MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal End Structures for Railway-Gars, of which the,
following is a specification.
My-invention relates to metal end structuresfor railway cars, and has as its object the provision of certain improvements in sheet metal structures for railway cars that will not be subject to the present diiliculties in manufacturing sheet metal end structures and one in which the durability and strength for resisting the various stresses to the aleove character are subjected will be increased.
More specifically, it is the object of the invention to provide a corrugated end structurethat will presentcertain economic advantages of manufacture over the types of against the car it necessary, to fit the car ,are pressed, while in the latter case corrugated end structures in which the ends of the corrugations terminate within the edges of the end sheets and also have structural features which will increase its strength ,for resistance against the thrusts of the cargo end, caused by the sudden of the car. The sheets 25 and 26 may be secured together in any suitable manner, for example, by the lap joint 47 in which the upper sheet overlaps the lower sheet and forms a stiffening strip across the end. To further strengthen the end at the point of j'ointure of the sheets I preferably provide a girth member 48 which is provided with a corrugation 49 similar to the one shown on the reinforcing-member or top girth 35. Both of the flanges 50, 51 of the girth 48 are corrugated so as to fit into the corrugations 27 of the upper sheet 25, the angular flanges 52, extending around the corner of the car, are secured thereto .by the bolts 32 which extend through both flanges 29, 30 of the end sheetsfandthrough the corner post. At the lower edge of the car end I preferably provide another transverse reinforcing member or' girth 53 provided with angular flanges 54 secured to the corner post and with a strengthening rib 55. The lower web 56 of the strengthening rib preferably extends between the flooring 57 and the end sill 58 and is secured to the latter by bolts 59. The upper web 60 of the rib 55 is formed'with a flange 61 which is provided with corrugations adapted to fit over the corrugations 28 of the lower end sheet 26 and is secured thereto by rivets 62 which are spaced close enough together to provide a water-tight joint. This structure strengthens the corner of the car and by having the corrugations terminating as shown prevents the rain and dirt from being driven into the corrugations, which would corrode and weaken the -members in which these are pressed.
While I have illustrated my invention in certain preferred embodiments, it will be understoo that further modifications might be made, within the scope of the claims herein, without departure from the spirit of .the invention.

A sheet metal end structure for a railway car comprising a plurality of end of parallel members arranged between the sheets and at the edges thereof for connecting the same together and to the car, said end sheets being formed with corrugations and the parallel members with corrugations extending transversely to the corrugations of the sheet.

In a railwa box car the combination with the side w; s of the car, of a wooden end plate, a metal s'tifi'eni'ng member secured to said end plate, extending across the car from side to side, anchored to the side walls of the car and formed with a corrugation extending lengthwise ofthe same and a fascia plate conformed to the slope of the roof and I overlapping the upper flange of said metal stiffening member.

The combin tion with the side walls, end sill and flooring of a railway car, of a metal end sheet and ametal stiffening member extending across the car from side to side, secured to the side walls of the car and to the lower edge of said end sheet, and formed with a corrugation extending length wise of the same and with a flange which intervenes between the flooring of the car and the end sill and is secured to the latter.

The combination with the under frame and side walls of a railway box car, of an end plate comprising a metal member ex tending across the car from side to side, anchored to the side walls thereof and formed with a rigidifying element projecting from the plane of said member, a transverse metal member extending across the car from side to side adjacent the under frame, anchored to the side walls of the car and formed with a rigidifyingr element projecting from the plane of said member, and a sheet metal end wall structure extending between and se-- cured at'its edges to said stiffening members at the top and bottom of the car, and to the vertical corrugations.
