Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
WILLIAM -H. ROBERTS, oF DETROIT, MIcHIeAN,-AssIGNoR To MICHIGAN.
D. H.` ROBERTS, OF DETROIT,
VALVE I j Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1907.
Application filed October 30,1905. Serial No. 285,103.
'lhe invention relates particularly toa gas valve espe- 4cially designed for use in connection with gas stoves or ranges and consists in the peculiar construction of the valve, and, ffurther, in the novel arrangement and combination of its parts as morefully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure lis a vertical central section through the valve.;I Fig. 2 is a view in elevation thereof;
`and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view, showing the parts in a position diffgrent than illustrated in Fig. I. 4
A represents thewvalve casing, open at both ends as indicated and provided with a threaded nipple B adapted to be attached to the gas supply conduit and to form the means oi communication between the latter and the valve interior. The opening in the casing is preferably tapered and therear portion oi the casing is slightly re' duced and 'externally screw-threaded and the threaded portion is recessed or cut away, as at D, for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. I
E represents a tapered cock fitting within the tapering opening in the casing, extending preferably flush with the discharge end oi the casing and terminating at its opposite end in a handle section F, projecting some distance beyond the casing. The extreniity oi the handle portion is squared, as at G, -to receive a suitable handle, as H, in this instance a Wheel having an opening extending therethrough lcorresponding in form to the squared portion.
A relatively large reservoir or chamber I'is formed in the cock extending from a point above the nipple B- throughou't its forward portion and terminating in a restricted discharge openingJ charge end is formed'by a jet nozzle K threaded within the discharge end of the4 cock and having a conical portion L immediately adjacent the discharge end, forming a seat for the' valve M. l O represents a gas inlet formed in the cock adapted to be brought into and .out of registration with the nipple B upon the turning ofthe crock to permit of the discharge of the gas -through the valve. y
P represents a bore leading from the chamber I in the cock outwardly through the rear portion of the latter,
. or close the latter, as desired.
In this instance, the dis-- said bore being threaded internally to receive a threaded plug Q which carries the needle valve M. This lat' ter plug is adapted'to project beyond the handle section of the cock and is provided with a cross slot= as R, by means of which, through suitable implement, the valve may be turned to throw it in proximity to or away from its seat, for the purpose of controlling the discharge of the gas. f
S represents a cap adapted to be threaded upon the extremity of the handle `section of the cock and serves' as a protector for the end of the plug Q' and as a lock for the handle, the capl bearing against the handle and clamping the latter against a shoulder T upon the cock formed for that purpose. i v i The tapered cock is held in contact with the walls of the casingv by means of a lcap or coupler U, which engag'es the threaded section C on the casing and a split spring washer V interposed between the end oi the'cap and a shoulder W upon the cock, the shoulder being preferably at some distance from the end of the thread-v ed section C, so as to allow for wear between the plug and the valve casing. A f l X represents a pin fixed upon the cock adapted to turn within the recess D, the recess being so proportioned as to permit theturning of the cock a suflicient ldistance to bring the gas inlet O into and out of registration with the threaded nipple, so as to open the valve From the description of the valve, the operation will be apparent and requires no further explanation. Attention is directed to the fact that by meansof the cap -U and the split spring Washer, a simple and eiiicient What I claim as my invention is 1. In a valve, the combination with a valve casing provided with an inlet and having a threaded extension at one end, of a longitudinally bored plug valve seated in the casing and having an inlet arranged to communicate with said casing inlet, one end ot said valve projecting and having a shoulder outside of said casing, a coupler sleved on the projecting` end of said plug and engaging the -threaded extension o! said casing, a resilient member sleeved on said plug. and engaged by said shoulder and said coupler, a
-tion between said passage and the casing inlet, a needle Witnesses:
needle valve in said plug valve and a hand operated member for adjusting said plug valve, for the purpose described.
2. In a valve, the combination with a valve casing provided with an inlet, of a plug valve seated within the casing and extending outside thereof having a discharge pnssnge and an inlet port adapted to establish communicaward extension thereof, and a cap covering the end of the 10 needle valve and having a screw threaded engagement with the plug extension for retaining said operating member.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
