HENRY GRENON, OF NEW' HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
RAZOR-STROPPING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,867, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed April 19, 1895. Serial No. 546,330. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GRENON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New Haven, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Razor-Strapping Devices, which is fully set forth in the following specification, together with the drawings which form a part thereof, and in which like letters ofreference represent like parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the razorstropping device with the razor attached; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the frame, showing the carrier in elevation; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the frame and carrier; Fig. 4, an elevation of the razor-holder with one side of the blade-holder broken away; Fig. 5, a side elevation of one side of the carrier.
The object of this invention is to make a razor-stropping device for handling a razor while stropping the same and allowing the razor to automatically turn on its back when the motion of the handling device is reversed.
-The rectangular frame A made of steel or other suitable material, has a handle a at one end and a swivel loop or eye a at its other end, fastened in any well-known manner. Mortises B and B extending longitudinally are formed on both sides of the frame at one end thereof. Rollers C and C are affixed on the inside of the frame A and near the ends of and transversely with said frame, over which rollers extends the endless strop E. The axle c on which the roller C rotates is journaled in the sides of the frame A near the swivel end thereof. The axle c on which the roller C rotatesis journaled in the blocks D and D, which fit in the mortises B and B and have longitudinal play therein. Attached to blocks D and D are screws extending longitudinally in said mortises and through the end of the frame A at the point d and d and having screw-nuts d and d for the purpose of adjusting said blocks and rollers C attached thereto, so as" to tighten or loosen the strop E as may become necessary. The axles c and c extend beyond said frame and are held in position by screw-nuts c and c. p
The travelers F and F are constructed with a longitudinal recess f and a vertical recess f, constructed with two flanges f and f extending toward each other, forming the grooves f and f. The travelers F and F are thus adapted to fit over and embrace the sides of the frame A to move longitudinally on the frame A. The, carrier G with an end 9, to which is attached a handle 9 and the sides g and g said sides passing through the recesses f of the travelers F and F and are embraced thereby, allowing the carrier G to be moved vertically in said travelers. A blade-holder H, having its two sides inclined toward each other, is secured to a metal rod h passing through the sides of the carrier G. A cog-wheel I is attached near one end of the rod it within the carrier. The opposite end of said rod extends beyond the carrier a sufficient length to allow a spring-clamp to be attached to said rod for the purpose of holding the handle of the razor in place. A curved metal spring J in the blade-holder is attached thereto and secures the blade of the razor firmly in place in the blade-holder and adapts it for using various sizes of razors.
A friction-roller K on an axle k journaled to the sides of the carrier Ghas connected rigidly therewith a gear-wheel It which meshes with the wheel I. The gear-wheel k is partially broken away at k and 10 so that the lower face of the teeth at k and k is adapted to come in contact with the end of the carrier G and limit the rotation of the frictionroller K to the arc of the circle of the gearwheel is. A thumb-screw L, having a limited vertical play in the slot g in the side of the carrier G, is adapted to adjust the carrier so that the roller K may be adjusted to properly rest 011 the strop.
The operation of the device is as follows: The razor-blade is inserted in the bladeholder, being held in place by the spring and the handle inserted in the springclamp. Upon the forward movement of the carrier by means of the handle, which at the same time is drawn slightly downward, the friction-roller bearing against the lower part of the strop by the means of the gearing k and I turns the blade-holder, bringing the razorblade in contact with the strop. The gear- Wheel k broken away at k and k and the thumb-screw L limit the pressure of the razor-blade upon the strop. Upon the reverse movement of the carrier the friction-roller is rotated in the opposite direction, and by means of the gearing the blade-holder automatically reversed to bring the opposite side of the razor-blade in contact with the strep.
Having now described my invention, What I claim is 1. In a razor-stropping device, the combination of a frame, a strep in said frame, travelers connected to said frame and capable of longitudinal movement; a carrier mounted in said travelers and capable of vertical movement, a blade-holder attached to said carrier and mechanism for operating said bladeholder upon the longitudinal movement of said travelers, substantially as described.
2. In a razor-stropping device, the combination of a frame; a strop held in said frame; travelers connected to said frame and capable of longitiulinalmotion; a carrier embraced in said travelers and capable of vertical movement; a blade-holder attached to said carrier; a friction-roller affixed to said carrier and adapted to bear on said strep; and gearing connecting said friction-pulley with said blade-holder, substantially as described.
and friction-roller mounted in said carrier;
and a gear-wheel connected with said frictionroller meshing with a gear-wheel connected to said blade-holder and having shoulders adapted to limit the rotary movement of said friction-roller, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set in y hand this 16th day of April, 1895.
HENRY GREN'ON. Witnesses:
