fitter/nag UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GEORGE A. LAYBOURN, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
BREEDING-CRATE.
Application tiled December l, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LAYBOURN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Breeding- Crates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to breeding crates for hogs, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple and efficient means for adjusting the various parts quickly and by means of a single lever.
Another object of the invention is to provide a crate ol simple construction which will be safe, economical and efficient in use, and which can be produced at comparatively slight cost.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a breeding crate made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of a double crank rever for adjusting the foot rests.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral l designates the longitudinal bars of the crate, and 2 are the upright bars at the rear end of the crate. The longitudinal bars I are provided with a diagonal brace 3 which extends from the bottom of the rear portion to the inclined l'ront bars 4. The floor 5 is supported on sills 6. A door 7 is hinged to the front portion of the crate upon a crank rod S provided with a lever 9 at one side of the crate for holding the door 7 in an inclined position when open, said lever 9 being adjustable by means of perlorations I() and a removable pin Il in order that the door may be raised or lowered at its hinged end so that when the loot boards I5 are adjusted downwardly, the front ends of said boards will lie in the same plane as the rear or hinged end of the door 7 so that the animal will walk from the door 7 upon the foot rests l5. A lid or cover l2 is hinged at I3 to a cross board I4 at the top of the crate. Pivoted upon the uprights 2 at the rear end of the crate are foot rests I5. N ear the front ends of the foot rests and underneath the same are connected Speeiication of Letters Patent.
l Patented Aug. 20, 1907. Serial No. 345,948.
i l l I l l l l links 16 and at the lower ends of said links the same are connected to a double crank lever I7, the crank portions I8 of which extend at right angles to the main portion oi the lever. The ends of lsaid lever I7 are pivoted in the bottom side boards 19, and the end of said lever I7 is squared, as at 20, to accommodate an operating handle 2l fitted to the squared end. A series of pel'- t'orations 22 are formed in the board 19 and a suitable pin is fitted in said perforation to hold the operating handle 2l in adjusted position. The central portion of the crank lever I7 extends under a central longitudinal spreader board 23, pivoted at 24 to the rear uprights 2. The spreader board 23 near its front end is provided with a keeper' a, and passing through said keeper is the crank portion b of a crank lever c pivoted at its ends in the longitudinal bars I9 of the crate. When it is required to adjust the spreader board 23, the arms d of the lever c are grasped and moved toward the front or rear of the crate.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a device constructed in accordance with my invention is simple in construction, Can be quickly adjusted by means of the levers 2l, 9 and c, and that the device is strong, durable and efiicient for its purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. In a breeding,- crate, a door hinged to the front end of the crate provided with a lever for adjusting said door vertically at its inner' end, a pair o1.' foot rests pivotally connected to tlie rear end of the crate, a crank lever pivoted at its ends to the crate and connected by links to said foot rests, a spreader board, and a crank lever connected to said spreader board.
2. In a breedingl crate, a pair o1 foot rests, a double crank lever', links connecting said lever to said foot boards, a spreader board, a lever i'or adjustingl said spreader board, a crank lever, and a door' connected to said crank level' for raising the hinged end of said door relatively to the foot rests, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, l allix my signature in presence of t\vo witnesses.
GEORGE A. LAYBOURN.
