ROY E. GAINES, Uh DALE, INDIANA.
COMPUTING YARD-MEASURE.
Application filed September 19. 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rov E. GAINES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dale, in the county of Spcn cer and the State of Indians, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Computing Yard-Measures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for quickly and accurately computing the price per yard of goods sold by the yard, or of the amount of goods in yard lengths, or fractions thereof, to be sold for a certain amount at a predetermined price per yard.
lhe invention consists of the novel features of construction and combination oi parts hereinafter described pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the yard stick, partly broken out. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the yard stick showing the reverse side to that shown in Fig. l. is a fragmentary portion of the yard stick showing the movable slide thereon, the parts being in plan. Fig. 4 is a detail front face view of the slide. Fig. 5 is a. section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings A represents a yard stick having at one end a handle A", and having along its longitudinal edges and on each face a scale in inches and fractions of an inch as shown at B. On each face between the scales B are a. plurality of longitudinally extending lines C preferably nine in number dividing the faces of the yard stick into ten longitudinally extending spaces. Each of these spaces are divided into fractional parts as indicated by the transverse lines D.
I further provide a flat sleeve E which is adapted to slide upon the yard stick A. The end marginal portions of the sleeve E are notched or indented as shown at E, and longitudinally the edges of the sleeve E, on each face are divided into a. plurality of spaces E by suitable divisional lines. The central portion of the faces of the sleeves, between the marginal spaces E are divided by longitudinal and transverse lines into a plurality of spaces E in which numerals are imprinted as shown at E and it is further understood that any desired characters, numerals and signs are imprinted on the yard stick and sleeve as may be found desirable or necessary for the particular use to which the device is to be put, which characters, numerals and signs may vary in different instruments according to the class of business in which they are used as will be more fully set iorth in the explanation of the manner of using this invention. It will he noted from Fig. 3 that the recesses E of the slide E aline with the spaces formed upon the yard stick by the lines 0 and that the short perpendicular lines D can be brought into register with the said recesses by moving the slide backward and forward, and that the handle A facilitates the use of the slide at the right hand end of the yard stick A.
The operation of the device is as follows: Numerals in Specification of Letters Patent.
Fig. 3
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Serial No. 225,092.
the spaces E designate multiples of a ynrd, and the numerals in the spaces E designate prices [or one or more yards, the numcrols adjacent the recessed curls representing the prices of various grades or kinds of goods per yard, and the sccmul column from the left under the numeral 2 reprcscnt in; tluprice 01' two yards at the same rate per yard. The pcrpcmlicular lines D indicate one or more cents, reading from right tolcit, each fifth linc--iu the order named, being marked with suitable numerals to fucilimte reading. Assuming therefore that a certain piece oi goods is worth thirty cents per yard and a customer desires twenty-live cents worth of the goods at that price. By moving the slide E on the yard stick A until the recess E, in longitudinal alinement with the space E having the numerals thirty imprinted therein, registers with the line D marked 25 the corners oi the slide in n-liucment with the said line D will designate thirty as the number of inches of cloth to be given. In the smnc way if thirty inches of the cloth at thirty cents per yard had been d esired, the slide would have been moved to tliesame line and the price, twenty-five cents, would have been indicated. Should a customer desire fifteen cents worth of goods from a pier-o worth twenty cents per yard the proper rcccss E is moved until it registers with 15 on the yard stick and the length of the piece will be indicated as twenty-seven inches.
To prevent crowding the lines and numerals I orrange one side of the yard stick and slide to compute prices from five to fifty cents, and thc opposite side from iiity cents to one dollar, and a number of scrics of instruments may be provided each series computing prices between certain predetermined mics. This arrangement will be found ndvuntugruus in the (use uf department stores where the goods are classified. For example in u. ribbon dcpnrtmcut where the goods will range in price from a few cents to a dollar :1 yard stick and slide will be provided aid-opted for cmuputntions within that inngc, and in nllicr departments where other prices will prevail the slick A and slide E will have imprinted numerals ndapicd to compute at those prices, as it is immaterial \vliut arbitrary designations may be assigned to the various lines and spaces.
Having thus fully dcscrihc-d my invcntiou what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A computing yard measure comprising :1 yard stick has ing a linear scnlc thereon, a plurality of transverse lines on said stick having the requisite numerals to represent the fractional costs. and a slidnhlc, notched sleeve on said stick, the notches registering with the transverse lines, and the said sleeve hearing a plurality of numerals designating total cost, said numerals Mining with the notches.
