To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES MAUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invcn ted a new and useful Attachment for Horseshoes, of which thefollowim is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for horse shoes for use in the winter time to prevent slipping upon snow or ice, and has for its object to simplify an d improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will ap pear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construc tion hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without dcparti ng from the principle of the invention or sacri lici n any of its advantages.
In the drawings thus employedz Figure 1 is a perspective view from above, of a horse shoe with the im proved attachment applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, inverted, oi the improved attachment.
The improved device comprises a member 10 of Y- shape and a member 11 of T-shape with their shanks overlapping and provided with longitudinal slots 12-i|3 through which a clamp bolt 14 operates and provided with a clamp nut 15.
The terminals of the Y-shaped member 10 are bent into clips ].[-17 for bearing against the toe portion of the horse shoe represented at 18 and clenched over tl top of the same as shown in Fig. 1, and the terminals of the Tshapcd member 11 are likewise provided with clips iii--20 for hearing against the outer faces of the heel portions of the horse shoe and clenched over the top of the same. -l3y this simple means it is obvious that the two parts l0 and 1]. may be firmly clamped to the horse shoe and irremovablc therefrom unless the bolt i l-15 be released.
Formed in the outer ends of the member 10 are V- shaped clci'ts providing integral tongues 2122 which when bent at right angles to the member ll) form ice and snow engaging spurs or calks, and similar Vshaped clel'ts are formed in the member 11 whereby similar spurs or calks 23-24l are formed adjacent to the heel portion of the device.
he members 10 and 11. are each struck from a single piece of sheet or plate metal and bent into the required shape by suitable dies, and can therefore be inexpensively manufactured, and will be very strong and durable.
The device can be readily adapted to all the various sizes and forms of horse shoes in use, and can be quickly attached-and detached, as required, and when worn or broken can be renewed at small expense.
Having thus descrilmd the invention, what is claimed is:
1. An attachment for horse shoes, comprising a Y- shaped toe member having upwardly cxtending clips at the forward ends for engaging the toe portion 01: the horse shoe and with downwardly extending spurs adjacent to the toe clip portions, a Tshnpcd heel member having upwardly extending clips for respectively engaging the heel portions of 1 horse shoe and with downwardly extending spurs adjacent to said heel clip portions with the shank portions of said mmnbcrs for overlapping beneath the shoe, and means for adjustably clamping said overlapping portions.
2. An attachment for horse shoes, comprising a Y- shnpcd toe member having upwardly extending clips at the forward ends for engaging the toe portion of the horse shoe and with downwardly extending spurs adjacent to the toe clip portions, a T-slmpcd hccl member having upwardly ex ending clips for respectively engagilrr the heel portions 1 horse shoe and with downwardly extending spurs adjacent to said hool clip portions with the shank portions 01: said members for overlapping beneath the shoe, and provided with long tudinal slots, a clamp bolt operating through said slots.
