formed on said post, and a conical collar 15, having a flange 16 through which the post passes. Between the flange 16 and the sleeve 13 is placed a coiled compression spring 17 which surrounds the post and exerts constant pressure between the fixed abutment or sleeve 13 and its movable abutment, the flange 16 of the collar 15.
The margins of the apertures 6 in the door plate 5 are slightly raised by ribs 18, and these ribs are milled or otherwise finished to form a plane seat for the movableV slide 7. In like manner the inner surface of said slide plate 7 is furnished with slightly projecting ribs 19, corresponding in location with the position of the ribs 18, and these ribs are likewise Iinished to form a tight joint when in opposition with the aforesaid ribs 18 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. 'It will be seen that the action of the spring 17 against the collar 15 will cause a certain amount of friction proportional to the strength of said spring and this friction will hold the slide at whatever point it may be placed in its lateral movement.
To actuate the slide I provide a lever 20 pivoted to the door plate 5 above the slide, by a bolt 2l. This lever passes downward over the slide and terminates in a rounded end 22 which curves outwardly away from the face of the door and is furnished with an orilice 23, Near the middle portion of the lever 20 is located a lug 24 preferably formed integral with the slide 7 which engages a longitudinal slot 25 in the said lever 70 and when the latter is moved laterally it will slide the plate 7 in the same direction by means of this lug. The outer end of the post 12 is received in a transverse slot 26 in the lever 20 and serves as a stop to limit the lateral motion of said lever.
In order to prevent a rotation of the slide plate 7 on its central point 12 two lugs 27 are provided which are placed below the margin of the plate 7 and on either side oi the median line, said lugs being preferably cast with the door plate.
It will be obvious that when the lever is thrown to the limit oi its excursion toward the left the closed panels l0 of the slide will coincide with the apertures 6 in the door plate 5 and as the contiguous surfaces are nished7 to give a tightit no air can pass through the 85 draft openings. When the lever is thrown wholly or partially to the right, however, the apertures 10l in the panels will register to a corresponding extent with the draft openings G and the action of the spring 17 will preserve the adjustment until the lever is again ac- 90 tuated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In a draft regulating device, a fixed plate having draft openings therein and provided with a stud, a shutter slidabiy mounted on said fixed plate and provided with draft openings, a horizontal slot and a stud, a lever pivotally mounted on the fixed plate and provided with a transverse slot receiving the stud on the fixed plate, and with a longitudinal slot fitting the stud on the shutter, and resilient means for holding the xed plate and the shutter in close frictional Contact.
