apprese@ ne@ 'ray 22.1907. semi No. 375,132.
` ,order thatfthe'obj ect o f this invention may be bet` 1 0 ter apprediated, it' will be stated that wooden boxand gondola caratfrequently have their-ends and a portion" inf their sideebrolenand torn out frein various causes 'the-impact resulting fromthe shift- .sisefheavr. 1.5 thereby requiringmore or'less rebuilding of the body of .-th'eoar before the'same-is available for use.; and as itis customary Q -unite: the ends of lsuch cars to the sides'by l means of angle i1'o/'gi1secured-inposition by boltswhich are tomloosoghy the destruction of the carends, the ad' 2 0 jaeent of the sides are generally so badly finas mbe no longer serviceable or strong enough to new ends to be-secured thereto, the result' ,of which is, that frequently the sides-of the car require readditional loss, bothof time "and money in repairing a Experience has also shown that where. cars of' this type are to 4be used for heavy, easily shiftable freight,v the employment ot'my improved -device will so strengthen the ends of the car that the danger ofthe ends of the car being-broken or destroyed in ordinary use ispracticallyeliminated.4 i i 'Tlr'efdbject of this invention therefore, lis to provide a device by which theends of car bodies may be either so reinforced'in the first place,4 as to prevent their'. de-
used to readily repair .thesame if already broken. A 'Various other advantages constituting objectsI of 4this invention-will more fully appear in the subjoined descriptionofthe device.l v l y ,40 -A practical embodiment of this device is shown in the 'accompanying drawings, 'in'whi'ch similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures. I n the drawingaFigure 1 isaperspe'ctive view of my improved device detached i'olna'car; and', Fig. 2 a per. spective view of my improved device inpositionon the endofacar. -4 The dev-ice herein described is customarily conv structed of metal of great strength having sufficient inalleability to'be'fornied into the peculiar shape, which it isrequir'ed to assume, morder to adapt itself to thev usesor which it is intended; and it consists ofa main portion, dcsignated'in the drawings by the reference numeral 1., preferably constructed of sheet metal hav,-
ing an uprightportion 2 with lateral wings 3, 3, prefer- 2.55 ably bent at right angles to the portion 2. The upper edges of the lateral wings 3 are preferably ight r'tih'-which the cars are loaded,
placement as well as the ends, thus incurring great struction under ordinary circumstances, or it may be' as shown inthe drawings. The lower end of the prtioii 2 is preferably bent outwardly to constitute a foot 4 at approximately right angles to the main portion 1. This foot portion 4 is not absolutely essential, but is a preferred form of construction.l Theuprig'hftiportion 2 and lateral wings 3 are"provided with a plurality-of openings "5 4through 'which holdfa/st4 devicesinayI be passed for securing the4 entire device to the end efa'car;
The foregoing description describes my device when.
is intended to be used vupon cars in which there is no projecting flooring, ,or no sillextending beyond the body portion of the car; but if the device is to be used'on a car ,in Whichthe end silll or the end sill and flooring of the carl are arranged to .project beyond the end of the car body, 4I employ an auxiliary or supplemental device consistngof a cross-piecel Garranged to-extend across the faceof the endsill and cover the same; and this is further provided .with-right angularly-formed wings 7 designed` to be secured by means of bolts. 9 passed 4through suitableopenings in thewings 7. "f
In using this device wherev the ends of a 'cartsuchas is shown in 2) has been torn loose and possibly the ends of the sides thereof so shattered that they are not sufficiently strong t o properly retain. a. second end piece in position between them, a new end'picc'e is placed in position on the car conforming in all respects tothe one which' it' replaces, andthe device shown in Fig.1 is
then placed on the endof thecar in the manner shown in Fig. "Zand secured td the carsides by a plurality of bolts ll and to the 'car'end by means of bolts l2, It
will be frequently found necessaryto cut-away the portions of the -ooring'designated bythe reference numeral 13, which project over the longitudinal sills 14 sulficiently to make the Wings 3 of the device properly contact with both the sides l5 and sills'14, thereby ,per'
mittingthe use of bolts, referred to in the drawings by the reference numeral 16, in securing the device to the 'longitudinal sills, thereby strengthening the engage-- Y. ment of the device with .the entire car frame.
lt will be further noted that when the deviceis in the position4 shown in liig. 2 the cross piece will inclose the end sill (not shqwn); AI f desired, bolts 17 may be vemployed for further strengthening the union of the device withfthe car' by being passed throught-he flange' i vand end sill. Y This flange4 also serves as a cover anda protection for the i'loor'and sill of the car projectingbeyond the ends. 'Although not shown, a cushioning strip may be secured to the ,frontface of the' cross piece 6 and ordinary bumpers mounted thereon, if desired; .but as the mounting of these bumpers is well known in the'art, an illustration and further descriptionl of them is believed to be unnecessary. 1
i In constructing thedevice it will be preferably made foia heightsulcient to extendfrom the under face .of--
'the longitudinal of the ca r'to'the plane of the, top o f the-Carbody when employed'upon .s uch cars as'areillustrated in Fig. 2, thereby strengthening the entire structure of the end of the car by providing means whereby the entire end of the'car may be directly rein forced by the securing ofthe device to the longitudinal sills, which is not usually possiblev where the ordinary devices are employed7 they, on the Contrary, furnishing vice. This device'urther provides means whereby ordinary Wooden box cars may be iurni'shed and supplied with metallic ends to 'strengthen them aga-inst shiitable heavy freight and possible collision,
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,A
