AUGUSTUS FRANKLIN THMPSON, OF HNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
INVERTED GAS-BURNER.
No. semis.
Specification of Letters Patent.
` Patented July 301eo7.
Application filed May 14,1907. Serial No. 373,637.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, AUGUSTUS FRANKLIN THOMP soN, a citizen of the Unit-ed States of America, and a resident of Huntington, county of Cabell, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and-useful improvements in vinverted Gas-Burners, of which 'the following is a full and clear specification.
This vinvention relates more particularly to gas burners in which the mantle is suspended in a pendent or inverted position.
The object oi this invention is to provide a'burner el this character which is extremely simple in construction and neat in appearance and shall produce' a very powerful light, and is adapted to both artificial and natural gases,
'.he invention consists in the special arrangement, disposition and combination of parts hereinafter described, and vshown in the accompanying drawings, in Whicl'- A Figi re 1I is a vertical section taken centrally through the deduce; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the mar ile support.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The gas supply pipe is indicated at A and to this pipe is atta'fhed the valve plug B containing a needle valve (I adauted to control the ope ing D. :in adjustiney screw ll is tapped through the side of the valve plug:r and has a conical end to engage the rounded top ol the needle valve to depress the saine to regulate the flew of gus. The valve held in an open position by the spring;r l", and is pfevented from being displaced by a pin G when.- the adjusting screw is out of engagement therewith.
Suspended from the valve plug and attached thereto preferably by screw-threads is a mixing chamber El. formed of two sections h and hf thev sides of the two sections being curved and diverged, inwardly and away from each otlnr, the lower section li having a. tubular extension l provided with a contracted mouth.
- The upper se ltion h 1s provided with openings .l and has fitted thereon a sl`de or damper l( of corresponding shape which is also orovided with openings to regisn ter with the openings .i in the 'top section. The darm per is held to its seat by a shoulder upon the valve plug.
Secured to the'tubulzr extension l is the heating), tube li, ti attaching menus being an annular rib 'i on the extension and an annular groove l in the heating tithe, whereby the two pari s can be sprung into engage- .1nei 1t, the parts loeing made of thin metal for tir-` purpose. At the bottom or mouth end of the heatingy tube L is secured a combined mantle support and burner tip M, secured thereto by indentations, as shown in Fig. 1, or by screw-threads as shown plainly in Fig. 2. The burner tip is formed by contracting the mouth of the shade support, as clearly shown. Intermediate of its ends the heating tube L'is provided With an exterior annular rib l2 upon which rests the shade holder N, comprising a solid top n and a depending annular liange n provided with ventilating openings'n'i adapted to afford relief from eoi'igestion of heated prod\icts, -and supporting screws agito hold x the shade in position. l
ln operation the needle valve C and the mixing chamber valve or' damper K are adjusted to the quality and quantity of gas to be used, the flow of ,gas` draws into the mixing chamber a suitable quantity of air to form a suitable mixture, beingr retarded within the mixing chamber by the Contracted mouth of the eX tension of the chamber'to allow of proper mixrhg. The mixture is then forced into the heating tube, where the products are thoroughly heated and expanded forining a combustible product ready for ignition; the miie, ture lis then forced through the contracted end of the burner tip to the llame. By placing the mixing chainber above and in close proximity to the shade holder, the radiation from the top of the shade holder tends (tto heat the air before being,l drawn into the mixing chamher.
It will be observed that the heatingr tube is provided With a contracted inlet and outlet, thereby assuring a perfect combustible product, and preventing back: flare of the flame and also providing,r a lbright and steady light.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure hy Letters Patent is: i In an inverted burner, the combination o!" an adjustable ,zas inlet and a mixingr chamber depending; therefrom and provided with a depending," tubular extension havin:I a con traeted mouth, a depending heating,r tube tehseopiug; up over said depending; extension, means being,r provided for removably locking: the healim,y tube to the extension, :i mantle support :ind burner tip :it the lower end ol' the heating tube, und u u'lobe support supported on the heating tube.
in testimony whereof l hereunto zltiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses this (1th day ot Muy, 1007.
