Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed June 8,1906. Serial No. 320,855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH GANOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sloan, in the county of Woodbury, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to a hinge for gates and other structures that it is desirable to open on hinges connecting one end or edge to a post or similar means.
It is the object of the invention to provide a hinge that will be at once strong, durable, ready of attachment and detachment, and that Will operate to keep a gate or other heavy structure up in place and aline ment, so. that it will not sag and become difficult to close and latch, and that will be otherwise efiicient and serviceable in the performance of all of the features of its office.
I will forthwith proceed to describe the construction and mode of operation of the invention, in connection with the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, pointing out with distinctness and particularity the part or features relied upon as constituting the invention.
Of the said drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a gate and post with the hinge in top plan. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a member of the hinge. I
Similar figures of reference designate similar parts turned on its projecting end. The eye 12 in the oppositeend will be nicely formed for the reception of the pintle or the other principal member 13 which is designed to be secured to the gate, door or similar structure.
The member 13, to embody my invention in satisfactory form, is made of a strong bar, one end 14 of which is bent at a right angle to the main body part to form a pintle that is designed to enter the eye 12 of the member 10. The body part of the member 13 may be either square or round, and the end opposite to that forming the pintle is bent at a right angle to the body part, and so as to extend horizontally when the pintle is positioned to extend vertically. The latter bend is designated 14 and is screw-threaded from its extreme end inward as far as may be desirable for the reception of a nut after the said screw-threaded end shall have been passed through a bar or other part of a gate or door. The body part 13 is preferably squared adjacent to the squared angular bend 14 to receive thehook part 15 of the member 16, the shank of which is screw-threaded and passed through the bar of the gate and has a nut 17 turned on its projecting end.
To remove the hinges, it is only necessary to turn off the nuts and then take out the stay parts and withdraw the principal members, all as is obvious.
What is claimed as the invention, is 1-- A hinge of the type set forth, comprising the combination with hinged parts; of an eye bolt secured to one of said parts, and having a jam nut engaged on its threaded end, said eye bolt constituting one member of the hinge, a member secured to the other part and having a straight shank and end portions bent at right angles to said shank and along axes at right angles to one another, one of said angular end portions being formed as a pivot for engagement with said eye bolt and the other of said angular end portions being projected through said last named hinged part and threaded to receive a jam nut, said shank having a portion of its surface reduced and flat sided, and a member secured in said last named hinged part and having its end bent upon itself as a hook to surround said re duced fiat sided portion and to sustain said shank against displacement on said threaded angular portion as a pivot, said last named member having a projecting threaded end carrying a jam nut.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
