To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK J. COURTENAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the. county ol Philadelphia and State ol Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Latch-Bolts, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to combined locking and latching devices, applicable to pivoted or hinged structures; its object is: to provide a cheap, durable and efiicent device for such purposes, comprised oi few and simple parts.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

In the drawings the character l, represents a plate adapted to be secured, by means of the screw 'holes 2, and 2, to a door, gate or similar structure, having upon its outer face a raised projection having an opening forming a loop 3, near its front edge and a projection 4, at the rear edge, both being adapted to act as stops in limiting the movement of the switch member 5, said member being pivotally connected by means of the post G, to the plate l, in such manner that it may operate between the loop 3, and projection 4; the member 5, is further provided with a handle 7 5 and a pin 8, said pin acting as a pivot for the bolt 9, to which it is connected near its extreme end and between the member G, and iront of the plate l. From the switch member 5, the lock bolt 9, passes outwardly through the loop 3, toward the edge of the door or gate to which it may be applied, and through the keeper l0, in turn secured to the door or gate by means of the screws 1l, and llf; a fixed member l2, is adapted to be secured to the jamb or stationary member constituting the frame of the door, or gate, by means of the screws I3, and 13/5 it is provided on the side next the bolt, with the projection 14, having the angular side walls or edges l5, and l5/, and the groove or slot 16, lying between them; a construction oi' the said groove or slotway passes entirely through the member l2, constituting the opening 17, or the reception oi the bolt at such times as it may be in its forward position by the action of the handle 7. At such times the bolt acts as a lock in preventing opening of the door or gate to which it may be attached; when, however, the handle 7, is positioned so that the switch member 5, shall be against the projection 4, the bolt 9, is withdrawn from the opening 17, and becomes in efiect a latch, the end then normally resting in the groove I6, and is at that time readily raised out of engagement with the side walls l5, and 15@ by means of the thumb lever 18, as is common with latches of ordinary character. When the switch V handle 7, is in its forward position, however, the raising lever 18, will be without effect upon the latch, the same being 'prevented from raising by reason of its end contacting with the solid material surrounding the opening 17.

Manifestly other minor modications may be made without departing from the general spirit o the invention.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

1. The combination with a latch bar, a keeper, a recessed catch member, a latch raising means and a latch supporting plate, of an auxiliary plate, pivotally attached to the said supporting plate, a handle therefor, a connecting means between the auxiliary plate and latch bar; adapted t0 move said latch bar laterally in and out of eugagement with the recess in said catch,

2. The combination with a pivotally supported latch bar, a keeper, a recessed catch and means of manually operating said latch bar from either side, of a supporting means for the said latch bar, a plate for attaching said supporting means and means for laterally positioning` said latch member with reference to the recess catch from one side only.
