To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD ALFANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Sharpening Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in automatic honing apparatus for sharpening razors, and consists in the provision of means whereby a razor may be drawn backward and forward upon a hone and given a longitudinal movement as it passes in the arc of a circle over the sharpening surface, means being provided to turn the razor before the return stroke thereof upon the hon'e.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which v Figure l is a top plan view of my improved honing apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sectional shell which carries the razor. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the sectional shell in which the razor carrying shell is held and has a longitudinal movement, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the means for turning the razor when it approaches the end of the hone. Fig. 6 is a detailed view showing the positions in dotted lines that the razor carrying member assumes in reversing the razor. Fig. 7 is a detailed sectional view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of the apparatus having suitable tracks B between which the carriage C is held and adapted to reciprocate. Mounted upon the sprocket wheels D journaled in suitable bearings upon the frame is a sprocket chain E, and F designates a wheel, the spindle of which is mounted upon the carriage C, said wheel being adapted to rotate freely. Projecting from the wheel is a handle F which is fastened to one of the links of said chain and is designed to cause the carriage to make a reciprocating movement as the chain travels about said wheel, it being understood that said handle, when it approaches a wheel, passes with the chain about the circumference of the wheel and returns with the lower portion of the chain. Fixed to said carriage is the shell made up of the two sections G and G which are adapted to surround an inner sectional shell made up of the two parts H and H. The section H is provided with resilient fingers h, shown clearly in the detail View of the drawings, and between which fingers the handle K and the shank N of the razor are adapted to be held. The section H of said shell, which is hinged to the section H, is provided with a cushion 0 adapted to bear with sufficient friction against the edge of the handle of the razor to hold the same securely in place. Mounted within suitable bearings in the carriage is a reciprocating rod Q, one end of which has a yoke Q, the arms of which are adapted to surround the sectional shell which carries the razor and to grip the sections of said shell with sufficient force to cause the shell to move longitudinally with the reciprocating movements of said rod.
An inclined track M, diverging from its apex, is provided with angular flanges and a slot, through which slot the end of the rod Q passes, and Q is an anti-friction wheel journaled on the end of the rod Q and travels in said track and is retained in place by the flanges thereof.
Fixed to the shell section H is a regulator, designated by letter R, the arms of which are hinged together at R and corresponding ends of the arms of said regulator are fastened to the section H in the manner shown, while the arms S of said regulator, which are curved in the manner illustrated in the detail view of the drawings, are adapted to be spread by means of a screw '1 which bears against the upwardly curved arms S in the manner shown. diverging track or way M are the offsets or recesses J in which the end of the regulator is adapted to drop for the purpose of causing the razor to turn upon the return movement of the razor over the surface of the hone. As each of the outer ends of the track or way M is provided with a recess or depression, it will be noted that as the razor is reciprocated back and forth over the surface of the hone, the razor will be turned with its edge from the hone in readiness to be drawn back the entire length thereof.
In operation, power, either hand or otherwise, may be applied to the sprocket wheels, causing a continuous movement of the chain, and as the carriage is drawn by the chain, the latter will be caused to reciprocate back and forth between the tracks B. As the carriage moves forward, the rod Q will be given a reciprocating move ment by the inclined tracks or ways M, thereby giving the shell'sections H and H a reciprocating movement within the shell sections G and G, thus causing the razor blade to be given a sweep or stroke upon the arcof a circle as it is drawn over the surface of the hone. As the end of the regulator approaches and falls into the recess or depression at one end or the other of the way or'track M, the razor will be turned over with its edge swinging from the surface of the hone in readiness to be drawn back by the carriage upon its return movement. By adjusting the regulating device; the pressure at which the razor is held upon the surface of the hone may be regulated.
By the provision of the apparatus shown and described, it will be noted that a movement is afforded in Near the outer ends ef the the honing ot a razor quite identical to that imparted to the razor when the honing is done by hand and a true and even edge may be given to the razor.
What I claim is 1. An apparatus for honing razors comprising a frame, a movable carriage and suitable guideways therefor, sprocket Wheels mounted upon the frame, an endless chain passing about said wheels, a rotatable wheel mounted upon the carriage and having a handle fixed eccentrically thereto and connected to said chain and designed, as the chain travels about said wheels, to cause the carriage to reciprocate, razor holding means upon said carriage, and mechanism for imparting a reciprocating movement to the razor as it moves with the carriage, as set forth.
2. An apparatus for honing razors comprising a frame, a movable carriage and suitable guideways therefor, sprocket wheels mounted upon the frame. an endless chain passing about said wheels. a rotatable wheel mounted upon the carriage and having a handle fixed eccentrically thereto and connected to said chain and designed, as the chain travels about said wheels, to cause the carriage to reciprocate, razor holding means upon said carriage, mechanism for imparting a reciprocating movement to the razor as it moves with the carriage, and mechanism for turning the razor blade so that the rear edge thereof may be drawn forward against the surface of a hone, as set forth.

An apparatus for honing razors comprising a frame, a movable carriage and suitable guideways therefor, sprocket wheels mounted upon the frame. an endless chain passing about said wheels, a rotatable wheel mounted upon the carriage and having a handle fixed eccentrically thereto and connected to said chain and designed, as the chain travels about said wheels, to cause the carriage to reciprocate. razoi' holding means upon said carriage, a reciprocating member mounted upon the carriage and having a yoke, the arms of which frictionally engage the razor holding member, an antifriction wheel carried by said member. and an inclined way in which said anti-friction roller is adapted to travel, whereby, as the carriage is reciprocated, the razor may be given a reciprocating move ment against the surface of a hone. as set forth.

An apparatus for Ironing razors comprising a frame, i a movable carriage and suitable guideways therefor. sprocket wheels mounted upon the frame, an endless I chain passing about said wheels, a rotatable wheel mounted upon the carriage and having a handle fixed eccentrically thereto and connected to said chain and designed, as the chain travels about said wheels, to cause the car- 1 riage to reciprocate, razor holding means upon said carriage, a reciprocating member mounted upon the carriage and having a yoke, the arms of which frictionally engage the razor holding member, an antifriction wheel carried by said member, an inclined way in which said anti-friction roller is adapted to travel, whereby, as the carriage is reciprocated, the razor may be given a reciprocating movement against the surface of a hone, means for turn ing the razor, and mechanism for regulating the pressure at which the razor is adapted to bear against the surface of a hone, as set forth.
(3, An apparatus for honing razors comprising, in combination with a frame, a carriage adapted to reciprocate in suitable guideways, means for moving the carriage, a sec tional shell holder mounted upon the carriage. a two-part reciprocating razor ing shell mounted within the hinged shell, a longitudinally movable rod mounted upon the carriage and having a laterally projecting yoke adapted to frictionally engage the razor carrying shell, a diverging flanged way, means connected to said rod and traveling in said way as the carriage is moved backward and forward, thereby giving a reciprocating movement to the razor, and means for turning the razor as the carriage approaches its outer limit in opposite directions, as set forth. 7
