CHARLES F. BERESFORD, OF PORT HURON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH H. CARRIGAN, OF PORT HURON,
MICHIGAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
FAUCET.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. BERESFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in faucets of the turning-plug type.
'It has for its object to provide for the drawing or turning on either cold or hot water or both cold and hot water simultaneously, as may be desired, also to effect the same by the use of a single plug or valve, and consequently by a continuous operation, and to greatly simplify the construction of the parts and to carry out these ends with facility and convenience.
Said invention consists of certain structural features, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side view thereof. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig 3 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section thereof. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the turning plug or valve; and Fig. 6 is a like view of thesame part, said views being taken from opposite points thereof. Fig. '7 is a detail front elevation showing the stud or projection upon the turning plug and the reduction' in one edge of the socket extension receiving said stud for hmiting the axial movement of said plug.
In the carrying out of my invention I employ the usual nozzle or head 1, except it is provided with duplicate passages or ways 1 1, arranged one about in alinementv with the other and converging more or less to cause as more clearly presently disclosed. Said turning plug or valve proper, 2, somewhat conical in general outline, is suitably seated underthe action of a spring 2", housed within the socket extension 1 and held therein by a cap 3, screwed upon the latter, presently again referred to, said turning plug having a lateral stud or projection 2 resting within a reduction 1 of one edge of the socket extension 1 for limiting the turning of said valve. Said plug is provided with two ports 2' 2 opening laterally therethrough and terminating in or communicating with a relatively 'enlarged opening or port 2, also laterally opening through said plug, but oppositely. Said ports 2 2 are caused to inwardly converge toward each other and to merge about in the longitudinal center of the plug 2, with the common port 2 opening out through the opposite surface of said plug. Said ports 2 2' themselves have their divergent or receiving ends spaced or arranged a suitable interval apart, while each is opposed to the other for a certain portion of its longitudinal area, with the remaining portions of their said areas extending laterally one beyond the other in opposite directions. Said ports 2? 2 are thus enabled by suitably turning the valve to communicate simultaneously with both of the passages 1" 1 of the nozzle or head 1, while the port 2 is permitted to communicate with the outlet 1 or either of the aforesaid ports be separately brought into communication with either of the passages 1 1 in the nozzle-head 1, while the port 2 is alined with said outlet.
,From this arrangement it is noted that water passing through both of said passages 1 l which may be cold and hot, respectively, may be delivered by actuating a single valve out through a commonoutlet and that either hot or cold water may be separately drawn off in the usual way at said outletby suitably actuating the valve. Said valve or plug has its stem passing through the cap 3, before noted, and to an angular surface of said stem and beyond said cap is applied a lever or handle 4: for conveniently actuating the valve by hand. The amount of movement required to be imparted to the valve through the actuation of said handle or lever, according to the kind of water wanted, including the admixture of cold and hot water, simply requires the exercise of the judgment, as will be readily appreciated.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as
of said plug, with the latter port, said former ports being arranged a suitable interval apart one each opposed to the other for a certain portion of its longitudinal area, with the remaining portions of their said areas extending laterally one beyond the other in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
