No. 863,017. PATENTED AUG. 13 1907. w. 0. BROGKSIEB & M. P. TOGNAZZINI.
CHAIN PIPE WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED JULY 2a, 1900.
SW00: WGBme/k speb azZZJ/ZZ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. BROGKSIEB, OF GAYUOOS, AND MOSES P. TOGNAZZINI, OF GUADALOUPE CALIFORNIA.
CHAIN PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed July 23,1906- Serial No. 327,419.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM G. BROCKSIEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oayucos, county of San Luis Obispo, California, and MosEs P.TOGNAZ- ZINI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guadaloupe, in the county of Santa Barbara, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Chain Pipe- Vrenches; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in chain pipe wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character by means of which a pipe may be turned in either direction, and means whereby a firm grip may be taken on the pipe without danger of indenting or bending the same.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figu.re 1 is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing the wrench engaged with a pipe in position to turn the same in one direction; Fig. 3 is a similar View, partly in section, showing the parts in position to turn the pipe in the opposite direction; and Fig. 4 is a detail, perspective view of the chain engaging hook.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the wrench, which comprises a handle 2 and integrally formed segmental jaws 3, which project beyond the end and at each side of the handle, as shown. The end of the handle, between the jaws 3, is preferably beveled or tapered to a point, as shown. Arranged in the jaws 3 adjacent to one end or corner thereof is a transversely-disposed bolt 4, with which is connected a pipe engaging chain 5, said chain being provided along its length with a series of rivets 6, the ends of which project laterally beyond the sides of the chain to form short studs 7. In the jaws 3 at the opposite end or corner of the bolt 4 is arranged a transversely-disposed bolt 8, on which is pivotally mounted a double chain-engaging hook 9. The hook -9 is preferably bailshaped and in the parallel arms of the same is formed oppositely-disposed hook-shaped recesses 10, with which are adapted to be engaged the laterally-projecting studs 7 on'the rivets 6 after the chain has been passed around the pipe. The edges of the hook that will contact with the pipe or other object are curved, as at 10 in order that denting or marring of the object being operated upon will be obviated. In the jaws 3 adjacent to the pivot bolts 8 is arranged a chain-engaging bolt 12, with which the chain is engaged when in certain positions during the operation of turning the pipe.
When it is desired to turn a pipe or other cylindrical object to the right, the chain is engaged therewith, as shown in Fig. 2, and when it is desired to turn a pipe in the opposite direction or to the left, the chain and wrench are engaged therewith in the position shown in Fig. 3. When the chain has been thus engaged, the handle of the wrench is tiuned in the proper direction to tightly bind the chain around the pipe, thus firmly gripping the same without danger of the device being indented or crushed; after the chain has been thus engaged with the pipe, further pressure on the handle of the wrench in the desired direction will turn the pipe or other object with which the chain is engaged.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is z The herein-described chain pipe wrench comprising the handle, the segmental jaws at one end thereof projecting forwardly therefrom and also projecting laterally from op having obliquely-disposed channels in the opposing sides of its arms, the chain connected to the jaws at a point between the corncrs thereof opposite the corners between which the hook is connected, said chain having lateral projections for engagement with the channels of the bail, and a chain-engaging bolt connecting the jaws at a point near the bail.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
