zdiineeaesx- UNITED STATES FRITZ MULLER, OF DETMOLD, GERMANY.
DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed May 8,1907. Serial No. 372,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ MiiLLnn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Detmold, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to writing desks of the kind in which by the act of closing or opening the middle drawer both the doors and the remaining drawers of the desk will be locked or unlockedl Under the invention at the right and left hand sides of the middle drawer are mounted double-armed pivoted levers which actuate both the locking bolts for the side drawers and also those for the doors of the desk. Said levers having a double function I am enabled to simplify considerably the construction and operation of the parts.
In the accompanying drawing which illustrates the invention Figure 1 is a vertical section through the front part of a desk laterally of the middle drawer. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the front part of the middle drawer and one side drawer. Fig. 3 is a front view of a modified construction of lock for the doors. Fig. 4 shows the same in side elevation.
The closing of the drawers and of the doors is effected as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 by means of bolts 1, 2, which engage notches 3 of the side drawers 5 or bolt sockets 4 of the doors 19. The movement of the said bolts is effected by movement of the middle drawer 12 by means of levers 6 adapted to oscillate on pivots 7, which are mounted at the right and left of the middle drawer 12 in bearings 11' in the compartments 13 formed between the drawers 12 and 5. The bolts 1 are connected with the levers 6 by means of arms 8, while the movement of the bolts 2 is effected from said levers by means of rods 9 and slides 10 with which they are rigidly connected. The movement of the levers 6 is positively produced by movement of the middle drawer 12 by means of guiding grooves or rails 15 formed in the sides of the said drawers. In these rails or grooves engages a pin 16 secured to one arm of the lever 6. The guide rails or grooves 15 are so formed that in the position shown in Fig. 1' in which the drawer 12 is closed except to the extent of about one centimeter a short inclined part 18 extends from the horizontal part 17 of the guiding grooves or rails so that on movement of the drawer 12 into the closing position the pin 16 slides upwardly in the inclined groove 18, the rear arm of the lever 6 is raised and the front arm and therewith the bolts 1 and 2 are lowered.
On opening the drawer 12 the movement of the lever 6 takes place in the reverse direction, while as soon as the pin 16 slides into the horizontal part 17 of the groove the bolts 1 and 2 are brought to open position. The closure is thus effected on the positive movement of the levers 6 at the last stage of the closing movement.
In Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing is shown a modified construction of the door lock. On the angle piece 20 of the lock is arranged a slide 21 which is movable vertically by means of carriages 23 sliding over pins 22.
This slide 21 carries a pin 24 on which is pivotally suspended a segmental latch bolt 25. This latch bolt slides through an opening 26 in the flange of the angle piece 20. On the upward movement of the slide 21 in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 4) the bolt 25 passes through the opening 26 into an opening formed in the door that is to be locked and so effects a connection between the side frame of the desk and the door, so that the door is locked. The downward movement of the bolt 25 is limited by a swelling 27 formed thereon facing the opening 26. The connection of the slide 21 with the lever 6 by means of the rod 9 is effected by a pin 28 arranged on the slide.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
'1. In a desk or table, the combination with a drawer having an actuating groove or guide 15, a lever 6 having at one end a pin 16 engaging said groove or guide and hav ing a locking belt or pin at its other end, a drawer having a notch or recess to be engaged by said locking belt or pin, a door having a catch or socket 4, a bolt, as 2, to engage said catch or socket, and connectionsbetween said bolt 2 and said lever 6; whereby when said first-named drawer is closed or opened the other drawer and the said door will be locked or unlocked.
2. In a writing desk having doors adapted to be locked and unlocked by movement of the middle drawer said middle drawer having guiding devices 15 secured to the sides thereof, double levers arranged between the middle drawer and drawers on each side thereof, a bolt for a drawer on one end of each lever, a latch bolt for a door connected with the same end of the lever, said latch bolt being of segmental form, a vertically movable sliding piece to which said latch bolt is pivoted, said slide connected to said lever, and a pin on said lever acting on movement of the middle drawer to rock said lever to actuate the belts.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRITZ MULLER.
