Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMEs B. HOFFMAN, residing in Foxlake, in the county of Dodge and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plow'share-Tongs, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

This invention has for its object to provide tongs which will securely hold a plow-share for sharpening, pointing or welding.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the plow-share tongs herein claimed, and all equivalents.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the same parts in the several views: Figure 1 is an elevation of a plow-share tongs constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in position on a plow-share; Fig.

2 is a plan view thereof removed from the plow-share; and, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the jaws thereof.

In these drawings 5 represents the land-side plate of a land-side plow-share 6. The tongs comprise the usual pair of handle members 7 which are pivoted together at 8 where they cross each other at nearly right angles after a sharp upward bend of the lower handle member to form an abutting shoulder 9. The jaw produced at the end of this member is bent downwardly and at an incline as shown in Fig. 3 to fit upon the inclined upper surface of the plow-share where it recedes from the vertical land-side plate. This jaw member will be referred to as the upper jaw member 10 and is practically straight but flattened so as to extend laterally from the handle member as shown in Fig. 2. The other handle member 7 bends sharply downward just beyond the pivot 8 to form a flat check 11 to fit against the vertical land-side of the plow-share, its lower end being bent to one side so as to pass beneath the land-side plate and then extending upwardly at an incline to form a V-shaped hook 12 to secin'ely engage the land-side plate.

When the tongs are to be engaged with the plowshare the hook 12 is placed beneath the land-side plate with the cheek 11 fitting flat against the landside thereof and then the handle members are brought together to swing the straight jaw 10 down on top of the inclined upper surface of the plow-share so that the straight jaw lies fiat against this upper surface in both the forward incline and the lateral incline thereof. When the handle members are forced together the land-side plate of the plow-share is rigidly clamped between the jaws 10 and 12, the shoulder 9 preventing the plow-share slipping rearwardly and the forward incline of the straight jaw with the wedge shape of the land-side plate preventing its slipping forwardly, the cheek ll preventing the movement of the plow-share toward one side and the hook l2 and the lateral incline of the straight jaw 10 preventing movement of the plow-share to the other side. Thus the plow-share may be securely held in the tongs during the sharpening or pointing or welding operations without danger of its slipping.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A plow-share tongs, comprising a pair of handle members pivoted together, one handle member being bent to produce an abutting shoulder with a downwardly inclined straight upper jaw thereon having a lateral ineli nation, the other handle member being downwardly bent to form a flat cheek beyond the pivot with its lower end bent upwardly to form a V-shaped hook for engaging the bottom edge of the land-side plate of a plow-share, said cheek being adapted to fit against the land-side of the plow-share, the abutting shoulder being adapted to engage the rear end of the land-side plate, and the straight jaw being adapted to fit against the upper inclined surface of the plow-share.
