To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, BERNARD U. Po'rrnn, a citizen of the United States of America, and a residentoi Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massacliusc'tts, have-inventedcertain new and useiul Improvements in Indicating and Registering Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an indicating or registering "device for showingthe extents of movements of a reciprocatorypart in foot lengths or other units of mensuration; and thedcvice in which this invention resides-has been primarily designed to show the aggregate linear extent of a succession of strokes of a piston or pistons of a steam pump.
As well known, the pistons of steam pumps in usual action have strokesof slightly varied lengths, and the quantity of'water delivered through the pump at each operation varies according to the lengths of the piston strokes.
' B yfbeing able to determine the aggregate of the lengths of all of thestrokos of a piston in a pump, or of the two'pistons, in a double acting punip,-fitted in a pun p cylinder or cylinders of given size-it is only a matterof. arithmetical computation to ascertain the cubic contents of the liquid pumped during the time in which such strokes are made. v
I The invention consists in the combination with a shaft and a drum loosely rotatable thereon, having a .tape or like flexible connection in winding engagement therearound, adapted to be connected with a piston .rod or other movable-part, and serving, by the movement of such rod in one direction, to impart a rotational movement in one direction to the drum, of a clutch operable between the drum and shaft to engage J the-shaft on the rotary motion of the drum in one direction and to release'such engagement on the reversed rotary movement of the drum, means for imparting a rev ersed rotary motion to the drum after each tapeimparted motionf hereof, and a shaft-rotationonch-r 1 connected with and operated bythe said shaft.
The invention furthermore consists in an extension or addition of means in the device above characterized for' enlarging the scope of its availability; and also consists in various combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

Referring to Fig.5 in which the steam pump shown is doublcacting,--liaving one piston rod A working between opposite cylinders ll ll,--C represents the indicating device mounted on a stand above one of the cylinders and near the-end thereof; and (i represents a thin flexible steel tape having a winding engagement about one of the drums comprised in the new device and having a connection with a lug 1) Carrie by stem d which is aiiixcd to, and moves horizontally backward and forward in unison with, and in the same extents as, the piston red A. 7
Now his to be understood that the present new de vice is to have the shaft thereof fully or partially rotated in one direction corresponding to the extent of movement to'the rightward of the piston rod ,A, said shalt in the new device being again fully or partially rotated in the same direction on the reverse stroke of the piston rod; and these rotations of the above mentioned shalt are indicated by and accumulatively registered'in the meter D with which the shaft is operativcly engaged or connected.
Having briefly indicated the mode oi application. of the device in relation to the pump, as well as the object thereof, the construction oi this pistou-stroko-indicating device will be now particularly described.
