Description

No. 863,721. PATENTED AUG. 20, 1 907. B. H. KANNBNBERG. FRICTION TOP GAN.
APPLIOATIOKIILED HAB- 11. 1907.
A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BALDWIN i1. KANNENBERG, OF
OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
FRICTION-TOP can.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, BALDWIN H. KANNENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Oak Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction-Top Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in friction top cans. Its object is to provide a friction top can with a simple and efiicient device for holding circulars, advertisements, directions samples or other articles within the recess or cavity of the dish. shaped friction cover of the can. I
It consists in providing the pry-off rim of the friction cover with one or more inwardly turned holding lips.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a friction top can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section and Fig. 3 is a detail section of the cover.
In the drawing, A represents the body of the can, B its annular top, 0 its bottom head and D the friction cover.
The annular top B has the customary depression b and annular depending friction seat wall b surrounding the opening B in the annular top B.
The frictioncover D has the customary annular friction seat wall d tightly fittingand engaging the friction seat wall b of the annular top B and an outwardly projccting pry-off rim-d reinforced by a downwardly and inwardly turned fold or flange d". The cover D is provided with inwardly projecting integral holding lips (1 preferably four-in number for retaining circulars, sam- Witnesses segments being turned inwardly over the cavity of the cover and thus serving as holding lipsto retain circulars or other articles within the recess of the cover.
I claim:
1. In a friction top can having a depressed annular top and a friction cover furnished with an outwardly projecting integral segmental pry-01f rim, and provided with inwardly projecting integral holding lips for retaining circulars, advertisements, directions or other articles within the-cavity of the cover, substantially as specified.
2. A friction top can having a recessed cover provided with an integral outwardly projecting marginal segmental folded rim, and integral inwardly projecting and folded holding lips for retaining articles within the cavity of the cover, substantially as specified.
3; A can cover having an outwardly-projecting segme n tal rim furnished with integral inwardly turned holding lips for-retaining articles within the cover of the can, substantially as specified.
4. A recessed can cover having an outwardly projecting segmental rim and inwardly turned integral holding lips for retaining articles in the cavity of the cover, substantially as specified.
BALDWIN H. KANNENBERG.
