' and more parti'cularly'to braiding machines desi ned for producing lace iabrica and which are generally known as lacs hraiding machines.
: these machines comprises series oi spindlesupon which which spindlas are by suitable mechanism caused to move in a generally circular path about a core or mandrel and to cross and re-cmss each others path, thus laying their threads about the core or mandrel, and in the case oi machines ier ma'lrin'g lace the movements oi the spindies are controlled by apattern mechanism whereby they cross and rc-cross the threads about the core or r 3 desired pattern lace..

Fig. 17 shows a a diagrammatical plan oi the operating gearing ior thoapindls and beater mechanism. Fig. 18 is a plan oi o'iragmentary portion oi the spindle mechanism. Figs. 19 and 90 show top plan views oi the spindles supporting andgniding plates and illustrating diagrammatically the movement oi the spindles.
Similar reierence characters ill be employed throughout the specification and drawings to des- The machine comprises a irame oi suitable sis'e and shape to support the operating parts, that shown embodying a top plate'l, mounted upon the legs or standards 2, the latter aiso supporting and being: braced by a second orunder' plate 3,'aud the two plates-being provided with the central openings 4 and ii-connectcd by the guide tulle 6, all as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Mounted upon the top plate 1 in a' circular lino concentric with the axis oi the guiding tube tiare the vertical posts 7 held to said plate 1 by the nuts 8 (see Figs. 5 and 6), and upon said posts aromountcd to'turn the sleeves ll carrying near their lower ends the gears 10, the adjacent gears meshing with. each *(llhly'lll as clearly shown in Fig. 17 whereby-theadjacentsleevcs will be driven in opposite directions: as will he clearly apparent irom -an inspection oi Fig. 17. Thorc arcin' the machine of thedrawing twenty-eight oi these geared sleevm which as shown iorm a complete geared ring, the adjacentanembers oi which willhe driven-in opposite direction with relation. to each other. senses rings 44 the entire group oi switches are shiited, and as the rings 44 are' moved simultaneously back and iorth in opposite directions, it'iollows that the entire group oi switches on one side oi the line oi driving disks 21 will be shllted in one direction while the group on the opposite side will be shiited in the opposite direction. The eccentric studs '42 may be turned' moro or less about the screws 43 to secure the proper adjustment oi the plates tltl with tlro operating rings 44, as' will be upderstooii. The rings 44 are. recipmcated (see Figs. 1, l7 and It!) by means oi links 45 pivotaily connected at 40 to said rings and at 47 toslides mounted adjustably upon disks 48, one oi the disks 48 (see Figs. 17 and. 18) being secured to a gear 49 driven through an intermediate gear 50 item one oi the gears 10; and the other at said tlisks 48 being mounted upon a gear at driven through an .intornredlsto gear 62 born one oitho gears 10. a 3
It will be noted by an inspection at Fig. 4 tlrat the switches 33 are interposed 'in each alternate space between the revolving driving disks 21 on each side oi the line'oi disks, so that a switch will be interposed between each, pair at such revolving driving disks 2t and pointing in a direction opposite to tho'dir'ecthm oi travel at the adjacent suriaces oi such driving disks. Thus it will bejnoted that the suriacesoi the disks 21 between which the points oi the outer line oi switches are interposed will be traveling in the direction at the arrows X shown in Fig. 4, and that the'surlaces oi the driving disks 2} adjacent to the points oi the inner litre oi switches will be traveling in the direction as indicared by the'artows'x Fig. 4, so that the points oi the switches will be interposed between and'polrtt in the direction op ire tothat in which the revolving disks 21 are carry it; the spindles, and as the points oi the switches are deflected either to the right or leit will be determined the direction oi travel oi the spindles, whether such spindles shall travel around a revolving disk to the right, or shall travel around a revolving disk to the leit all oi which will be clear-it is thought irons a'n inspectiorl'oi Fig.4 at the drawing.
- It will be understood to those iamilisr-withthis art that the spindles are not all oi them at all times in motion and that in producing the desired pattern oi lace some oi'the spindles are held at rest, while others are in movement and the points at which they are held at rest I at the points between adjacent switches, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 oi the drawing, where s indioates two oi the spindles at points oi rest and s' indicate; two oi the spindles in movement, the line oi mtwemont as italieatetl by the arrow .1 being such as to carry the ripper spindle s' as the parts are illustrated in Fig. 4, to the right and the lower spindle s' to tho lcit, it being understood that tho spindles move in pairs around the axes oi b6 the posts 7.
Fr the purpose oi holding the spindles stationary at (the point: oi rest, there are. provided suitable latches arranged to engage the lower part 22 oi the stcrn of the spindle. One oi theselatches'h'i is shown in side eleva' 80 tion in Fig. 8, and a portion oi the hose oi one oi the latches is shown in l ig. 3. and in Fig. 4, one of them is shown in top plnn'view and the'other indicated by dotted lines.
As shown at Fig. 8. the latches 53 consist oi suitable means at screws 55 passing-through apertured lugs iormed integrally with the standards 64. The lltch proper so is provided with a shank 67 recelvedina recess'in the standard 54 and pivoted therein by means at a pin 68 whereby the latch proper Moray havea swinging movement to a slight extent up and down whereby to permit the postage oi the stern ol the spindle over mid latch when his not intended that the spindle shall be held, and also let the purposeoi releasing the stem oi the spindle when it is desired .to again place said spindle in operation. r a
The latch 58 is' normally held upward by a light spring 59 received'in a bearing 60 iorrncd in the standard 64 and bearing against the under side'oi the latch 60. The upper-suriaceoi the latch to is provided with a curvodgnxwo at and a notch or mt ttflsee Fig. 4). and the iorward suriace is beveled as shown at 03. The arrangement is such that as the-spindles are moved by the driving disks they will .when they reach one at the latches engage the inclined surface (i3 by the end oi the stem 22' and depressing the latch proper 56 slightly,
which will by means oi its spring be again raised to engage the stern oi the spindleand hold said spindle at rest, and there it will rernain'at rcst'lrcltl by the latch ttntil it is disengaged therefrom and again started in motion. This disengagement oi the spindles train the latches is produced by the'wings which i have heretoiorc reierretl to as projectors 04. two oi srr'ch projectors being carried by each oi the latches 33. and as shown in Figs. 4. 5, ii and 7 these ptojeett'rrs ure pivoted by meansoi roundedheads 65 between tlie .plute littoral the block 37. they being held tirruly in place, but so or to have a iree up and down 'niotgnier r't' byincansoi a yoke 00 and the plate 39. which too-toastated is hold to the block 37 by the screw 40.
