To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNIE S. EDwAnDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Hall, in the county of Greene and State oi Illinois, have invented a new and uselul Gate, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates.
The object oi the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and ellicient device of this character particularly designed i'or use as a farm gate, and capable oi being moved to open position from either side of a roadway.
A iurther object of the invention is to provide means for elevating the ree end oi the gate and adjusting the latter vertically to permit lree swinging movement of the same when moved to open and closed positions and also to permit the passage of small stock beneath the gate.
A still further object is to generally improve this class of devices so as to add to their utility and durability as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement ol parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that various changes in iorm, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope ol the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification. Figure l is a side elevation of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a modified form oi the invention. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view ol Fig. l.
Similar numerals of reierence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The device consists of a pair ot spaced gate posts 5 and G mounted in any suitable manner on opposite sides oi' a roadway and preferably connected with a line ol fencing. The improved gate is mounted lor horizontal swinging movement between the posts 5 and G and comprises vertical end bars 7 and 8 to which are pivoted by bolts 9 a plurality ol spaced longitudinal bars l0, the latter being reinforced by a diagonal brace ll pivoted to the lower end ol the rear bar 7, as shown. Pivoted to the upper end oi the bar 7 is a short diagonal brace 'l2 the opposite end oi which is pivoted to the brace ll by means oi a bolt 13 which passes through an elongated slot 14, there being a similar slot 15 formed in the ree end oi the brace l1 for the reception ot' a bolt 16 secured to the adjacent longitudinal bar l0. The bolts 13 and I6 are provided with wing nuts 17 which bear against suitable wear plates or washers 19 and serve to clamp the diagonal braces in Contact with the longitudinal bars of the gate. By having the gate formed in this manner the free end thereof may be adjusted vertically to permit the gate to clear any obstruction on the road bed when said gate is moved to open and closed positions and also to permit the lower edge of the gate to conl'orm to the inclination of the ground when the latter' is erected on the side ot a hill.
Extending laterally from the post 5 are spaced loops or eyes 20 adapted to receive a vertical rod or bar 21, and secured to the adjacent end oi the gate are metal straps 22 which embrace the rod 2l and form the pivotal axis of the gate.
Slidably mounted between two ol the longitudinal bars 10 at the iree end of the gate is a latch 23 adapted to enter a vertical slot 24 formed by a keeper 25, the latter being secured to the post 6 with its intermediate portion spaced from said post so as to permit free vertical movement oi the latch within the recess or slot 24 when the gate is adjusted vertically to allow the passage ot small stock beneath the same.
The latch 23 is provided with lateral stop pins 25 and 2G which engage suitable stop plates 26/ pivoted to the bars 10 and serve to limit the longitudinal movement of the latch, one oi the pins 25 also engaging a vertical brace 27 pivoted to the bars l0 between the vertical end bars, as shown.
Riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the upper longitudinal bar l() ol the gate are a pair ot brackets 28 which embrace the eye 29 of the upper strap hinge 22 and are bolted or .riveted together at 30. The free ends of the brackets 2S are extended above the end of the post 5 and bent laterally to l'orm supporting arms 31 for an operating cord or cable 32 which passes through suitable eyes 33 in said arms and is connected to the sliding latch 23 so that by exerting a longitudinal pull on either end of the cord 32 the latch will be withdrawn from its keeper and the gate swung to open position.
The bar or rod 2l is iormed with one or more openings 34 adapted to receive a pin 35 to assist in supporting the gate in elevated position.
vIn operation when it is desired to support the free end ol the gate in elevated position the wing nuts 17 are released and the adjustment eliected by elevating the i'ree end of said gate and subsequently clamping the nuts, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. of the drawings. To support the gate in position to permit the passage of small stock beneath the same the entire gate is elevated to the desired height and locked in position by inserting the pin 35 in one ol the openings in the rod or bar.
Ii desired the eyes or loops 20 may be attached at one corner of the post 5 so that the gate may be swung to open position against the adjacent line of lencing and thereby offer an unobstructed opening for the passage of cattle.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings there is illustrated a modified form ot the invention in which the braces 36 ex tend diagonally across opposite sides oi the gate and intersect the intermediate vertical brace 37, as shown, the construction ot' the gate being otherwise the same as that shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:HH
l. A gate comprising longitudinal bars pivotally connected to end bars, a diagonal brace pivoted to the lower end ci' one of the end bars and provided with terminal and intermediate slots, a brace pivoted to the upper portion oi said end bar and intersecting the diagonal brace, and fastening devices passing through said slots and engaging the brace and one ot' the longitudinal bars, respectively.
2. 'lhe combination with the gate posts, of a gate pivoted to one o1' the posts and vertically adjustable between the latter', said gate being formed of longitudinal bars pivoted to the end bars and connected by intersect ingl diagonal braces capable or' sliding movement with respect to said longitudinal bars and also with respect to each other, a keeper' secured to the opposite post, a latch slid-ably mounted between adjacent longitudinal bars ot' the gate and adapted to engage the keeper, and stops carried by the latch for limiting the longitudinal movement thereof.
3. The combination with the gate posts, eyes secured to one ot said posts, a rod engaging said eyes, and a gate mounted for swinging movement between the posts and having strap hinges secured to the opposite sides of the gate and embracing the rod, reinforcing straps engaging the hinges on each side of the gate and having their intermediate portions embracing the rod and secured to gethcr and their free ends bent upwardly and laterally ior attachment to an operating cord, a keeper secured to the opposite post, a latch slid-ably mounted on the gate and engaging the keeper', and means for supporting the gate in elevated position.

The combination with the gate posts, eyes secured to one ot the gate posts, a rod engaging said eyes, a vertically adjustable gate mounted for horizontal swinging movement between said posts, strap hinges Secured to the gate on both sides thereof and embracing the rod, a keeper' secured to the opposite post, a latch slidably mounted on the gate for engagement with the keeper, and 1ein forcing straps secured to the hinges on each side of the latter' and having their intermediate portions embracing the rod and their free ends extended upwardly and laterally for attachment to an operating cord.
